Worse performance as in what? I can understand maybe running 85hz when it's not really designed for it might damage it over time, but 75hz @ 960x600 is MUCH nicer to play with (and doesn't give any whine) compared to the "recommended" 1680x1050 native res and 60hz.
Playing in 1680x1050 at 75Hz when 60Hz is the recommendation.
Many panels used to have a fixed refresh rate (I don't know what the standard is now), so using anything else meant getting a worse image quality, while the panel wasn't updating any faster. Instead it kept resynchronizing.
- CRTs aren't being manufactured anymore, so it's getting harder and harder to get tons of them for a tournament.
- CRTs aren't being marketed anymore, which makes it impossible for a monitor brand to provide them for a tournament for promotional purposes.
- CRTs are a loooot bigger than LCDs, which is logistically worse for a tournament organizer.
- Also, if you have a tournament with general public it looks way cooler to have LCDs than CRTs, which look like old hardware for most peopl.
Get used to it, you won't be seeing CRTs in tournaments for much longer.

You may buy a 19" instead of a 22 but I'd say its not a good choice as the price difference is often minimal.
You'll have to get used to the wide format, the slight ghosting of simple items and the overall blurry picture during fast mouse movements.
Do not forget to update your config : no vsync, use 75hz and com_maxfps 142/166/333 so you may join the whine towards the cnq3 dev team about that online 125fps cap :P
I don't think 19 is the most used in tournaments. I can only speak from my own experience, but monitor brands are pushing 22" as the size for gamers because there are extremely cheap 22" TN panels that are "decent" for gaming.
I wouldn't go for less than a 22". Also, I believe the standard size will become 24" in the near future, same as 19" was the standard for many years. It's a good size and its resolution is enough to output 1080p movies / games.
I wrote a thread a few days ago about my quest for a new monitor, maybe it'll help you.
Also, in adition to what Swing1oooK said, keep in mind you'll probably have to use your monitor's native resolution if you want anything other than a blurry mess with input lag.
24" is pushing into "too large" territory. There's a point where having a bigger screen is completely useless and you just move it farther away so you can still see it.
you clearly have never had a job that required you to multi-task on a computer. and even if you don't like them for gaming, you can always drop the viewsize.
What I really hate about LCD is that you have to play with those high ass resolutions. What if I want to play something that is not Q3? How im supossed to play Crysis at such resolutions? How I am going to play Q5 when it comes out at such resolutions?
I have a Samsung 226BW and it works perfectly fine. In the nvidia drivers settings you can sort out the aspect ratio so you don't have to play in widescreen. I don't experience any ghosting issues while playing.
why would you not want to play widescreen?
(i dont have a widescreen monitor, so i cant really judge, bu a friend of mine plays with withscreen + huge fov, it looks cool and its an advatage at the same time)
I have the 19" version of that monitor that is pictured here. When I change the flat panel scaling it puts bars on the top and bottom of the screen instead of the sides and its still very stretched. Is that normal?
use the monitor in the fashion they are build for, just set it at the automaticly set resolution like 1440x900 that its very nice and sharp and u wont feel much accel
well u can set it to 4:3 to get a normal screen, but its has 2 sides,
1# its easyer to ship these monitors for tournament organizers instead of big old crts, and its also what the sponsors want, they dont wanna show off their hardware on goo ol crt screens
