I'm currently using a bastardized version of a Wingman + WMO sensor. I cut the bottom out of both mice and swapped them. Used JB weld to secure it.
Works amazing. Now I can work on the form instead of the function. The next step is using my spare Deathadder's sensor and utilizing this newly formed bottom piece.
Yeah, I just wanted to reduce some weight (I did other stuff too), it also felt better too, you could grip it better AND you could feel the skeleton flex slightly when you did so.
I got too perfectionist with my first try, I soldered and unsoldered too many times and the buttons died. Frustrated I threw it all away. Luckily my brother is the ubernerd and knows very well how to solder.
There is a good possibility I will release the data for it. I don't see a real profit from making mods of a 20 year old mouse. Maybe if it were in enough demand, maybe a bunch of other godlike shapes are being forgotten by optical sensored mice, I don't know.
That's awfully similar to what happened to me. At soldering the last 3 points, the heat got too high and I ruined the PCB because the metal layer came off. So I threw it away, only to realize 3 weeks later there is conducting glue to fix this. You can even make it yourself with graphite....damn.
Anyways, I would guess at least 10 people on ESR would buy a decent Wingman Gaming Mouse (WGM) mod :) The shape is just amazing for some, me included, and was never done afterwards (I do not count the fatality mice, as they skipped worse then the basic WMO sensor did).
I guess if 10 or more people really wanted one I could charge a little fee (I probably have to get my friend who works where the 3d printer is on board). Maybe it'd make it worth my time, especially for those who don't have the knowledge to do it. Or they're just lazy and would rather pay. Haha
The other option is to make the file for it available, and charge to print it and ship it if they can't print it themselves. Then make a How-To. Would have to come to an agreement on 1 sensor though or multiple bottom piece moldings would have to be made which makes it more complicated.
I feel like the Deathadder sensor would be just fine, but maybe everyone disagrees. Or a cheaper variant could be found.
A 3G Razer sensor would be really nice - especially the Salmosa-variant, where you can set polling rate and resolution with little hardware switches.
Avago ADNS-S3668.
Can't see why center wouldn't work. I assume the difficult part would actually be making sure the sensor is not at some odd angle, as in, not oriented straight ahead, and with the wingman shell it looks to me like a tougher task than it might appear.
I have read through that and would like to implement this idea/research if I can. It's a matter of finding the exact spot to put the sensor, and if there is enough room to execute it. Will take some time for me to figure that out because it's a lot of writing and I'm stupid.
This was a cumbersome and stupid way to post the pictures, but I'm being a degenerate today and don't have the faculties/care to figure a better solution out. lol
Somewhat? I'm using the top part of the shell as there's no need to recreate it, and the guts from inside in order to get the correct button positions. Just making the bottom piece to more accurately place the sensor in a decent spot.
As someone above mentioned I wonder about the legality of this. I think to some extent this is borderline copyright infringement as you are using someone's design without recognition and permission, on the other hand if you own the mouse and do this just as a mod then it seems to be alright.
I guess as long as you don't make profit and mod them instead of building them from scratch you should be fine. Not that anyone would ever care, but I am just wondering about the principles.
It's a long read but some interesting ideas about sensor placement:
I have no intention of ever making money off of this. When I'm done I'll be releasing the file onto the internets. However, I think I will ask Logitech first about doing this. haha
Dude, I would buy one of these from you. I'd pay alot because I cant play quake without this design. Also, if anyone has an old logitech wingman gaming mouse lying around collecting dust, please PM me with your asking price. I'm a motivated buyer.
