The days of his glory are long gone, he had brilliant ideas but Daikatana proved that he completely lost his head. Might be because of him lacking a creative direction, or work schedule, whatever. He's lost completely.
Now he's trying to sell a product under his name, thinking that players will buy it under the guise of "I am the legend of FPS" crap. American mcGee tried the same shit and failed, luckily for us. Now we have another washed-up persona attempting to cach in on a long-lost glory.
I respect Romero for his past achievements, but his career after obliteration of Ion Storm largely supports the thesis presented by his adversaries and many industry experts; Romero was a flash of genius - a flash, mind you. He's burnt out and flat out of ideas.
The world is different than in early 90s when startup companies, almost garage-based like id Software were able to create masterpieces from nothing and market them succesfully. Nowadays we have an industry that's so huge and has so many 900lb gorillas present that Romero and his squawking about "making a shooter" sound distinctively 90s-like.
I wish him well, but I dont believe he will deliver anything of high note. Maybe a mediocre shooter that will give his fledgling budget a much-needed bost, but that's about it IMHO.
Seriously, I don't care about any of those new or old FPS until developers tell me what they will do to make a difference and to create something sustainable with a true game identity.
So frustrated about empty words, vague design ideas and being left in the dark.
