Exactly what gtx960 are you using? Some of them don't have analog pins on the dvi port. The adapter might be converting the signal and doing a shit job. It appears that is the case with the thread you linked.

This card. It does have DVI-I output, which should give analog signal. And the adapter is passive I believe. Looks like this.

you need a dvi to vga cable with compressors at each end of the cable a inch or 2 from the plugs

The thing is, I already use good thick vga cable with ferrite beads, and as I said, old v/cards work OK with the same cable and adapter, so i assume that either they skimmed on analog circuit/RAMDAC on the gtx960 or it's some kind of weird impedance mismatch. This problem is not uncommon on current v/cards anyway:

the frequency is too high from digital to analog, if you analog to digital with any other adaptor, then it will probably just affect the brightness of the color`s more then anything else that gets on your nerves

used CRT with GTX780 and dvi->vga, everything was fine. Cable and adapter were dirt cheap.

The cable has 2 frequency shieldings in it, so it should be much better, keep it short too ...

960 and CRT works fine for me, using the adapter that came with the gpu dvi->vga
ClearType-Text did u try setting that in windows?

Have you tried making a custom resolution and playing with the timings? try GTF timing, it might be forcing LCD timings automatically.
