And for good reasons. Its funny to play and extremely cheap. I think everyone has improvised a game with just some sticks to mark the score area and an empty soda can or bottle as the ball. Some of the funniest memories were had that way.

You can play it everywhere, on every surface. The beach, a grass field, concrete, asphalt. It's a team game, and those will always be more popular due to their social nature and the fact you can be carried by your mates if you aren't good enough/tired that day.

Also, and that's important, it's not a debilitating sport. MMA could never be the most popular sport if every time you played it you got a black eye or to drain a ear.

You can play it as much as you want, as long as your opponents aren't jackasses doing hard tackles.

Also, your size doesn't count that much. Small childs can play it as good or better than childs that have already grown half a foot taller.

At an amateur level, you don't een strictly need good cardio. You can compensate with good skills and cooperating well.

All of those reasons is why everyone in the world plays it, from the favelas of bra71l to the slums in Asia, country people, city people, northern people, southerns, everyone plays soccer.

That's also the reason why it's the sport where there is the highest level of mastery. It's accessible to everyone.

For all we know there might be on earth people who could be 10x better than Hamilton or Vettel at driving a F1, or even people who could be better than Federer and Nadal at tennis. We will never be sure because those sports are not easily accessible.

at this point in time it's certainly not adequate to explain it only with "simple/accessible and fun" stuff, as we probably all grew up in a society giving huuuuuuuge credit (extraordinary attention (psychologically suggesting importance and stuff), money, respect and cheer) to that sport and its players. believing this has no impact is for fools. those factors might have been of big(er) relevance in the historical development of its status though. anyway, you forgot another big reason for it's success: it's quite socializing! not just cause u play with many people and even team up with some... but even for the viewers. it is so established today that it actually has a lot of convesation value.

on the other hand it is quite dull to watch, at least for me. the scenes worth watching are usually like 3-5min in total... from a 95min +15min break game. of course one might fever a bit with ones favorites, but the stuff rlly ain t very spectacular alltogether. at least I don't quite see it. I don't think the attention it gets can be explained with its epicness. it got a social thing to watch the stuff together, provides shared experiences/knowledge and hence conversation topics etc. (besides many ppl being experienced at it., kids dreaming of becoming admired persons like the players they see on tv and then building a special relationship with the sport etc.)

Mastery doesn t just come from talent and hours put in, it's also about the EFFECTIVENESS of pracctice/hours put in. I would argue that f.e. in tennis is mastered to a much higher degree. and musical instrumentalism as well.
for multiple reasons: 1) the exact things one should do in matches are much more "specific" and hence praccticable in a more efficient way. the more predictable/the less moves/narrower the range of moves, the better they can be prepared. 2) the more intense the pracctice and match time, the more you will learn. if half match time/pracctice time involves you more or less actively waiting rather than actually performing the critical stuff to be developed, you won't learn that much from it. while in many 1v1 sports like tennis people are constantly performing and hence able to work on themselfes, in football the active "waiting" is a lot bigger. a tennis player a) constantly gets feedback on his performance and skills (and is hence able to work on it) + b) task-experience (further automization etc.). 3) it could be that in soccer the overal match situations differ more, causing the brain bigger problems in utilizing situation specific networks (or adapting them).
