Laser = light source for optical sensor.
So we've got optical mice with laser, and optical mice with LED (light emitting diode).

even though that's true, most people still call them 'optical' and 'laser'. It doesn't make a lot of sense, but thats just how it is :)

mx300 should be listed on its own, it isnt the same shape as the mx500/510/518/g5.

mx300 and g1 have the same shape, g1 has a glossy finish though

Also stop calling sensors as optical and laser, all are optical, laser is only lightsource instead of LED. So its LED or laser.

btw. Richard Owens wrote that Dual use 1500Hz refresh rate, but in past Logitech said it use 2000Hz which is value that completly eliminates delays known from older opticals.

What im trying to say is "Is this a good mouse to bring to cpl?" and then "no, because this mouse has been rendered obsolete by the MX518 and you should probably use that instead since it is better" then in the MX518 im saying "Yes, this mouse is good for CPL because the DPI can be changed in the hardware of the mouse and does not require any software to accompany it, so you can use the high DPI settings without having to install mouse drivers, which CPL does not allow".

Why is mx310 not "CPL worthy"?

Im just saying if you dont already own a mouse, buying an mx310 is probably not your best choice if you are planning on going to cpl because there are better options. If you're already used to it, then go right ahead and bring it to the cpl, but if that's the case then why are you reading this thread? :P

I think you're overlooking the importance of mouse shape in lieu of the so called latest and greatest tech...

Unlike the mx500 which has many successors with the relatively same shape and feel, the 310 is a unique shape and therefore still might be a better choice for some people. Whether or not you plan on going to the CPL is also irrelevant.

Why call it "Good CPL mouse"? "Good for lan tourneys" is the right term unless you're on Angel's payroll. After all very few will ever play in a CPL tournament.

To me it's puzzeling that you belive MX300 and mx310 is not suited for lan tournaments (or cpl only as you prefer). The reason you call the MS wheel mouse and intellimouse optical good for CPL applies to MX300 and mx310 as well. Never needed any software for them to function like most people want them to (excluding those who want insane binds like "bind wheel 'ctrl+alt+delete'" in drivers).

Still wondering where did the dpi buttons on the mx500, mx510 and MX1000 come from? Used all the mice (even owned mx500 and mx510), but I can't recall any dpi switching buttons on them. AFAIK that feature was introduced with MX518 as a response to the diamondback.

Saying a mouse is not suited for high level tournaments just because it doesn't have the latest tech is IMO wrong. If the mouse doesn't skip or have any other major problems (like unstable hz), then it's fine for high level tournaments. Only time you can refer to another mouse is in the cases like MX500, mx510 and mx518 as the shape and button placement is identical (same aplies to mx300 and G1).

I'm looking at it from the standpoint of someone who is looking for a new mouse. So if you already own that mouse and you like it, good for you, but what I'm saying is that if you have the option there are better mice to go for, so the MX300 is not the first one you should spring for, and is therefore not the best mouse purchase you could make and is therefore not the best mouse you could have for something like the CPL.

You make a good point though, I'll think about re-organzing that part of it.

When it comes to mice, I'm a firm beliver in "shape is king". G1 and mx300 share the same shell, so there the G1 is the obvious choice. MX310 however is a unique shape which means there is no true alternative if you want that shape.

Personally I use a G5 and am very happy with that.

I think you have to be a little objective or else this would be quite an overwhelming list. taking into account all factors(new technology in the same model/grip, etc) i'd say it looks pretty fair

Aprox theoretical max speeds should be:
*mouseman dual optical = 0.6m/s
*mx510, mx1000 = 3m/s
*mx310, mx500, mx300= 2.5m/s (limited to 1m/s with 125hz on usb port)
*MX518, Diamondback = aprox 1.5m/s
*MS intellimouse, MS Wheelmouse = 6.2m/s (if the numbers in that article is correct. Afaik intellmouse 1.1 used to have 6000fps and a 16x16 sensor which would max at 3m/s).
*G5, G7, Copperhead = 1.33m/s

Theoretical max pollingrates:
*mx500, mx300, mx310, mx510 = 500hz
*mx518, diamondback = 1000hz (not entirely sure about the mx518, but belive it can do 1000hz).
*Not sure about the MS mice, but belive they can do 500HZ

I disagree that the G5 is currently the best in the Logitech series, the mx518 is better.

Ok, so it was a month ago when someone last posted on this thread but it has still provided me with the information I was looking for on mouses. Ok...so i have decided to get either a mx518 or a G5 as I prefer the shape compared to other mouses, however some have brought up the point that the g5's durability is questionable, can anyone else back this up? + is there any new mouses which are said to be succeeding? thanks !

uhm I have a g5 for some months now.. and it works pefect! The only problem I have are the drivers they fuk things up in q4.. sometimes.. So i reinstalled them again.. because before that i never played with drivers and it worked flawless.. I recommend the g5.. ":)
