how old are the guys working at id software?
i have a feeling that the next 5-20 years of id games are going to be pretty bad then the big wigs will have made so much money off of engine licensing alone that everyone except for old man john himself goes into early retirement and the company gets handed over to the only people who really care about it anymore - competitive gamers, and people who like competitive gaming
then they'll start being awesome again :)

TBH I think id have been that way for a few years now. And them developing the next game for xbox 360 is probably the biggest sign.
Carmack did the best job of leading the whole rendering bubble to where it is now. I.E. all the pixel shaders, bump maps, realtime shadows etc.
The whole rendering bubble is almost at its noticeable peak, so it does not surprise me he's moving onto bigger things and wants to earn himself a few 100 million to fund wahtever crazy scheme you know he's going to pursue, and probably succeed or blow himself up at:)
