wow that's even shittier upload than we get on ADSL here in Norway.. 4000/400 atm.

idd upload is very important for gaming.

i know that people say that quake eg. only needs 7-10 kb in upload, so in theory 128upload should be sufficient, yet the ping always improves when you upgrade your upload speed. At least i havent seen a case where it stayed the same.

ATM I have 1mbit DL which is roughly the following speeds....

Downstream 964.8 Kbps ( = 0.9 kbps )
Upstream 87.7 Kbps ( = 0.1 kbps )

This is not enough for q4 because it lags constantly. Where as it did not when I had the 10mbit service which had 500kbps upload.
So upload seems to be the biggest factor cuz Dl's are pretty good.

I remember having better ping with an ISDN connection, than with ADSL (until FAstpath was available). Ping, latency has little to do with connection speeds. It has more to do with how the ISPs are connected to Internet backbone, and how the connections are routed.

stunt, download/upload speed has nothing to do with ping!
it is all routing and that doesnt change with an isp's different cable service speeds (unless maybe it is a a "gamer" isp like speakeasy, but then they would say it about ping anyway)

From my experience more upload decreases ping. Dl no. Upload yes.

because as long as your packets go through 15 different places all located far between eachother the ping will remain high no matter what

Not true,i recently upgraded from 1meg dl 256 ul to 5meg dl and 448 ul,my pings were great before but now they are unbelievably low.Same routing to same servers i play on and they dropped.
I play osp q3 mainly and damage given rose 25% overnight after this upgrade.Damage received dropped a hell of alot as well.I find i don't get hit so much now.I haven't changed the way i play or anything just plug along as always hehe.
Playing Q3 you actually upload more than you download.

well yeah... but those numbers are pretty damn low as well afaik
like.. lets say it is like 20kb upload/sec
if you had an upload rate that supported that and more, how would upgrading to an ever higher level improve things? q3 will still be uploading stuff at 20kb afterall

Depends on a lot of factors like, geography, routing, and spec of the server and ofc the game and netcode.
So not everyone will benefit all of the time cuz it's one of those things which can change.

It's not an infinte thing. I.E. if you have 2 connections from the same ISP at the same house, one at 10000/10000 and the other at 5000/5000 you prolly won't notice anything between the two because both of them are already exceeding the upload/download limits of the game server and the caps of the networks.

However, in my case (UK), I went down from NTL...

Downstream 10000 Kbps
Upstream 512 Kbps

to

Downstream 964.8 Kbps
Upstream 87.7 Kbps

Quite simply the speed on my setup is below what the servers can handle, so when I had a higher upload/download the minimum was constaly being met, whereas it was not before.
As you just said, once you get past a certain speed then fine, you prolly won't notice, but if you're barely meeting the minimum requirements or below it then tyou'll notice a boost in the overall trip.

IMO, anything from 2-10 ping, assuming ofc your initial conenction is not piss poor like Modem.

Little trick - open/close a different tag midway within the [hide] tag.

For example:

[[b][/b]hide=test tag]
my test lolllol
[[b][/b]/hide]

Becomes:

[hide=test tag]
my test lollol
[/hide]

Absolutely fucking correct :D I used to run 256/64 and I pinged 31-35 on a good on CZ servers that I now ping 13-15 on.
They upgraded the PHYSICAL network here, i.e. they got rid of old steel cables and replaced it with fiber optics and the bandwidth of the phone + adsl network increased a lot. So after the upgrade, even with 256/64, my pings dropped like a motherfucker and I was able to run 125 maxpackets :)

eh if they replaced it with fiber optic cables then that is something dfferent, that stuff does make everything faster

yeah it increased the overall bandwidth of the network so i could run 125 maxpackets but of course it also carries data faster so yeah :)

well, more or less ;) but i have to pay my connection on my own, cuz my parents aren't using it... and without a job i can't afford to pay a better connection :D btw the biggest connection is something like 6k down atm (don't know how much up it has).

well im talking my download speed has been cut by more than half. like i was downloading from pq3 @ 650 kb/s, now with new connect 130 kb/s ....

I dunno Im not an expert on this stuff. It just confuses me. Id thought it would be faster.....


Widen the street doesnt make cars faster, but upgrading the speed limit does. :)
