Agree about the slow startup though, and I think its unacceptable that Firefox can gobble up 100megs of RAM sometimes.

the only extensions i use are adblock, mouse gestures, customgoogle.

if you're gonna stick with firefox, forecastfox (weather) is very nice to have. 'gmail manager' is THE gmail extension to have (checks multiple gmail accounts).

i used opera before FF came along and stole all operas ideas for free :D by the time opera became free i switched back but didnt like the new versions :(

props to opera tho it had tabbed browersing and has built in mouse gestures, things FF just stole

To check the weather I use the extension "Open the fucking window".

I use forecast fox to check weather out for upcoming days, so I know whats gonna happen if I decide to go mountainbiking during the weekend or smtg.
PPl who use forecastfox to check current weather only are pretty dumb

personally i prefer opera because it takes up less memory, unlike firefox which takes up a huge amount of memory,especially considering it's an email client too. although i miss adblock, opera 9 will contain a blocking utility.

there are some blocking options, i never had any shitty popup on opera...

adblock is an firefox extension which allows you to block images and shockwaves, inpaticular ads, like the nexus one at the top of esreality.

i switched to the opera9 beta a few weeks ago from firefox. i'm converted, no turning back. opera leaves a much smaller memory footprint, everything is faster, and as far as the gui, it's far more customizable, especially if you're going minimalist/fastest possible.

If that is right, then please tell me how to actually move the normal menu panel. In my FF I have the File, edit and such menus to the right, and beside that menu I have the URL line. One bar is all I want and as far as I know Opera couldn't give me that..

the button on the far upper left is bookmarks, the one with two opposite arrows adjusts wide pages to screen width. the refresh button doubles as a stop button. menu and un-close tabs thing all the way on the right. the "wand" thing next to address bar auto fills in forms for me when i click it (quite useful @ the free stuff forums).

this browser is clean.

it's not removed (though i could if i wanted to). if i click the green arrow next to the word "menu" on the far upper right, my menu drops down.

to do this, or anything else with opera's toolbars, simply right click on the toolbar and click customize!

if you want to move objects around on the toolbar, click buttons! then just drag and drop.

Well, even though I right click a menu and get to the customize window, I cant really seem to move my URL bar to the same level as the normal menu.

I might just miss something, but I cannot drag the bars around.

I guess the problem is more me than the browser, but I can't get it to look anything like the attached image. Oh, and sorry it is in danish.

And I forgot to mention that I did not find a good way to setup Opera to use quick searches like firefox does. At the atttachment I am about to perform my favorite search on google, setup with the keyword 'gg'. That kind of searches are setup for wikipedia, guitar tabs, dictionary.com and so on, and is easily customizeable. But still - it is more likely to be me that cannot use opera to its fullest.

I've just tried Opera for the first time in a long while and it's really sexy now. I remember they had adverts and shit and that you had to pay to get rid of them a while ago.

I noticed a few Firefox threads here have people complaining about how much memory Firefox takes up. This is a known memory leak, and the Mozilla guys haven't gotten around to fixing it for whatever reason. But there's no reason your Firefox should take up 70,000K in memory, so here's how to fix that memory leak and keep Firefox from bloating up.

1. Open a new tab. Type "about:config" without quotes into the address bar and hit enter/click Go.

2. Right-click anywhere, select New, then Integer. In the dialog prompt that appears, type:

browser.cache.memory.capacity

3. Click OK. Another dialog prompt will appear. This is where you decide how much memory to allocate to Firefox. This depends on how much RAM your computer has, but generally you don't want to allocate too little (under 8MB), but if you allocate too much, you might as well not do this. A good recommended setting is 16MB. If you want 16MB, enter this value into the dialog prompt:

16384

(Why 16384 instead of 16000? Because computers use base-12 counting. Thus 16 megabytes = 16384 bytes. Likewise, if you want to double that and allocate 32MB, you'd enter 32768.)

4. Click OK to close the dialog box, then close all instances of Firefox and restart. If your Firefox still uses the same amount of memory, give it a few minutes and it should slowly clear up. If that fails, try a system reboot.

I'm not even sure if this fix still works. I did it a while ago, the task manager says FF is using 30mb of ram, but I havn't noticed it going about 100mb+ yet. *shrug*

Switched to Opera from FF long ago...

Right this very second FF is using 24mb's of ram, but then again, I dont have all those extensions you're talking about.

I prefer Opera, and have used it a lot, but I find that it does a bad job displaying quite a few of the sites I visit regularly, and the ad-blocking function is pretty primitive compared to Adblock for Firefox. For now I'm using Firefox, albeit grudgingly.

From what I've heard, the latest version of Operas adblocking is pretty powerful. Just click on it and choose to not view it anymore. No idea from which version of Opera this is though. Which are you using?

Opera, I used firefox on the my school computers and essentially it can do the same thing opera does but you have to go and find each and every extenstion individually to make it so.

there are so many bad things about firefox that i just can't describe, it just feels...bloated and reminds me of fat people eating banana muffins. i can list off things that opera does better than firefox until the cows come home though, especially the way it handles downloads, and its caching is just unbelievable, last time i pressed the back button in firefox i remember waiting out the same lag that IE has. the inbuilt source viewer is actually quite nice too, and the little recycle bin for closed items, i assume firefox has all this anyway, but opera had it first and for that they have my loyalty for now.

The last I remember the Mozilla browser with the gecko engine was faster than Opera according to some benchmark, but that was a while ago. Firefox is yet to implement gecko, afaik.

Personally, I think this whole browser war thing is getting abit oversensitive. I'm happy with how either browser runs and don't mind working with either - as long as its not Internet Exploder. Since I've already got FF to how I like it, interface included, there's not much incentive for me to shift back over to opera, after all, they're almost freakin identical in the long run. I did use opera for some time though, but abandoned it after it was a real bitch when it came to opening .pdf's...

load times. it's not really the space that's an issue, it's how long you have to wait to use the program after running it :)

I have my cache set to 50mb in opera, so startup isn't instant, I usually have at least 5 pages left open from my last session.

What do you mean who cares about a few megs? Not everyone is as rich as you, and I only have 256mb. Opera is just more tightly coded, has IRC+Mail+RSS+Atom, full WML support, XML+Voice, includes Flash Player, and is SMALLER than Firefox.
You can't just say "Oh, everyone has enough RAM, no need to optimise anymore". This kind of attitude is what causes software writers to write like crap. Now, Firefox is far from crap, but it is far from perfect either. And crashing twice(bringing down my whole computer with it) is definitely not perfect.

Not to mention quick-downloading, MDI, Ctrl-Z to recover closed pages, download manager capable of restoring downloads even after the browser closes and other nice features. And extensions are clunky. I can understand weatherforcast or SSR rendering as extensions, but for simple things like "open new tab next to active" I have to download an extension? Just to have an "X" on each tab I need an extension?

Firefox is good, but it is too slow and bloated (XUL user-interface lags the GUI, and take up more memory) for me. Wait till Fx version 3 maybe. :)

Well lads, if you can buy a brand new $15000 computer to get Quake 4 to run smooth, then why wouldn't a browser such as Firefox be worthy such an investment too? It doesn't even have a 60Hz limit and will go very easy on your eyes!

I loved FF when it came. Now it's more like the biggest browser but not quite compatible with IE, so it doesn't do anything I want. Been using Opera since it came, and the early versions were quite buggy/incompatible. It still isn't 100% IE compatible, but it's the most efficient option for me. When I do need to buy and pay something online or play a web game (the things Opera might have problems with) I open IE.

And about the pop-up blockers; I surf a lot and never had windows popping up. Ok maybe 5 in 3 months of surfing. They just get minimized as little tabs to the right of the URL and you can click them to open them.

I'm using 8.54 with a new skin and all the plug-ins I need. I can watch avis and quicktimes perfectly unlike in IE.

i like the "Block unwanted popups" (F12) where only those are visible that you open yourself (by clicking on a link), no automatic popups.
