There are two words that, imo, prevent Halo 2 from ever becoming a decent tourney game: Splitscreen Multiplayer

Zim: At MLG they've become so overloaded with signups that they have two divisions now - pro and amateur. I don't know exactly what you need to do get into the pro division, I think you need to either win games at the tournament and/or be invited. The difference between the two divisions is the amateur 4v4 and FFA tournament you have to play on half screen purely due to a shortage of xboxes for most of the tournament. In the FFA game, they keep rotating you across boxes. The amateur division also plays less objective games and is best out of 3 instead of 5.

After that (and for the entire pro tournament) it is your choice. There are advantages and disadvantages on playing split screen. In Halo 1 they had no choice but to play on split screen for 4v4 cause you could only hook four boxes together. In 4v4 it was actually a huge advantage to do put all four players on one xbox anyway and it made for a fucking awesome TDM game, as you are completely aware of where your entire team is. Halo 2 4 player split has serious framerate issues and visibility issues that Halo 1 did not have at all. :|

I think one thing Quake is seriously missing is inset windows for your teammates like they've got in MVD - then you wouldn't need to spam team binds anymore, and honestly, I don't think team binds are skillful, they're just nerd shit that keeps most people out of the game. Internet probably couldn't handle it, nor could the shitty q4 engine, but I bet it could be whipped up on LAN in q3 without lagging or causing framerate problems because usually the boxes they play on are absurdly powerful, no?

Oh, and in case you don't get the idea, you NEVER, EVER are allowed to share a TV with an opponent. The game can support up to 16 players, dumbasses, do you think they jam 16 little boxes on one tv?

That's why you don't use 40cm/360 mouse sens. With my setup I could pull off most of that strafing while having better aim thus negating the need to be able to strafe for 3 days straight.

The analog stick does not simulate that many directions. I'd guess it's more along the lines of 40 or so. I'm looking for numbers but cant find any on the internet :(

okay, so it sends a signed 16 bit integer for both the x and y axies. So however many extrema there are on a 16x16 grid is the number of directions. Just counting the edges (which it probably does, as the grid is probably rounded and more circular) that gives 15x4 = 60 possible directions. That is a lot more than 8 though, I'll give you that. :)

At least the name they gave for the glitch is a little more creative than the "superboucing" glitch which is similar to this except it sends you flying 100 feet straight up in the air instead. Superbouncing isn't allowed in tournament because if you can superbounce a sniper rifle to the top of a map it's an instant win, but I imagine they will allow this new trick as long as you don't break the "no getting outside of the normal boundaries of a map" rule with it. There are ways to glitch through clip brushes and get on top of the "ceiling" of the level :|

Seeing as I can't post anything remotely related to consoles without someone posting "lol controller lol" don't mind me if I countertroll for a bit.

Halo 1 has better maps than even the best of custom Quake maps. Halo 2 has a lower percentage of excellent maps but most of them aren't broken due to the layout, they're broken due to poor item placement and a retarded weapon respawn system. Quake 4 did not ship with a single decent map - even the remake of The Edge was awful.

Speaking of the item spawn system, the item respawn system is stupid in H2, I will admit - certain weapons on the map are flagged to not come back until they run out of ammo, but in H1, it's something completely different. Weapons respawn 1:00 into the game, 2:00, 3:00, so forth, regardless of when it's picked up. Some stuff respawns 2:00, 4:00, or 0:30, 1:00, you get the idea. Personally, I think it's better. At certain points in the game everything is going to respawn at once and a team has to make some tactical decisions about what to go for and what not to go for, instead of mindlessly picking up every single weapon they run across. It's also much simpler for newbies and spectators to understand and it makes playing any gametype without weaponstay/a a fast respawn time a lot more fair.

I also like how item spawns are also affected by knockback, so instead of trick jumps, you have trick nade throws. Imagine if there was a way to blow the rail on q3dm6 off of the alcove from under bridge and send it flying to on top of bridge for your teammate to grab, oh, but if you fuck it up, you're going to send it flying down to shards or something for the enemy to grab. They removed this from Halo 2 because they considered it a glitch and everyone complained. If they don't put it back, they're morons, but well, that's well known, so they aren't going to. Oh well.

Halo 1 is an awful lot like Quakeworld. The developers completely pulled it out of their ass at the last minute and made no attempt to balance it or decently bug test it, and yet it somehow turned out to be awesome. If only H1 had actual online play instead of XBC, people would have gotten bored of H2 by now provided they didn't suck at it.

H2 would have a lot more depth if it wasn't for the unnecessary amount of autoaim, and well, even the most mundane of gamers are getting annoyed by it. Virtually every single 360 game has a retarded amount of AA right now and it's part of the reason that none of them are worth playing.

In other words, if you think it's impossible for a console game to take skill, you're wrong. It just doesn't take wrist coordination. So there. Nintendo is going to end up pushing the entire industry to motion sensors anyway.

I dont think anyone is saying that console games do not take skill. I think what people are saying is that it just takes LESS skill and also involves several frustrating and unnecessary limitations, most of which derive from the controller.

the other thing i imagine is a lot of the people that are saying "wow it sure is hard to aim to with a controller this is gay where's my mouse" played halo 1 with their real life buddies for 20 minutes and failed to realize that absolutely nothing in the game is hitscan. you need to lead the target with the pistol

i think part of the reason there's so much damn autoaim in h2 is because even the developers of halo failed to understand this. h2 sucks, after i started messing with my modded box i realized how badly they fucked the game up and gave up defending it. it's mindless fun but it's utterly skillless

it's not exactly difficult to aim with a controller, it's just restrictive compared to mouse control. after being an xbl subscriber since 02 i've played my fair share of halo* multi.
yeah it's fun(which is what gaming is all about, or should be), for a console game but it just can't touch the depth of certain well-known pc fps titles not just because of the restrictive controls.

i wont deny it's a great alternative to pc gaming though - it just lacks that special 'connected' feel the mouse offers.

try playing halo 1 with an egg timer, it's where the tdm really begins to shine. without one it is just like "eh". the weapons are so comically overpowered you just need to know when they're spawning real bad
