It is no secret that I do not care much about the ongoing football World Cup. Although it is hosted in my home country, practically in my neighbourhood, my interest in it is not very high. Until last night, however, it was not that I had any repugnances regarding this event. It was going on, and I tried to survive the five weeks without being sucked into the general madness that surrounds these 22 players and their ball at the moment.
Then came last night.
Well, let's start on Wednesday morning. I get up at 06:30 to catch my train to Cologne to arrive there with a delay of 40 minutes. That was still acceptable though. I spent the day looking at some flats and getting myself accustomed to the city that will soon be my new home. I enjoyed the sun, I went for a stroll in the park and I headed to the GIGA II building where I was supposed to co-host the KOTH match that evening. It all went quite well, although the server had some issues, we couldn't finish showing the match and the EC semi final has obviously been far more interesting, the viewer response was great and I was satisfied.
So far, so good.
Now I want to drive back home. I'm using a night train for that, as I did two weeks ago, because it's relaxing and you do not have to pay for a room in some hotel.
So I boarded the train, I found my compartment, which had six seats but where I was alone, the train started moving.
Now let's take the next few steps with exact times:
22:39
The train leaves the station, I boot my notebook, watch an episode of Futurama and decide to go to sleep. I take my pillow out of my bag and lay down.
23:00
The train stops, a German boards the train, comes into the compartment, occupies the opposite row of seats, which doesn't bother me, and lies down as well.
23:45
The train stops another time, I hear singing and shouting and I get up to see what's up. Ah, the Mexicans have arrived. Well, no problem, they will probably just find compartments and start sleeping as well.
23:47
A hot Mexican girl (called Maria, as I found out) starts walking towards my compartment. I decide to be a kind guy and make some room. I still have two seats left to stretch my feet and get some sleep, so I don't mind. I have a chat with Maria, I find out she's in Germany for the whole WC, travelling from town to town and that, surprise surprise, she's going to become a teacher for Spanish and English, almost like me.
00:15
The conversation stops as three Mexicans, who are obese to an extreme degree, decide to find a seat in my compartment. My moment with Maria is gone, and so is the little space I had left to lie down. Well, I still can try to get some sleep. Or so I thought.
00:30
Any thought of sleeping vanishes as the Mexicans start talking loudly about football. Ok, they probably have a lot to tell each other, they will stop eventually.
02:00
I have been trying to get some sleep, but with those guys shouting at each other every five minutes, it's just not possible. I seriously hope that they're going to leave the train in Berlin, which would give me three hours of sleep.
03:30
Jesus, it's one World Cup, it's not like you need to summarize 100 years of football history. They're still talking, talking, talking, while the other German in the appartment has started snoring like crazy and a young Mexican is looking at me viciously through the compartment door. Might he be Maria's boyfriend who's going to smash my skull in? Well, he luckily left after a few minutes.
03:45
Since sleeping seems to be no option, I seek refuge in another conversation. Too bad, that girl somehow managed to fall asleep and doesn't seem likely to wake up soon. Damn.
04:15
They stopped talking, finally! I am now however almost awake again, looking outside I see the sun going up and I wonder if I will ever get any sleep.
05:00
Berlin! Finally, the Mexicans leave, but so does Maria, and I don't have her number. Well, at least I will get some sleep.
05:10
Doesn't seem so, a mother and her child have entered and are keeping me awake till the very end.
08:30
I arrive home and I don't know whether to sleep or stay awake. I decide to read xfire, watch the ETTV replay of idle vs. demi and write this journal.
