Steady netcode is the reason why cpma>osp(as the mod). As well as many other less noticable fixes(probably).

And you can choose from CPM,PMC,CQ3,VQ3 in cpma.

Making it easy for everyone that plays with a 65 ping that feels like 20 pings? This making the online play more enjoyable for everyone. OSP netcode is pretty basic compared to cpma. 35-40 ping is pretty much the max you want to have to play seriously.

Actually it's broader support than that. There are the usual suspects but also a lot of newer players. Most specify if they mean VQ3 in CPMA.

The idea that faster means less strategic is not a fact and needs supporting. CPM's top player is rat, he's not defined by Vo0-speed or toxic-aim, rat is defined by his Thresh-prediction and smart play. Speed when correctly applied allows the strategist to overcome the aim-beast because prediction > reflexive aim. Speed also increases the importance of positioning and experience because there is no time to correct errors and over the long term the pace of the game being faster than you can think on the spot leads to much greater room for development. An example of this is the continual development of QW. Speed is a good thing for games because it makes the player the limiting factor and not the rules of the game, the player must be the focus of competitive game design.

My guess is that people see faster movement as reducing strategy because you're seeing it as an excess resource that can be used to correct for error. When games are played at the limit there is no excess available so this is not the case.

CPM works on larger maps too but is generally played on small maps because they're more exciting to watch and play, the trend in tournament maps in general is moving in this direction. Being out of position is still deadly in a small map and you don't get the zzzzzz of ztn but can still have long, interactive stand-offs (see the first rat-dziku CMC finals game on cpm24).

A lot of people would like to see CPM because we regard it is a more complete test of a player, the elements of movement, strategy and aim are in better balance through out the range of player skill levels and because of this greater range players are more varied and individual in their styles. Until very high levels of OSP are reached it is almost entirely defined by aim and aim is far too strong in comparison to predictive dodging. The rail is also excessively powerful which, while it can be compensated for in duel to some degree via strategy, it messes up TDM and CTF completely. For Q3 to be a successful 1v1 platform we need to grow the whole community by all the means at our disposal.

CPM has a tradition of competitive map development that OSP lacks and this tradition has been seen in Q4 with Swelt and Lukin, something that a long-term competitive platform will need. We also have an active design and development team with long-term experience of taking feedback and shaping the game as well as setting rules on issues such as RJ scripts. The OSP community has what is essentially default Q3 gameplay that will get distorted over time as players get better and better but the community would have a very difficult time accepting tweaks to that gameplay over the lifespan of a competitive game. Gameplay is an organic thing, the broad sweep of the rules need to remain the same but little things do need to be tweaked from time to time because what is balanced now may not be in the future as player knowledge, technique and peripherals improve.

On the bastardised RL point I'm inclined to agree that the implementation wasn't the best. In 1.33 which will be released soon the implementation is much better.

Objectively we do not know which gameplay is better or more suited to major competition. OSP inherited the largest and most skillful community because it is the default mod for the base gameplay, if CPM had been the default gameplay and OSP a mod with different gameplay we'd have seen a similar situation to the current one but reversed. OSP gameplay has shown itself to be a very good platform for competition but the CPM community also has successful and very exciting tournaments backing it up. Both are good choices because both are far superior competitive platforms to the alternatives.

Edit: don't let this degenerate into a vQ3 vs CPMA flamewar, we are still one community in contrast to Q4 as a seperate game and the CPL have not made their choice yet. vQ3 players and CPM players have valid reasons for prefering their own gameplay so let's respect each other. We can discuss the two modes of play without doing what we've done in the past (yes I've done it and so have plenty of people from both sides). The purpose of a debate like this is to let people who're undecided make up their minds, people who engage in the debate are usually not going to have their opinion swayed by the opposing view point.

The quake2/cpma style Megahealth is so much more intresting than vq3's version.

I find it super boring (same with tiered armours actually) but CQ3 is meant to be a sort of best of both and thus I couldn't just go er yeah just make it VQ3! :)

it adds more tactical depth to mh item control, the in control player can control the item to their advantage, and the down player has to have a bit more awereness to judge when it respawns, its not just a case of brainless timing for both players like in vq3

q2dm1 one of the greatest duel maps ever had this system and it worked perfectly

cpma isnt stuck to that system btw, it can also use standard vq3 timing, its up to the mapper

hmm, what about fast weapon change? if u have got the wrong weapon u can switch so fast it doestn matter that much. in vq3 (or q4) u will be punished for the error.

Instant weapon switch doesn't impose a built-in penalty, the penalty comes from the player's choice and thinking time. Choosing and firing the wrong weapon will get you killed and having to think about the correct weapon when ambushed will make you slower than the ambusher. You can use instant switch against people because they will go for the optimal weapon straight away, at the transition distance from LG being stronger to RL being stronger you can move forward to lure your opponent into making a rocket shot and move back knowing they'll have aimed at that transition point (if they think to aim beyond it then they're making a prediction and you have depth).

The player is the limiting factor, not the game rules.

I'd love to play cpma vq3, but there some changes to vq3 gameplay which somehow annoy me, like a changed spawn system, changed weaponspawntimes and so on :x

The cpma games I watched were always a huge fragfest. I prefer to see strategic matches like czm vs. z4muz on ztn at eswc (the year it was a team competition) or something like that.

i think thats a lot to do with the seriousness of the competition.

Fast paced fps are not always played that way when it gets serious/for money.

Check World Tour final, fatality brought voo's usual hyper fast game to a standstill and managed to beat him

And in the qw american tourney.. KovaaK played a really slow/controlled game on aerowalk to win.

If czm/z4mus played a competative match in cpm it would possibly be a lot more slow/tactical than most games you see with todays casual cpm players.

chess doesn't have armor control, only positional strategy.

chess has far more depth than just positional play., for example.. deception, offensive/defensive plays, trade-offs etc.

I want CPMA, I can't explain it better than ix did though, so go read his little piece.

OSP was played for many years in the competitional field, it's time to give CPM a shot on a professional mainstream level and see if it can live up to the community hype. It's pretty much the only way to determine just how well it plays in such situations. PK is somewhat similar to CPM, having fast and mostly free movement with similar weaponry yet still leaves room for thinking and it worked. Oh yeah and CPMA is far superior to OSP from a technical point of view, having a better netcode, and countles of other small fixes and tweaks, these things you just can't deny.

edit: Also just like ix mentioned the movement isn't everything, so all you people who rage how fast free movement ruins everything and leaves no tactical elements should utilize your own brain for a moment just to realize how flawed that argument sounds.

Not to mention the fact that railgun duels seen in vq3 are boring to watch.

thank you, what i dislike abt vq3 so much is that everything changes so much once theres a railgun in play...in CPM, 1. the rail is a properly balanced weapon that fits the game well 2. thanks to the netcode is actually usable, and not a matter of how used u are to playing at ping, 3. isnt the only route to victory. in vq3, a railess player is totally screwed...however players like dziku in CPM very rarely use rail, just watch the games from the CMC on cpm1a, you will see what i mean, makes for more interesting play and strategy.

the only real downside i can see to using CPMA gameplay is that the community is already established, with the highskill players having been around for ages etc... but, that applies to vQ3 also

Railers aren't the problem with VQ3 it's good shafters. If someone tries to "all rail" you in VQ3 and you lose then you just aren't a very smart player.

Go watch any cooller demo ever (And the rest of the Russian army bar Mikes) to see how you can win by barely touching the railgun.

i kno its by far the weakest weapon in the game, but it does have its uses, when u try and cut some1 off and hes moving at speed, just fire a few plasma shots, slows him right down you see, and right after launch a rocket at his feet, hes dead, also on dm2, when he goes for the RA, with strong shoot at wall, fire rocket on platform, shoot at wall, rocket at feet, etc, its just more fun than riotgun+Electrobolt insta gayness

Thanks ix, honestly thats exactly what I wanted. A lot of people feel strongly about promode, as even I did at one point. CPMA players have their opinions and I wanted to hear them, you did exactly what I was hoping for.

q3 has won the poll easily, and if it is chosen like it should, if cpm or osp is picked it will spur back attention to the other mod. It's a win win situation whatever side your on.

My one question though, if movement isn't as important, why where rl scripts taken out. Seemed to me like elpajuo's skill was much better when he was using them.

The armor systems are different, but trust me. Armor means just as much in osp as it does in cpm.

I really appreciate everyone that gave their opinion on how they feel and didn't go into just trying to shit on the other mod.

And as the anon mentioned, that match on ztn (czm vs z4muz) is one of my favorite matches ever. It seemed so slow and everytime czm was about to do something he got aimed out of it, he held his ground and eventually won the game with his brain. That game to me is what OSP stands for.

Either way, I can't wait to see some demos from a game I care about.

Because it performs an action that requires skill and timing perfectly. Players can and should do it by hand, you can still play in a fast style and use a lot of rocket jumps, our aim wasn't to remove them but with the armour and damage settings as they were rocket jumps were far too inexpensive for their advantage so players could keep on doing them over and over. This would get dull and lead to shallow gameplay in the long run.

it tells me how much damage i made at my random rocket. which leads to that i can calculate on how much health my opponent have left, and chose to either attax or not.

Players in Quake 2/3 make different pain sounds depending on there health, that way you can tell within 25h how much health someone has.

QW had different pain 'yelps' depending how hard you hit someone

ironically, by the time you hit that random rocket and turned in another direction, your opponent has picked up some health/armor until next time you'll face eachother. Making your health calculation pretty damn useless.

Nah, armor in OSP gives low values and is always on 2/3 protection. In vq3 you can grab 2 YA's and have as much protection as the RA guy, without the risk of having to fight the other guy for the RA.

If you're telling me 150 armor with 3/4 protection(cpm RA) is as important as 100 armor with 2/3 protection(vq3 RA), you're kidding. The RA-protection percentage is usually unique on the map, unattainable by any means other than actually grabbing the RA itself.

CPM has some very exciting big confrontations and toe to toe battles over the RA.

It's just different. In CPMA the Red is more important, in VQ3 the Amount of Armour is more important (And obviously coupled with health in both games).

You're looking at it the wrong way. While the older tiered system is superior for teamplay, q3's style is more suited for 1v1. It is only really evident on maps like ztn or dm13 but q3's armor system allows for a macro strategy of armor control. Watch some of the top russians on ztn. They play a very hit and run style. This way their opponent is always needing health. They eventually will deplete their resources (h/a) and the stacked player can move in for the kill. If you control ra+one ya +mh. Your opponent will be limitied to one YA and will most likely lose when you fight. This is nearly non-existant in cpm. It's basically do as much damage as you can faster than your opponent and you'll kill him. If you really want to have an example of strategy and item control > * look at doom3 or netquake.

And armour control as a strategy was absent how? It's like me trying to tell you that in CPMA you can control weapons but in OSP this doesn't work for some random reason.

Just because you can't pick it up off of the bat doesn't mean you can control it, on cpm22(kinda hub3aero), I usually grab RA, and then head to lockdown the YA, fighting off the other guy from and picking up the YA after I've taken some damage or I do damage to myself so I can walk away from there with the YA when the next RA spawn is coming up.

The only reason I don't see that hit and run strategy working in cpm is because the map sizes are smaller and the movement making agressive play a bit easier than in vq3, but it could still be rather doable on cpm15 by a fast player.

He didn't say there wasn't any armour control in CPMA he said that type of armour control isn't (And it isn't).

personally i find vq3 armour/mh control a tad boring, you seem to spend too much time running around collecting armour instead of fighting

Surprising this can happen in cpm too IE grab RA self damage/take damage slightly, pickup YA, just it happens less and isnt as easy to do :P

It is definitely the way to go. We should stop playing a non updated mod, just switch to the same gameplay (vq3) but under cpma 1.33 mod. Our clan server was switched a few days ago from osp to cpma/vq3, it has met our expectations.

i play more cpma 1v1 than osp 1v1 now, but i still prefer osp for big tournaments. in my opinion cpma is more of a 'funmod'. what i dislike the most is

armors giving too much, meaning armors getting alot more important in the games. and timing is not as skillfull as aim in my opinion. aim is awarded more in osp, less in cpma.

also, many times when both players are stacked with armors and weapons, you can come out from a fight with like 25/125 H/A. its pretty much impossible to kill someone with MG (requires 25 hits with your 50 bullets of MG that you spawn with), maby you get one YA, but he will hit you with a rocket and you fly up vertically and lg, lg, rg death :p). and with 25/125 H/A you only need two 25healthbubbles (which are pretty easy to find on most cpm maps) to be ready to kick ass again.

weaponswitch and the skill that comes with it, described pretty good here, http://www.challenge-world.com/forum/ikonboar...;hl=maertz and even confessed by arQon(!!!!) :p. it's easy +backing and LG, LG, LG, LG and then throwing a RG or RL up his face. doesnt really promote agressive play imo.

rl knockback beeing vertical on most direct hits, meaning you can shaft him as long as you can have 60%+ LG on him while he is the air. and then finishing him with a rail when you drop your lg accuracy. making about 250-300ish damage in two-three seconds, and its very easy aswell...

these are some things i think why you not should use cpma for big tournaments.

And the mg is really powerfull in cpma I get loads of kills with it and i only get 20-25%. When your talkign about top-lvl players getting 40+% ts just much far too powerful a weapon in vQ3 and vQ4.

The weaponswitch thing is an interesting argument, i think that comes down to taste/preference.

Rl Knockback is getting fixed with 1.33, I'm pretty sure you've heard this allready so i'm assuming your mentioning this just to have a dig :(

CPMA armour is stronger, but armour is just as important in both. What a lot of people don't like is how the armour scales in CPMA.

In fact I think the three things that most people are put off from CPMA are also the three things that CPMA fans think are the best things ever

1. Air control
2. Instant Weapon Switch
3. Tiered Armours (And the MG! :P)

Yeah I think that armours play an equal role in the games however in CPMA the red armour is more important than a VQ3 red armour but the whole set in VQ3 is more important (If that makes sense) and thus making armour in both games just as important but with a different focus.

Timing is more skillful in CPMA though (Unlike what he said) due to the XX clock.

timing is equally skillful in both. whileyou have xx in cpm, the maps are smaller and the time to get to a certain point on the map shorter than is osp. in osp you can calculate the armor spawn time exactly to the point, but you have to spend more thoughts on how and on which way to approach it

no didnt know about the RL, but i just tested it, its better now, but still with instant weaponswitch you can do overpowered combos. and i dont think armours equally important in cpma/osp. and to make it clear, MG does 5 dmg per bullet in cpm, 7 in vq3, correct me if im wrong here... and it does ONE damage per hit on a person with RA. thats sick.

Why should you have an overpowered weapon for losing a frag? also the strong armours make up for the extra dps players can deal due to the weaponswitch

because when dieng it almost always put you in a 0/100 situational chance to frag him back. and when both players started with 100/200 H/A before the fight and one end up with 15/70 H/A i deserve to be able to kill him fast IMO.

Word, the only thing I didn't like about that though was two things (one of these may be wrong)

1. MG Start ammo is lower? Cess or not it's a part of VQ3.
2. The starting spawns can be really unbalanced since you can spawn anywhere, less of a problem in CPM more of a problem in VQ3.

you right about that. but let me make a little assumption here, since i havent played ztn in cpma vq3 yet. when player a spawns at rail, where does player b probably spawn? pg, sg maybe behind the sg spawn towards rl. mhm i think player a can put a lot of pressure in the beginning with rail on his opponent. but that is just a guess. have to test it. but q3 doesnt work properly on mac atm, at least with 10.4.7 :x

I can't recall but I don't think it's quite the same as in OSP where you tend to get the same two starting spawns together.

I'm just an average player, never attended a tournement or so, excpet a few local lans with friends, so i'm very far from competitive player, and even further from pro.
I play to have fun (and i didn't have fun this week playing q4 :( ), an am not interested in vey heavy stuff/code/rweaks.
And for that osp was/is perfect to me. So why use cpma &vq3 instead of osp & vq3, which is much more easier?

played to many mods anyways...thats why stopped playing q4 since yesterday =) i ll try again after the release of q4 1.3

OSP is a mod
CPMA is a mod

VQ3 is the default Quake 3 Arena gameplay
CPM is the default CPMA gameplay

OSP supports VQ3 and CPM (A very old version) but is old and out of date on many features

CPMA supports CPM (New and Old versions) and VQ3 and is 'new' and up to date.

Vq3 aiming is boring , targets move slowly and lg slows them down EVEN MORE.
in cpma targets move fast (no im not meaning bunny just strafedodgin) and lg wont slowyou down if get hit , only punch bit to opposite way.

cpma vq3 weapon respawn time is longer on maps like ztn and aero (15 seconds instead of 5 i think). is there a command to get it like osp?

I think you do a mapconfig for it, to keep on the server. Or if you're feeling lazy/repetetive you can /callvote weaponrespawn 5. Or whichever you want.

Getting tired of people saying that cpm is all movement and no strategy. Guess you've never specced me in a 1v1 game. Go watch some Challenges seasons 1-3 demos of ospers toofing some cpmers. If movement is the deciding factor, then why isn't mew #1?

I said movement can trump excellent strategy. And no, why would I have ever specced you in a 1v1 game? Of course people that win thousands of dollars in osp lan tournaments will beat some regular cpmars... Matr0x vs. z4 and daler? ya, guess that doesn't really work for your point though :)

I've been playing CPM since 2000 and haven't see this. Are you saying more strategic OSP players lose when they play CPM because they can barely move at all? Once you have a competent level of movement then strategy is far more important. If you really do believe that movement > strategy in CPM link me some demos that demonstrate it.

aim is still the most important factor in cpma even though much less than osp

check fazz beating loads of top cpma players when he placed 4th in the cpma tourney at qlan2; his cpm movement skills were almost non-existant

hehe he didn't place 4th cowboy but he is the best OSPer i've seen in CPMA ;D

They misunderestimated me

I reckon they should choose to run VQ3 using CPMA because of:
* MVD (not only demos but for GTV - you only need 1 cameraman in the server (correct me if i'm wrong?))
* Netcode

Hopefully CPL will go the whole way and choose CPM too. To the Q4 players who replied "Q3 is old - we want new maps/gameplay!" - CPM has (at the very least) 7 great duel maps and is alot more exciting to spectate than VQ3.
I don't think its that impossible - afterall, they chose Painkiller once...

osp a mod with promode and vq3 in it, but the vq3 is original there.

cpm a mod with vq3 cq3 and cpma in it, but there are cpma the orignal.

better netcode in cpma, more stable, lots of things fixed etz.. If cpl picks q3 it would be stupid be stupid to pick osp that is that many year back in development. when did 1.03 got realised?... think about that.. cpma still develops, latest version come 15/07-2006.

BUT i like the cpma physic more, more intressting games tbh, ppl are just to lazy to learn. even if it will be CPMA or VQ3. plz make it CPM

Because watching the so called "strategic chess match" of vq3 games is about as bloody boring as watching bass fishing or golf. While I'm sure these sports require huge amounts of skill, I would rather watch paint dry.

cpma is promode right? thats why u connect to a public server playing CA promode all the noobs love it cause it requires no skill and they all just rj about and only use rocket and think theyre better than you, there's alot more skill involved in OSP/vq3

CA in vq3 is noskill as well. Try CPM in one of the deathmatch modes.

Making people in the air a free hit seems pretty noob to me... it's not like bunnying players are unhittable, it just gives you a chance to dodge enhancing the skill of dodge vs aim rather than the pure aim contest that is vq3.

so you actually think once or even twice before you make that jump.

You still have to make that choice, players in the air are easier to hit than those on the ground in general.

but still it is harder to hit a person who is changing his flyingrout, so you have a bigger chance to get out of there. but in general i do agree.

Ok , so its Q3 on CPL.. but please make it CPMA .. Fast weapon switching , aircontrol. Can you ask for more?? Quakeworld is my old game and CPMA is the closest QW you get in newer quakes.
