well, when Q3 came out, it was also like full of shit n stuff rite... now q3 is new (not alot of patches) and so... so if more updates and fixes come out, like the game will own and stuff rite....

id/Raven should have seen what was the state of Quake 3 1.32 + OSP 1.03 / CPMA, what the mod teams done and what the community likes. Q4 should have taken of where Q3 ended in terms of features. They are reinventing the wheel. So what if Q4 will be good some time in the future (when, is debatable), its contempory Q3 vs Q4. Just imagine if syncherror was active from the start of quake 4, researching the different mod communities, giving valuable feedback back to id / raven, I think then we would have seen the 'king of deathmatch' returned to all its glory, but it did not happen.
Ive said this before and ill say it again, its not what id/raven did wrong with Q4, its what they did right with Q3.

Q4 is more interesting than vq3 because of that (and by the same token cpm/q2/qw/wsw are all far better than q4 or vq3), but the q4 engine is just so dire

k, i didnt play the new 1.3 patch much, but i think if there where the same maps played in q4 as in q3 they would be playd on the same way.

now if you play the same maps from q1 (qw) or q2 in q3 then there will be a hughe difference.

one of the major problems is quake 4 is different than q3 q2 and q1...

the name suggested it was going to be quake but when they released it...it wasnt...unfortunatly.

I was looking forward to the release of q4 but I was trying to ignore the hype and all the "it plays just like quake 3" bs..because that same stuff was said about doom3...fool me once? shame on you! fool me twice? cant get fooled again(lol couldnt resist).

I tried as hard as I could to give q4 a chance...I waited and waited....patch after patch...

I uninstalled the game the same day 1.3 came out because I didnt see any improvment, and that napalm gun was just too dumb for words...but I reinstalled it a couple days later because I got to thinking I didnt give it a real chance....well I played it for almost a month after reinstaling it, and it just isnt quake...the only thing "quake" about quake 4 is the name and the fact id worked on it trying to correct what raven fuktup. I uninstalled it again and will never install it on any pc I own ever again. and that napalm gun is still too dumb for words.....except for these : if I want UT weapons ill play UT.

with the "gameplay changes" that 1.3 introduced I realised nobody was willing to turn q4 into a real quake game so I just gave up.

I hope they do make a q5 while I still care about games...and I hope id learned their lessons from q4...

I disagree strongly, been playing quake series for over 10 years now and in my book they are still by far the best games ever released (fk starcraft/consoles etc.) ....

Q1 was the original and it was incredible. Q2 was different but I grew to love it (rail/dbl jumps/weap drops, q2dm1!), Q3 was a major disapointment (bland movement, poor maps, too cess/aim heavy/arcade) but I played it anyway because thats where the competition was and I've grown to appreciate what a solid engine it is. CPM has become my favourite quake game, and it has made me apperciate what an incredible game QW is, and that it is still the best vanilla quake game by a long way.

Q4 was ok, it had more interesting movement dynamics than q3, but the doom3 engine is a waste of time for multiplayer (60fps at best and even then the game feels horrible even on latest hardware, terrible netcode etc.)

So for me yes Q4 is worse than q3 and indeed the worst version of all the quakes, hell even WSW is a much better game.

Q3 and Q4 are both terrible DM games, no point arguing which is worse when you could be playing something far better than either (qw tdm, q2 ctf, cpma etc)

Well, ya see, people wouldn't hate Q4 so much if IT DIDNT HAVE MORE BUGS THAN A RELEASE CANDIDATE OF WINDOWS. Now if the game had less than the average amount of bugs that a game typically has and autodownloading worked, then I would still be playing it. However, since they're still working on basic shit like that, then I cba to bother with it.

I prefer Q4 over Q3. Q4 has 6 years to reach an excellent level.

I just got done playing the q3 demo. Its almost as dark as d3 turning on vertex did not help any. So ppl need to stop and think b4 rambling on about how q3 is this and that play the older point releases and see what it went through to get where it is. It didnt happen over night.

I must say though the dm7 test map is alot better than the newer dm7.

hehe, q3 even havent good maps for 1x1 =)))) just a joke, no offense to q3. look carefully at the current q3 mappool (actually good 1x1 maps were added to mappool in a time of several years, not in first year for sure - and still adding goes on, nodm9 for example).

it is all about tweaking. long tweaking - good product.

longtime quakers sure know that such discussions were allways while the games were changing (lanq1-qw-q2-q3-cpm-q4).

only doom2->quake1 wasnt done in such way because of 1) quake1 has a real 3D world 2) those guys were probably better (smarter and older?) than modern legions of kids

just the smart people are the minority =) and we have all this shit =)

Q1 (we could say QW instead of it from some moment without any mistake) - its a very solid game. fun, fast. just Quake.

Q2 is fun too. still its fun to play. great maps, a huge difference from any other quake and maybe not quake =) q2 fans are the most unique quakers (because so small part of quakers can understand them).

Q3 is all about balanced deathmatch and was tweaked so much and so good

Q4 is the modern mix =) one can find lovely features here. some problems still here but even qw and q2 are still under tweaking =)
