I had the same problem.
Windows wanted to save the file as .zip
I dl'ed and then renamed it to .pk4, but quake still said it was missing. Then I dl'ed again and this time directly saved it as .pk4. Now it works.

check your config voO, if only one of these commands are on "1" u'll have black textures:

I have never even made a Q4 config. I recently installed q4 to watch some demos again, installed 1.3, installed q4max 0.76b, installed some maps, thats it.

I also must add: Seeing "new" Q3 demos on ESR excites me more than Q4 demos.

I don't think its frustrating anymore.. I try to load a demo with q4max and itll give me the pak files im missing in console (these rage demos had 4).. then I go to http://q4files.escapedturkey.net/quake4/pk4s/ and download the ones I need and they work fine.

I take this for granted and use it to play every demo I watch, without this command my demos rarely work :) It is a shame about the ongoing problems, but you never know...it might get better.

hmm somehow i wonder why everyone is havin gproblems with the demos... maybe 2-3 of the last ~40 demos i watched didnt work at first but i just had to look into the comments and dl a .pak file that was linked.
believe it or not, i have more problms with q3 demos. invis player models for example

nope, but well, i reinstalled q3 like 2 weeks ago anyway and dled everything new, now it worked, at least in the demos i treid after that, but my point i that q3 also has some probs and its just that q3 players know how to avoid them. same is true for q4 imho

i'm not sure.. i never really had problems in q3 with fresh demos.. but i don't know as of yet what the underlying problem with q4 is, so i won't judge.. that pak-download seemed to work for the final game, so that's not really a problem at all? don't know about the other demos tho.. maybe i need more paks.. whatever that means :ċ

My Q4 demo playing ritual:

Open with q4replay, check auto-rename, uncheck demo_enforceFS, hit launch. Q4 starts and drops to console with error (for example) "couldn't load maps/mp/l4dm2_1". A quick "map mp/l4dm2_1" makes q4 reload the engine (this time with the proper map included). playNetDemo q4replay and the demo plays. Didn't need all the maps (was missing q4req1) to play these demos.

Hope this helped someone...

Well, with your help i ALMOST managed to play those demos.. but they still dont work :(, it starts to load the map and then throws me back to console, damn q4 :(.

Also, cant find 3 missing paks anywhere, not even from escapedturkey =(.
Those 3 paks are:

supercomm.pk4
timesup.pk4

seriously, if the map from escapedturkey works for some (i had no problem to watch this demo with it) then the file will work for all ;>

some magic "after second download it worked" looks more like a user error than q4's fault...

but what I still couldn't figure out... where the paypal-donate button is on the escapedturkey page :)

and why can't people still just not bother if they can't cope with this? don't click the link if there is a Q4 written in front ffs and play whatever game you like :P

hmmm, I just started the Q4 1.3 200 odd meg download so I can watch these demos but I see from this thread that Q4 still doesn't work! Oh well, better cancel that download
