I can't believe this demo problem is still here. The game has been out a year now. No casual person will go through the trouble of finding out why they can't watch the demo, then figure out exactly which files are missing, then search the internet to download the files, then figure out how to properly install the files. Can't you just use the autodownload technology already in the game for demos?
This problem is an example of the difference between amateur and professional. Pro's would have taken care of this issue right away. If people can't play the game because of this sort of technical difficulty, the game won't be worth shit. And demos are the main form of coverage for Q4, and yet it's a remarkably large pain in the ass to watch them. And i'm sure if Q4 had gtv, the problem would exist there also.
Maybe it's all deliberate. Some form of sabotage. After all, the less people playing the game, the higher chance the so-called 'pros' have of winning tournaments. Of course, it would be dumb on their part, cause with this non-spectator tournament setup, the amount of money is pathetically low compared to any major spectator sport out there. The truth is, we've already seen the peak of non-spectator tournaments. It reached it's peak... 6 years ago? Prize purses, except for the world tour last year, have stayed the same for roughly 6 years. I guess when you do corrupt, cheap shit to win, you sort of get what you deserve. It must be some sort of poetic justice.
It's like these cpm people who say they don't want new people in their game. Why would they not want new people? It's because they're cowards who are afraid they might get their asses kicked by new people. They'd rather sit there in their illusionary world believing they're playing the best game ever, and they are the gods of this game. Must be quite the ego-stroke.
But, what people should work towards is getting as many people as possible to play the game. Even if that means you descend from 5th best player to 500th. More people = better. More spectators = better. The best way to make those two things happen is to make the game as easy as it can be to get in and play and get in and watch. Quake 4 fails miserably on both accounts. Beyond making it easy to play and watch (something CS excels at with Steam), make the game as good as it can be for specs and players. Make it fun, make it challenging. Business shouldn't be solely about making money. It should be about creating something worth a damn, and getting paid for it.
Even if, with a larger base of players/specs, you went from a top 3 player to a top 20, you could still make substantially more money. Look at the 50th best football player. The guy makes millions. This ethic of, less people/less specs = better, is really just stupid, not only corrupt and cheap.
Why was Microsoft the one and not Apple? Because Microsoft did a better job at making computers user-friendly. At the moment, user-unfriendliness is a big problem in 'pro-gaming'. It's a big problem for players and specs.
GG both.
