Bout 500 pages to read and two assignments on Hobbes and Aristotle by 22. meanwhile i've scheduled going out tomorrow and going skiing the whole weekend (in addition to lectures and groupsessions) t_t

procrastination is dangerous when you need to read say 30pages a day.. putting off 7days work - 240 heavy pages to read, can't really compress that into one day properly xP

In the UK physics doesn't involve that much independent reading: you have about 20 contact hours a week, some problem solving sessions, and that's about it. The PhD students we talked to said that they basically never read outside of the course literature they were given, or at least they didn't have to achieve - Some of them obviously read science literature for their own benefit.

The difference that they stressed was the contact time: 20 hours is quite a lot, humanities subjects often only get 6 hours. While physics students might spend a lot more time in the lab or attending problem sessions, the humanities students are often to be found with their heads buried in piles of books, reading up for the next lecture. I could be completely wrong but that was my impression from the information we were given - I know which I'd rather do out of the two options.

You mean you need to read stuff or you want to read stuff? For me reading gets boring when I know I have to do it, everything else but what you have to read looks so much more interesting.

The main reason I never considered a humanities subject for my degree is the subjectivity of exams - It all seems so random, at a-level at least, as to what grade you actually get. Let me give a number for my answer any day of the week.

Yeah, i would like to read.. I read alot i shouldn't as well yeah, it's always more interesting. But usually within some scope that it may benefit even so.

I agree with the subjectivity, but i really don't give a damn about grades - never did.. But it really is perplexing how some things i write do really well while others almost completely fail - i really struggle to see the difference.. Don't think i've a shot at A's at all now tbh, as all the exams this year are 1. written/penpaper and 2. on location without any look-up help. My memory is too poor for that.

You see, now that we have computers and books, I don't see much point in actually remembering any fact outright. Theories and ideas sure, but just facts like who thought of what and when did he think of it, what's the point? Outside of an exam you'd just look it up, it wouldn't even take you that long with google at your side. I suppose they're supposed to test you on understanding, but it never works that way: someone who memorises 20 quotes and namedrops all the time will always get a higher grade.

I took a resit on an exam where I got a C in january, to my mind I did worse in the resit, but the mark came back an A, maybe I'm just not as good a judge as I thought I was.

Well it's strange.. Some of the subjects have exams that should be written at home.. and so btw does all the things higher up the ladder, like a master assignment, so.. not really sure why they have it. i write horribly ugly as well so, i'm feeling lucky and relieved when its not outright failed on its share uglyness :P

You mean ugly as in badly composed? Or ugly as in bad handwriting? My handwriting is illegible at the best of times.

For me, the worst part about written answers, coursework and the like, is that I tend to wander off topic for large sections of it. My answers would be good, if they only answered the question they were asking =oP

Well, ugly as in bad handwriting, crossed out words, moved lines etc. because i'm used to typing on a computer it becomes very hard to see quickly what i've written and move and change things as i see fit when i write manually - not to mention that it lacks built in spell correction ;)

lol. My problem is I'm too concise and assume the "other people" (examiners and the like) are able to use their brain and are smart. So I don't explain down to the every detail (This crops up as part of my personality type in every personality type thing ever).

I'm the opposite really, I always feel like the examiner might not know what I'm talking about, so I write more and more and more. The one exception is maths exams where I find it tedious to write down every single cancellation and manipulation.

It's kind of annoying that you have to assume the examiner knows absolutely nothing about the subject.

not sure what you mean by contact hours, but I used to have around 30h a week at uni, and then homework in 2-3 subjects which usually each eats up at least 1 afternoon, sometimes 2.
Now it's slowly getting better, dropping some lectures and I'm almost done anyway (with lectures at least), so it's more like 20h a week. :)

Contact hours are hours spent being taught by the uni: lectures, lab work, tutorials, problem sessions. Anything where you've been told "be here to learn". Homework wouldn't really count towards it.

30 hours is quite a lot of contact time, for physics in the uk they say about 20. They recommend you spend another 15 - 20 hours a week studying by yourself, working through class problems etc, so it adds up to about 40 total - I dunno how many students actually do that though =oP.

I was probably at like 50-70h in total during my first 3 semesters :> I had some extra stuff from economy to do aswell tho, not just physics.

70 is a massive amount =oE, that's like 10 hours a day, more than I do at school at the moment. If you did a part time job on top of that you'd have almost no time to do anything else.

I didn't work at all during that time, but there was no fucking way I could have worked either :D
