Varg_unge, I'm not sure if anyone here is old enough in the game to remember him though.
Of the more famous players I'd say [9]oKKun, since he was the first (and only?) of the good gamers appearing to have a decent life outside gaming IMHO (working at digital illusions), as well as always having his hair dyed in some fancy color.
[9]Sniket was probably the best QW, 1on1 player in the world, so I'd have to mention him as well.
Zero4, wasnt as popular as Fatality, but better than him. People didnt wanan belive that fact, and began worshiping Fatality more. Fatality fears Zero4, soon Fatality will fear his life because he made the mistake of dropping out of school to lose at games. How can a failure be your hero?

Tru dat...
In my opinion, quake could be taken as serious as any so-called proper extra-curricular activities like violin, but till this moment, giving up school for pro-gaming is just too adventurous.
Python said Elan had to be in Korean Army for 3 years last year... And PowerK, afaik, is playing CS now. s21.0 did still participle in WCG2001 as "ice210", although he didn't get into double elimination.
Fatal1ty its the player that won more money out of playing videogames (again and obviously, leaving the asians out). Appart from playing, hes winning loads of crap with the hardware that has his trademark on it, appart from that car, etc.
So, I guess the best thing this dude did was leaving school to give it a try, and man, what a fuckin try. Anyone that likes playing competitively would leave school or whatever the person was doing to actually do something you like to do, in his pure form. So stop the "I study because I want to be... or I like to work on this -insert normal work here, studies needed or not- because... STFU.
Normal works are works, things you will not do on your free time. And when you really enjoy things, those things happen on free time. Pro-gaming its like 24hours of free time, because your "work-time" its based on what you like to do more. This means you have "even more free time" to experiment new things besides your favorite thing to do (gaming), never forgetting intelectual exercitation to not become a Paris Hilton zombie, and also being fit. Basicly, doing whatever the fuck you like to do the 24h of the time, being paid for it.
Having a lifestyle like that, based on what you like to do, its really hard to accomplish, but not impossible. Its only impossible if you don't even try to do something about it, giving up the fight too early and being surronded more and more by "real life".
lol? fatal1ty is famouse, got $ and his name with nickname gives him 100% work alltime, better worry for childrens in china, there they quit school in 3 class and plays cs and wow :))
fatality failure, what a joke :DDDDDDDDDDD
Q1/q2 I think I'd hafta go with Thresh. He was just so far ahead of his time. Quake 3 I'd haft a go with Zero4. He makes it look effortless to be that good!
Lakerman, a genius at QW, he completly re-invented how the maps were played and won the only international QW tournament and ofcourse the owner of T4 in Q3.
Just remembered a funny talk in that duel between SteLam and James Eric mentioned =)
*For those who didn't watch it, to get the right feeling of atmosphere I'll say just two words - constant ownage*
So, at about 10min of game at pro-t4 ...
James.masK was railed by [sk.SteLam]
James.masK: poc
James.masK ate [sk.SteLam]'s rocket

Everyone usually admires players due to the fact that they simply own everyone in their path. Personally, I admire people that take as much from the game as they can, and try and give it back to the community. For example, Sujoy and Polosatiy. Sujoy has made an awesome resource/news site for every kind of gamer and Polo takes in new talent and turns them into amazing players. We need more Polo's and Sujoy's imo, and we would be one step to world peace, and ending world hunger.
it's not orginal, but who cares.
doesn't have to be a gamer from like 10 years ago, dunno why ppl have such an obsession with trying to name the obscure.
Thresh, Lakerman, fatal1ty, toxic and czm. No, can't choose :P
Thresh had no competition. Lakerman was wicked, fatal1ty just worked through it all, toxic is unstoppable and czm is the coolest there ever was, is and ever will be :)
hehe. what was the story about him actually? I only remember him from some exhibition games vs shub, both with very high pings.
I mostly remember LordVader's gun shaking all the time.
Was he succesful in any way?
was a big fatal1ty fan back in the days.
then i got a huge love for czm's crazy style.
also watching cooller when he is on top is a blast, he never dodges rockets unless he knows he gonna lose more than 1 hp.
nowadays I have to say fox and rapha, hands down.
... oh yea, and of course spartaaaaaaaaaaaa!
:)
edit: dammit I have a weakspot for the americanos, add zero4, viju and cl0ck to that list.
How times change... The only thing I know about Blue is that his nick was handy in naming the "blue bug". But in 2002 he was well-known enough to be called a hero by some.
johan 'toxic' quick.
- best tdm player of all time
- dominant dueling champion
- most entertaining style to watch
- best attitude and respect for all players
Shub, Fox, Blue, LakermaN, Scion, Immortal, proZaC and Toxic, Tox, Toxjq or whatever you want to call him.
After seeing Tox in the last international match against Poland, I am just overwhelmed with admiration.
zik and avekkk must have nightmares after the match
i think most people chooses from the time they have been watching quake
i started in quake 3
and the best was zero4
for me he is still the best
i remember watching his demos and thinking HOW THE FUCK DOES HE HAS THAT AMAZING ROCKET WITH 10 SENS
it was the most amazing thing back then
i remember the quakecon final he won over z4muz, he owned him so hard
then the level went up from there
lexer, unkind, cooller, cypher, rapha
i never liked cooller to much, his item control its amazing but for me he was not very good predicting where the enemy could be, and also i remember him losing mental control very often
i think rapha is the top of quake level right now
maybe hes aim isnt the best but his tactics are superior to anything i ve ever seen, its very rare seeing him picking a fight in wich he doesnt has the advantage to win it, and his defensive rockets are crazy
from what ive seen, he just out aims rapha, he starts fight he should lose and win em with aim, i think rapha aim in the last tourneys was bit off, and from what i heard of the sens bug, i might be right
I can hardly remember which player I found awesome. I can recall games of LeXer and Daler on t2, as well as fatality on the same map. I also recall liking SteLam - he had such a slow sensitivity. I also remember Kane on dm14 and other players...
However, I think fat is the player that struck me most. I think it was due to the hyping and all. I also copied his attitude: practise, practise, practise. But I was mostly interested in tdm and not duel so every member of EYE and ic are basically my heroes :)
hehe i did not focus on ctf in q3 at all. i just started to play it in ql :) tdm = osp; ctf = ql. or something. was the ctf squad as succesful as the tdm team?
