The obvious choice as you already noticed Petrucci and LTE would be Dream Theater. Even though most of their songs have vocals they have alot of Instrumental songs and songs with very long instrumental parts.

Because they do not like operaic singing styles. Labrie CAN sing lower and more hardcore stuff though, but since most haters dont care enough to look into that they hate on him instead. Not surprisingly most haters of certain dream theater members comes from the jazz community. Which can REALLY be a bunch of arrogant stupid bunch of pricks sometimes :)

When will you people realise its not the singer's fault. They always used operaic singers and write the songs and music to fit in with a more operaic singing style. I like that style myself on occasion and quite a few great bands use that style, or used it when they had a singer capable of it, like Bruce Dickinson could do like 10-20 years ago, but cant (or wont) now. If there is one that Labrie does better than many other singers its bringing emotion to the song and able to do those awesome vocal melodies so well. Instead of just singing to look cool like some people do. To each his own I suppose, but listen to Elements of persuasion if you care enough to listen to him singing some lower bits. They actually tried some other singers before Labrie you know, but none of them managed to perform as technically (and many times the melodic bits) as well as he does.
So I unless they start writing songs with another singer in mind (or singer similar to Labrie's skills), my guess Is that switching singers would sound shit.
When you listen to a singer though there are so many different things you need to look at, such as: vocal Control,
Power, Range, Articulation, Phrasing, use of Dynamics, Uniqueness, plus Impact & Influence.

I agree with what you say. What I said would be more of an effect of them changing their looks on how things should be sung :P If you get what I mean.

Reminds me of the Norwegian singer Sissel Kyrkjebø. She can sing higher and clearer than anyone I've ever heard, but, AFAIK, she can't go very deep, so she doesn't fit all kinds of music or songs. If you get the chance, listen to her sing Ella Fitzgeralds song, Summertime. It gives me goosebumps whenever I listen to it :)

Thanks for clarifying yourself. I dont agree with you that they should change their "act" though really, but it would be interesting to hear them perform a few songs "the other way", if just to notice the difference :).

Dream Theater are getting rather samey/reptitive if you ask me. Just like Iron Maiden.

99% of Iron Maiden songs sound exactly the same.

You must be kidding!? The best thing about dream theater is their constant change of rythms mixed with different melodies and making each song very unique. If anything is predictable with dream theater it is the fact that they will borrow ideas from other bands and you can sometimes hear this (like the octavarium song is so utterly, and brilliantly inspired by Pink Floyd), also of course the changes in tempo they make, building up fast songs to extremes and then releasing it again. But to be honest these changes are made so well that its not like Opeth's ghost reveries at all.

Yes they're different but generally if you ask me, Dream Theater is quite boring these days. While it does sound different it's still quite samey. It's the same way that Tool is samey, they have their "sound" and they're going to stick to it.

Compare their last 4 albums. You're looking at 4 completely different kind of albums, one concept album, one very melodic album, one heavier album and latest one being very progressive. I am not sure how you can say these 4 very different albums musically (and lyrically as well, just think about 6 degrees) are too boring,
And when it comes to them sticking to the same "sound", its very simple. They have a very big fanbase around the world. Like Portnoy, said if you stray too far away from your sound you will lose alot of the fans that fell in love with that sound. There are many bands that made the mistake of not sticking somewhat close to their sound. Look at metallica, they really used to have a kickass sound LOAD, but when they didnt use the sound the fans loved alot of their fanbase has left.
The farthest DT strayed from their sound was the Falling into infinity album. But despite that, their soundspectra is wide enough for it to go from very pink floyd like prog (octavarium) to sort of mainstream rock (FII), very heavy almost slayer-thrash on ToT. Still though, they make it sound like Dream Theater.
Of course feel free to dislike them all you want :), but It just amazes me how you can say that their sound is boring when their popularity is largely based on their melting-pot attitude and ability to mix so much into their sound.

Don't get me wrong I do like them a lot. I don't much to say as I understand what you're saying, all I will say is the difference between the bands which did switch their sound e.g. Metallica they all switched to mass market models (another example being In Flames).
