Well, I guess freak_'s kinda stupid comment comes from the fact that people outside of Russia have different opinion on Yeltsin and Putin than Russians - out of this two Yeltsin was more of a good guy from our point of view.
We have similiar thing in Poland with Lech Walesa - while for the most of the world he is kind of a hero, for the Poles he isn't that bright figure. We remember him being a terrible president, yet we have much respect for his fight with communism.

Oh, and the whole "witch hunt" is happening on a government level - it's not that every Pole is looking for communists around, nor being happy about actions his government is taking.

Walesa - for many reasons. He did many things wrong but also managed to do many others right. And it can't be forget what he did before as a leader of opposition in communism times. Katchinski has some obsessions, lacks any charisma and his foreign policy is a completly failure - it is really hard to find any positive in his presidency so far.

BTW: you might not know that in Poland president doesn't have that much power as it is in Russia, France or USA. Prime minister plays much more important role.

I agree in some way - he is definately not the only one behind those reforms, and it's not that those reforms were done 100% correct, but the political responosobility, both for pros and cons of them, lies mostly on Yeltsin. And most probably, if not him Russia today would still be a communinst country.

USSR was a socialist state. I see nothing wrong with that. Pre Yeltsin, it was still a super-power, I see nothing wrong with that either. I don't understand peoples fascination with using bullshit tags and love for complete destruction of a political system as opposed to reformation.

From information I read here and there it isn't looking very well - the coruption is massive, the government is taking back the control over media and bussines, the civil rights are not respected, horrible things happen in Chechenya... Isn't it true?

No problem. Annual GDP growth somewhere between European and Asian, >6%. Rise to 30 something billion dollars in foreign investment last year.
Virtual destruction of all foreign debt years ahead of schedule, in terms of billions of dollars, don't remember those numbers. Creation of a stabilization fund of about 6 billion dollars, not to mention the freaking fiscal budget surplus. Drop of inflation to a couple percent. I can go on about social projects, telecom, educational, medial reforms. Stability.

In case of corruption - looks for me that what's your government is doing now is not a fight with it but an attempt to get something from it - everything is OK as long as you give us some money and don't criticize what we're doing. Also, the "fight" with corruption isn't a reason enough for nationalization of private bussines.

they are. and they are just consequences of stability. yes, Putin supplied the country with it. but this sort of stability is like 'India was in a war for 20 years, and after a 7 years of peace there's a 30% growth, WOW!". it's not an economical, social or any kind of growth. it a growth when foreign companies felt that they can earn huge money selling Tampax and Coca-cola at poor russian market. this growth does not characterise any actions of politicians/leaders of the country (exept any offence actions), more like their inactivity.

ORLY? and waht about 40% of capital's citizens earn lower 500$ a month? the poverty is huge even in Moscow and the layer of ppl you are talking about is about 0,5-1% of _capital_ citizens.
