lets say the fov is horizontal, does that mean the vertical fov depends on the resolution ratio (example 4:3)? if the fov ratio is essentially a square (1:1), does that mean you have a squashed vertical view on most resolutions(4:3)? example, fov 90 (horizontal) would mean a vertical fov of 67.5 with a 4:3 ratio, 120 would mean a vertical fov of 90.
it's horizontal. messed around with fov and resolution ratio does effect vertical fov. example, fov 120 on a 4:3 resolution e.g. 800x600 gives you a vertical fov of 90. on a 1.25:1 resolution e.g. 1280x1024, the vertical fov becomes 96. on a widescreen 16:9 resolution, the vertical fov is 67.5.
this may explain why people prefer higher fov's from the default, because the vertical fov is so low at the default 90. anything over 90 how ever creates a fish eye effect causing a bit of a dilemma when selecting fov. well maybe not, food for thought though.
is 90 fov even competitive on games like qw, cpma or warsow as so many players use above 90?
i prefer a fov less than 100, because it slows the game down IMO. my main game is/was UT2k4, and i found its 100% easier to duel with a lower fov as movement isnt THAT important. it makes aiming easier and hitting combos pretty much a given. however i play CTF with my fov at 107. i prefer the fish eye effect and i like to see more of whats going on. i seem to do better when things are "faster" in ctf than i do with a lower fov (which like i said, seems to slow things down). i can also move better with a higher fov and movement (especially the xloc) is pretty important in CTF.
fish eye on the horizontal, not the vertical. you would need over 120 fov for fish eye effect to occur vertically. that's why i thought it might explain why people favour the fov's they do. 105 is the most balanced you see.
horizontally obviously, because when you do widescreen resolutions, you need to get the fov up by like ~15-20% (from 4:3 to 16:9) to get the same "fov 90" feel.
apart from that, fov is field of view, so makes sense that it's horizontally, rather than vertically.
