A mate was showing me Halo 3 beta yesterday. I couldn't be bothered to explain to him about how awful the game is compared to competative deathmatch. He just see's quake as another run around collecting weapons and shooting anyone in sight. Anyway, it kinda sucks playing it when you compare it to quake, other than that it's a bit of fun. I still prefer Gears. Speaking of which, you got any better at that lately?

Why does there have to be prize money involved - isn't only "decent competitions" enough?

the next big game doesnt exist and wont till game makers wake up and realise they arent even getting close to the bar quake 3 and counterstrike set 7 years ago.(including id)

sure shiney gfx and "realworld" physics are all cool at first....but after you play a while and notice thats all those games have going for them the novelty wears off really fast, and gets boring to the point you dont play it anymore or your stomache turns when you see the packaging.

look at what happened to quake 4....they tried to use "realworld" physics in that game and nbody played it till they made it more arcade ..which is the way quake games are supposed to be in the first place. sure there are some that keep saying "q4 pwntzorz q3 nubsauce" but look what game more people are playing...still...

the next big game is still the same old game(s)...quake 3 and counterstrike.

It will be killed by various communities during the first quarter after its release. Just like all any and all FPS games for at least the last decade (CS:GO managed to recover somehow).

It's a no win situation for game developers. If the new game is not a direct clone (plays exactly the same) as Quake or UT from the late 90's, the communities will kill it (bla bla bla, it sucks because it doesn't have ... whatever).
If it is a direct clone the whine will be centred on the "why is this a clone, why not do something new" ... "I might as well play my old favourite."

I think that the only thing needed is to allow weak players to play against each other and slowly improve.
As long as the initial influx of new players is large (which it will be because it's blizzard) the game will captivate a large audience, because it is a playable FPS. (assuming that they have matchmaking figured out)

CS:GO is partially playable because sometimes both teams have equally many noobs on there.

QL is not playable because noobs get destroyed / flamed at / kicked.

You don't want to capture the people that already play FPS... You want to get those who don't.

FPS is dead, there is no going back, there will be nothing in the future for it.

FPS ended after Q3 in 1999. Any FPS game after Q3 falls into one of two categories:

1. A somewhat popular but horrible mockery of FPS, usually in the form of the military shooter or hybrid FPS with RPG/MMORPG elements.

2. A decent arena FPS game which incorporates the gameplay depth from the great FPS games before them, but only has a handful of players and very few, if any, tournaments with prizes (with low prize money).

I have given up any hope of a revival.

Arena FPS are dead and got stagnant in 1999 yes, but the FPS genre in general remains to be one of the biggest genres today, in both videogames in general and in e-sports.

For example in CS:GO every single major tournament of the year has to the very least a prize pool of one million dollars, and Overwatch and even the latest Halo and Call Of Duty's are way more innovative and original than the latest Arena FPS games, that only resort to copying Quake 1, 2 and 3 and calling it 'old school' or '90's shooter'.

Innovative? I don't see how they are innovative.

I played a few hours of Call of Duty AW which was supposed to be 'arena-like' with the jet packs and dashes,etc. It was faster than the previous games in the series, I'll give it that. It allowed for slightly more freedom of movement and 'innovative' (in direct comparison only to modern FPS, because you could do all this and more in 1996) gameplay, however it was still slower than Quake, more restrictive, less freedom to dodge and out maneavour, no item control, no advanced concepts for project/hitscan aiming.

Take away all of the items in Quake, give the player 2 guns to choose from, allow players to get more powerful with leveling up your character (aka grinding for hours and hours of boring repetetive gameplay), reduce the map pool by about 80%, reduce the variety of game modes, remove the advanced movement and slow it down by about 50%, and there's your modern FPS.

The only reason I can think of that you used the term 'innovative' in relation to modern FPS is that you aren't using it in the way its definition was indended for it to be used.

New arena games today are just copying the games of old, you are right on that count. But even a game like reflex, which is essentially Q3 with better graphics and CPM movement is still far more innovative than any modern FPS that you will see today in terms of the core game itself. If you remove all the bells and whistles from modern FPS games that go with it (e.g. BF4 stats, unlocks, leveling up, item packs, etc etc etc), get rid of all the matchmaking and the rankings and the constant DLC aka (next thing to look forward to to keep you playing just that little bit longer, don't want the people to get bored with the dry gameplay) - and what do you have left?

This is what I imagine modern publishers think today: "We need to get as many people playing our game as possible, for as long as possible. We need to keep them playing and buying more stuff."

And in comparison, idsoftware in the 1990's: "We need to make a great game."

no, they will play on pc, id would never release a full sdk for console, they would break copyright laws if you were able to build the xbox and ps4 builds

use your imagination if you have the alpha, besides unlocking a few more weapons to carry, its not hard to make it good for tournies

and its all like, the mouse aint serverside in quake 4, doom 4 will have it planted for someone to work out, and add proper mouse strafing to it

weapons aint too hard, had to recode nearly all the weapon and ammo code to add alternative fire in Q43A

the render and engine code will be all different, the game dll, will be like quakewars with external c scripts

Currently playing Halo Master Chief edition with a friend that has a xbox one, it has the frist 4 Halos. We are about in the middle of Halo:CE SP campaing, what a game! Playability is awesome, 1080p, HD textures, constant 60fps. Ofc i gifted him a Maxshooter One (so you can hook mouse and keyboard and play like on a PC). And last but not least, were on legendary difficulty, we have at least 6 months of fun ahead with just 50 bucks invested in the game, great deal!
