Traditional dm, with its item control aspects, causes its players to develop the mentality of 'keep the rich rich, the poor poor'. You can see how prevalent this is, and damaging, by looking at the progression of dm changes within the various quakes.

The more this mentality caused changes along these lines, the fewer players there were. Eventually, it reached the stage where no new players stuck around; like babies who died before they could protect themselves. Most of the players were happy about this, especially when money became a factor. But, now we see how traditional DM is almost dead. It only still survives 'happily' in communities where this mentality has not had a chance to develop and manifest itself.

In the short-term, this mentality may have 'kept the rich rich'. But in the long-term, it has proven to be suicide.

P.S.: Don't listen to people who tell you to 'live like there's no tomorrow'. This is a potentially dangerous and damaging philosophy. Unless there is good reason (like you're 200 years old), the probability there will be no tomorrow is extremely low.

Well, how do you propose that DM should be?

The fact is, you can look at the game in different ways. Some people view the game through poker parallels, or martial arts. Others may view the negative side, which could look like slavery or class-warfare. While any view could well be truthful, certain views produce better 'results'.

Objectively you could argue to remove the negative sides while keeping the positives.

I know what u mean man. It's hard to get people to show you how to play a game when there's this elite already at the the top reaping the rewards. And why should they help you? They're making the money with their circle jumps and stupidly good configs. But on the other hand and at the end of the day, quake's an fps like any other. You move, you predict, you shoot. Little bit of luck now and again, but you are the one controlling your game and if you can't cut it, it does get a bit annoying. It's a game you want to be good at, but you aren't gonna get anywhere without groupying up to some pro in IRC..which is the real shame.

I think the solution could be very simple. As a developer I would only allow to release a game which is complete and is playable, almost without bugs and has a lot of attractive maps to play. It should be well promoted so it would attract all the COD-like players. You know what hints I am dropping - YES alphaQuake4, which is imo STILL much worse game than Q3.
