like tB0ne says, they've gone commercial. When you start hearing clean vocals/singing, jump-the-fuck-up riffage (see Limp Bizkit, Korn) and break-downs from a great melodic death metal band, you know something is wrong.

But it's no biggie, it happens all the time in metal. Bands that are working too hard and still not gaining any ground on billboards will do all sorts of gay shit to sell more records.

Here are some of my top melo-death albums:

Well In Flames was really not about all growls and droney blast beats or one-note bass lines. They actually had a very unique and extremely melodic sound to them before they soured.

In fact, if anything, they've dumbed down their music to the style that was overwhelming pop rock in the US several years ago.

It really is clear, listening from Clayman to Reroute to Remain, that the band totally lost focus on their diehard fans (who appreciated the band for the melodic, but heavy sensibilities) and are pushing for a much more mainstream, generic metal boarding on pop-rock.

Andres Fridén's vocals are a clear indication at which demographic he's trying to reach. He went from brutal metal vocals with balls to a kind of emo//whine sound and some of his harmonized singing vocals for the new albums chorus' are completely unbearable to me. It makes me think I'm listening to this guy whine about his girlfriend breaking up with him and now he's going to spend the rest of the day at the mall crying about her while he shops at the Old Navy.

Whereas, from The Jester Race, on the song "Behind Spaces" (which happens to be featured in Power of Speed ;-) ) his vocals sound in range of the godly Tomas Lindberg (of At The Gates fame) and he makes me just want to push mosh the shit out of people.

It's all a matter of taste. So if the new In Flames is your thing, then so be it, I suppose. :-\

just because a singer is a growler mainly it doesnt mean he always have to growl. i never hear in flames on the radio, do you? that's a indication that it's not that main stream that you think, it's just that most of the metal fags just has to be underground. just like some stupid rap fans that can't listen to anything that's on the radio. same goes with "INDIE" people, as kent went on the radio some people just wouldn't listen to it.

the old in flames is just like any other shit death metal band (children of bodom for example).. i guess there's not much of it where you come from but i see it everywhere here and i'm getting tired of it. also i can't see the problem with reaching out to a bigger crowd? OH YEAH I FORGOT IT HAS TO BE UNDERGROUND TO BE COOL.

I'm not saying that because they were underground and suddenly started getting popular that they lost their coolness. There really is, in my opinion, a major difference in old-In Flames (pre Reroute to Remain) and new-In Flames. Regardless, your taste is your taste and I respect that.

I'm not saying In Flames is the greatest band. They're not. And when I say old In Flames, I mean the time before Reroute to Remain. Reroute to Remain represents, to me at least, a sudden change in the way In Flames sounds.

i don't think nevermore are 'amazing', not sure about bad ass. It's not about 'droped d' per set, it's the change in style that is abrupt for the new opeth album and I'm pretty disappointed in the album. Anyway, as for in flames, I like lunar strain the most, but as opposed to the prevalent opinion i think Come Clarity is a good *popy* album and I listen to it when I feel like listen to conceptually different music. I guess the point is about how you can change and a lot of bands want to change the really "PERFECT" formula and come up something worse and the only way left is to work on that formula until you get something "good enough". That's not really a bad idea either, there are only so many riffs and darker growls a band can produce before getting tired of 'same old' and it's not like the old record suddenly disappear.

True about Opeth. Ghost Reveries was fairly disappointing.
