Probably because they didn't? Or maybe even, and this is a stretch, you would think about the most recent time when Russian standard of living sunk and most people died or left Russia, the years of the awesome spread of democracy before asking something like that.

I do have a very different opinion about that and I highly doubt will share it but I'll post it anyways :)

The way see it is that a country people who are used to communism take a long time until they finally benefit from democracy.

My reasoning is that under Communism there are very strict rules and it quite difficult to significantly improve one's situation.
so people learned to take advantages for themselves even if they are illegal whenever safely possible.
On the other hand they also learned that the state will take care of you and you don't have to put a lot of effort in.

Now when they are confronted with a democratic system they have many more freedoms, but they are still used to the "take every benefit" idea. Which in turn makes people who try to find every loophole get most of the benefits.
On the other hand people who still want the state to take care of them get poorer, because they don't show enough effort.


But in the end after tim of accustoming people get more used to the freedoms on democracy, the police and justicial system gets better at finding loopholes and the majority of people benefit.

On the other hand what did heppen in the sectors is that, the three western sectors were combined.
In the west the winners helped get the economy back in shape in hope that the mistakes of the aftermath of WWI were not repeated. Thus helping the "Wirtschaftswunder" to happen.
In the east many factories were dismanteled and moved to other countries a reparitions, which caused the eastern German industry to fall way behind their western neighbours.

Until 1949 both west and east Germany could make their constitutions, both were probably heavily influenced by they respective countries though. However while the votes in western Germany were free from that time on, in eastern Germany always the same paty won with more than 90% of the votes. While that in itself obviously doesn't prove any Russian involvement something else does.

It was't the Amercians or British, or the west German government or even the east German government who decided to bring dow the wall which seperated countrymen and families but that decision was made in Moscow.

I think so. Take for example that French and UK already had a non-aggression pact with Germany by the time USSR signed one in 39. In June 1941 Truman said "If Germans will be winning, we'll help Russians. If, on the contrary, Russians, we'll help Germans, and let them kill as many of each other as possible" (New York Times). In October of 1942 while Russia was counter-attacking at Stalingrad, Churchill said "We have to stop these barbarians as far as possible to the East". I also don't think he thought of Stalin frightning geopolitically, UK strategists predicted Russia to lose to Germany within 8 weeks.

Stalins repressions are most similar to the Catholic repressions of protestants in early Europe. The difference between forcing political opposition into retirement and into a prison colony is that of the countries social, economic and infrastructural development, and at that time Russia was quite a messed up barely agrarian wreck.

I'm not really sure if anyone was scared of the Russian people. I know what you're "trying" to say, but you fail. If a political system is undesirable, that doesn't mean its people can't live somewhat normal lives.

America is in a bad way now, but, compared to many other countries, it's still quite a pleasant place to live in. That doesn't mean we (and others) don't want to get rid of our current state of affairs. That doesn't mean we AREN'T trying to "install democracy" all over the world and police the world, because we certainly are. And it certainly doesn't mean that, just because our people have relatively good lives, we shouldn't make efforts to stop this 'freedom spreading.'

In principle I agree, especially about what is now being "spread". But I also think you fail to see what is really desirable to make peoples lives good. Of course were not really having a clear basis defined here, so maybe it's 'which desires are possible and how they effect other people'. Anyway, all these things are too personal.

lol since im from one of CIS countries(ex USSR) i have to add my 2 cents, Communism wasnt so bad, it had its advantages and disadvantages. It mostly benefited the undeveloped and poor which is most of USSR with free education and health care but the economy part just sucked. Economic reforms began to late to save USSR.

Comparing KGB to other security organizations they were probably the best.

Imagine Russia without communism, would be a definition of exploitation. Before the revolution Russians were the most exploited people and most of the industry, close to 90%, was owned by foreigners
