Originally I went onto the overclockers.co.uk as I like their layout and they're always upto date with the latest stuff, then from there I go to dabs and scan as they're always cheaper and they offer a good compromise between price and peace of mind which I think is important when spending 100's of pounds.

In this case scan were a few quid cheaper (168 vs 173) than dabs so I used them.

im going for the e6850, i have no need for quad core

everyone seems to be clocking these 2.66's (dual and quad) to like 3.5-3.9ghz with no probs.

A serious question tho, what is best to buy to be future proof,
E6850 or a Q6600/6700 the QX are way to expensive, I'm about to buy something now, and so far the dual core E6850 seems more simpatic to me.

On a side note, my mobo supports the upcomming 45nm intel cpus too, so I guess I will be able to upgrade at that time.

Yeah, well jokes aside, I really don't intend or wish to buy another processor if I don't really need to, so I need to find a good proc that will last me at least 3 years.

However the Quad seems to be out of place right now, as there is virtually next to zero benefit of having it (altho the Q6600 is cheaper as the E6850), almost no applications take use of 2 cores let alone 4, but with my luck.... BAM, when I'll buy a dual core, in the next 5 months everyone will start supporting quad core cpus and that will get me pissed :)


EDIT: I also noticed some reports that there is a bad batch of Q6600 going around which get quite hot while others run cool. Well I will have to scan the web a bit more and decide.

Yeah but the difference in price is probably not that much and the processing power of the quad means you're not going to be CPU limited for a good 12-16 months at the very least.

That means the only upgrade you'll need to consider for the next 12-18 months is a new gfx card.
It's true you won't need that power now, but IF I was going to upgrade soon it would have to be the quad core. it's all set then for gaming and everything else you throw at it.

All the big pc games like John Wake (I think) are really gonna' take advantage of Quad Core, that goes for Crysis and UT 3.

If you're going to upgrade CPU over next 4 months and want it future proof, it really has to be quad core becasue by this time next year they'll be as popular as the dual cores are now.

will any games take advantage of this?

ie will it run at the equivelant speed of a c2d 2.4ghz for quake etc.
