You sure it is Linköping? Linköpings universitet have some parts in Norrköping aswell. Think it is 2/3 parts in linköping and 1/3 in norrköping. im from norrköping, but i think linköping is a nicer town overall :- )

It's complete with photos of him at awards ceremonies, reproductions of his bedroom from the ic days, his old computer, an empty coke he drank, a replica of his Rolex and some of his Iron from the gym. :)

alright, ive never been to linköping myself, but i wouldnt really expect too much =) Swedish towns smaller than Malmö are most of the time quite empty :D But hope you enjoy it anyway!

I've been to linköping once. I had friends there (they moved away after high school) and spent a weekend there. it's a cute little town from what I remember, small streets in the inner city with alot of older buildings.

we never did go clubbing or anything like that. we were at a vegan cafe called Elsas and some other place where there were bands playing. never went inside tho.

if you like sports they atleast have a hockey stadium, that's all I know :) their team playes the highest division (or do they nowdays?).

Linköping played Modo in the "elit-serien" (highest division) finals this year (2007) and lost 4-3 in matches, so they are really good :).

I just visited there when I was looking at different universities to scope it out - and I have friends who went there.

There are different places where there are student apartments but I think they are almost the same- you have your small kitchen and basically a one-roomer. The University lies a bit from the city itself so you might want to take a bus or ride a bicycle to the city (riding a bike seemed to be the way most people got around campus and the university). The teachers are really competent, then again, I don't know what classes/courses you'll be talking.

On the sports/gig front, the only information I can give you is that they have a good hockey team in LInköping. I don't know what the night-life is over there, but from what I heard there's usually stuff to do around campus if you don't want to head into town.

Also I don't think fox went there, unless you're talking about another fox - different from "fojji".

Not sure about the renting situation of a bikes over there. They are usually pretty cheap, so you might want to consider buying one at, for example, "biltema" where you can get a bike that works and no-one will want to steal ;)

One question tho, have you ever actually been to Sweden? I mean, watching it from google earth with 40+ in the shade and actually being there, freezing your ass off, are too different things. Hope you have a backup plan, just in case. :)

Nope, I can't speak it - but Sweden is listed as an English speaking country and all my courses are taught in English, I will do my best to learn the language as I go.

And no, there is no back up plan and I realise how much of a shock the weather will be to an Australian, but I wanted to experience something totally different with this trip and my choices reflect that ;)

you'll have problems speaking english in public. learn a few phrases before you go.. most 'older' people have no clue what youre saying so ask your teachers or similar some basic stuff that you can use. i'll help you if you want

It's not an English speaking country, but 99,9% of the swedes can speak English.

And by the way, if you don't look too ugly, you will probably be pretty popular among the ladies. Many Swedish girls love Australian accent.

I'm going to be visiting the Swedish embassy in Australia soon to get some more information regarding possible language barriers I might come up against. I do plan on getting a phrase book soon and practicing a bit with a danish friend of mine who knows some Swedish.

I don't think you will have that much troubles with the language, most people above the age of 12 can speak decent english, it's just a bit rusty for some :)

Linköping is a nice city, I have some friends studying there and they say it's awesome. There's lots of things going on for the students, and most include drinking, so I guess you'll like it :)

I'm going to Linköping because its the recommended uni for students studying the social sciences.

The courses I'm taking are politics / bioethics / globalisation and global ethics.

mid-late january is winter.

the uni @ Linköping is pretty much dominated by the tech-students (LiTH). plenty of beer chugging and stuff. Partys on thursdays called "kravall" (riot) and many students running around in overalls with badges. The campus is pretty nice with many nice green areas outside.

But most importantly you will probably have acces to one of swedens best internet connections (sunet 100/100).. and almost for free. Some computer halls have quake installed, at least on the tech-faculty. (allthough its supposedly forbidden to install games on the pc's. but clever students manage) So, I guess your gonna have a nice time there. The partylife is focuesed around campus and pubs near the student appartments.

1) Heaps of kegs - yes. You are gonna see heaps of kegs
2) Nightlife is ok, some nice pubs in the city and some local swedish bands do gigs on "kravaller" in the student Pubs.
3) Most student appartments is in a corridor with a shared kitchen. So, you will live in a 20 square meter room and share a kitchen with approximately 10 other students.

The city is so and so.. its really flat and not so interesting. Its a great city for students cause you will likely travel about on a push-bike. The winter is not so cold (might go down to -20 celcius in January tho), some snow but mostly slush. The swedish women are great as always. They tend to like exchange students... the exotic flavour, if you know what I mean. The best pickup line is "hej hora, vill du dansa?" Try it out! :P

Congrats, though the smaller cities are extremely boring during the vacations, they tend to have a much broader student life than the larger ones.

Just a warning though, it won't be spring when you arrive, it will be bitterly cold winter, so bring thy fur coat and a fur cap if you have one, preferably a russian style fur cap, which are very hip in Sweden atm. January is generally the coldest month.

Aye, the average temperature in January is subzero, yet the average temperature in July is 15 degrees. Which may sound a bit low, but during the summer the day temperature is usually above 20 in the shade which is just about right :) In June you can usually start going to the beach and continue doing so until the end of August.

During the summer, I wouldn't want to be any place else, Sweden is great then, but the winter, spring and fall tends to be a month or two too long in my opinion :)

Should be fun for you thought, especially if you are used to a different climate, just wait until you are hit by your first blizzard!

The average temperature in January for the past 30 years has been -16° (Kiruna, northern part of Sweden) and 0° (Southern Skåne, the most southern part of Sweden)

Assuming that's in Celsius that's not as bad as I thought. This past January where I live was right around in the -15 to -9 area.
