Never been travelling for that long, but I have done some longer trips and stay abroad in one place (school exchange, internships) too.

First of all one year is a very long time for just moving around. Have you ever spend more than two months with just her and no friends colleagues around? Cause if you haven't you should try that first.

That said you should look into finding some places where you'd like to stay for a longer time and maybe even work in a small job, helps with getting to know people.

know two people had roughly had the same money they did a couple of months work in NZ if I remember correclty. They did everything, didn't hold back and they lasted 2 years.

Asia was dirt cheap
South America was cheap as well

Another guy i work with was backpacking through South America and was kidnapped and held for ransome, they thought he was a rich american but he was a poor australian.. haha anyway they eventually let him go unharmed, I asked him if he ever considered writing a book on his experience and he said "well i was keeping a travel diary at the time do you want to read it?" , of course i jumped at the chance and the next day he brings it in and its this tattered old exercise school book with dirt and peeling corners etc.. was very priveledged experience reading that. anywayz im rambling .

this is very common to do for swedish youths i belive. i've done it myselfe. i saved about 5000 euros and went for a long trip in thailand. thailand and the countries around there is the most common vacationplace for swedes. i hooked up with a friend (from home) down in thailand, and we partied hard, lots of swimming. he went home after a month, so i was on my own. it was still lots of fun and i had many foreigner and thai friends. i went to northern thailand, no beaches there, but a lot of culture.. temples and stuff.
you should buy a one-way ticket to kuala lumpur, then travel up north... malaysia, thailand, cambodia, laos and perhaps china.
im already saving for my next trip, and i will travel in feb something :). i will go to south east asia again. it's cheap, nice people and nice climat.

Make a list of places you'd want to see, pick a nice first destination, buy a plane ticket, bring enough clothes for a 10-11 days. Stay as long as you like there, travel around there, feel a need for something more, consult your list and then head on to next destination, wash, rinse, repeat. Don't bring more than you can carry on your back, buy new things over there when needed, don't bring anything too fancy or expensive along, so you can dump it if it doesn't prove very useful.

Personally I would visit the Caribbean Islands, Kenya, Sinai Desert, Oman, Zanzibar, Zambia, Nepal and other places I am sure I will never see again. If I think I will visit some countries in the future or that I already can sort of experience in my own country I would not put them on my list. imo its about exploring cultures, people, food, environments that I am not used to. If I can shark cage dive here, why would I go to Australia to do it there for instance.

I guess there are many things you have to consider, such as best season, events taking place, what activities you want to do(golfing, wine tours, diving, skiing, river rafting etc.)

it's been really hit and miss. the kiwi's are saying its the most temperamental summer for a good while. but aye, any time i set myself up to do a nice activity the weather always seems to oblige. kaikoura is stunning. really like this place - it's like the bay of islands without all the bullshit.

kaikoura was in the national paper yesterday. the steady population of the town is 3000 .. yet during these summer months over 9000 people have tried to get dolphin swimming/whale watching.. and thats only a few of the activities they offer here. pretty crazy stuff :D
