this year will be worse for European countries, because afaik national organisers have to pay for the winners' trip:( so ammount of slots can be reduced (i am talking about normal ESWC, not Masters :P)

Uhmhm.... so basically this is for countries who have not the national qualis? And what about if someone participates in his national qualis, however doesn't win it, but still want to go... can he then still submit applications or not?

i think this doesnt really have much to do with the main eswc, see it rather as an tourney in its own with its own prize money etc. with the plus that you can also win a spot for the eswc finals. I suppose if the winner of the tourney already has a spot for the finals from the national qualifiers the second one will get it and so on.

I doubt that great players will try to go for this tourney, and especially those who have the spot already guaranteed since I also doubt that there will be big/huge prize money involved. The main award will be of course the ticket(s) for the grand finals, however we still don't know how many spots will be given. Maybe top three will go, maybe top one.

Nonetheless it's a great opportunity for players whose countries don't have national qualis or have just one spot.

and good players always participate if the money is right (and the organizer aint called CPL) =p

It's a great chance to compare your skills with others before the main tournament. I bet there will be a lot of European top players if the money is about $15-20k which I think it will.

Still though the main event is ESWC grand finals, Masters is minor, so I think there (at Masters) will be much less money, I'd say 5k MAX for Q3, divided into 3 first places. I bet that the main prize will be ticket + hotel + flight., then just some cash.

But we'll see and hopefully I'm wrong...

Well, if Multiplay can get $20k for a Quake4 tournament in just few weeks then I don't see why ESWC couldn't. Well, ok, I see why they possibly couldn't, but I mean that it's possible ;) Even if it will be $10k I think a lot of people will be interested. Maybe not Americans, but Europeans...

But since Masters is invite only shouldn't the organisation pay the invited players' transportation fees? Should that be the case, even if the prizemoney is 'low', why would someone not want to come?

I doubt they would pay tickets ;) They don't pay travel costs for CS Female invited teams and from what I heard they're not even willing to pay for av3k's and MYM.cs tickets to the Grand Final this year, as they should since they're reigning champions. I heard they delegated the costs to local ESWC organizers...
