The Guild Wars ladder pages are good examples of player/guild performance over time - might be a good starting point for ladder-type systems. :>

That's a good start for discussion, but it's not quite what i'm looking for. The website i'm imagining in my mind would be built for a FPS game tournament, and not ladder style.

The statistics are nice, but what if you could make them 100x more advanced? :)

I had the misfortune of running an online tournament last year without the help of a tournament website, it was a real mission to keep everything under control. What I would have liked if there already was a tournament tree page where when after each match it automatically updates as players enter their results, perhaps also giving a link to the demo.
From a players side there should be a nice signup form where they have to agree to the tournament rules etc. For the admin, it would be nice to be able to set the groups/tree manually. There should also be a timelimit to be able to submit match results, so you can schedule the whole tournament beforehand. For the players easy navigation to their standings and upcoming matches. If you follow for instance a round/week structure it would be nice if players can select available time slots of when they are able to play. If there needs to be a match referee they can then select an available referee from a list. This way time slots can also be configured to referee availability, where willing referees can enter what times they are available during the week beforehand.

All of this is already in the scope of the current existing systems, at least the ones used in Quakeworld. Check out http://www.nqr.nu/nqr11 to get an idea about what i'm "starting" at and what should be improved upon.

My experience with scheduling games for real is that it doesn't work out too well in a league/tournament where there's nothing but the pride at stake. :\ The functionality should of course be there though to open up the possibility for other people to get aware of upcoming games just by browsing the site.

(Note: The last system i did is not the one used on the NQR website, but it was similar)

Live results of ongoing matches (grab them from irc scorebots or whatever, just make sure they are updated no later than 1 second after the frag happens) on the frontpage (FRONTPAGE, not 8 clicks deep because these will take 30 seconds each to load during the usual playoff traffic jam).

This was interesting and very possible to do it has shown after some intial testing with PHP+Ajax and a direct call for status to the server. I'm not sure how the game servers would feel if there are hundreds of visitors polling those scores though. hmm

Sujoy had plans to go down this route, some kind of tournament system and global database of players, integrated with esreality.

guess he had other plans.
