In Germany, male names are only for high pressure areas. Lows get female names. Don't know how the res tof the world handles it though.

In America, we name them after obesity insults: Fatty, Chunky, Porker and Unreal are common names for hurricanes. :)

They're named in alphabetic order 1 female then 1 male if I recall correctly. e.g. There was Ivan a few years back which is deffo a male name :)

I actually am very active with this currently. There are a great deal of newbies that I will help with config's and give pointers to when I'm in any pub server. I'll also often give them a few points, or even let them win (sometimes takes more work than really playing! :p) just so they have enough fun to come back. Of course if they can't take a loss they're not gonna play ever anyway, but I'm sure there are players that I've given matches to that had possibly never won a match before.
Helping new players, rather than just spawn-raping them, is the only way we can keep this community growing. There is too much of a learning curve compared to ANY game they could be coming from to not help them.

No sir, I did not disconnect on Judge. We played a close match, to which he was all like "wow, bad person to duel with" because of my laggy high-pinging ass +backing a lot.

Fair enough. In exchange, I request that newbs not quit playing and get all down and shit 'cause they always lose to better players. I dunno about the rest of you, but personally, that pisses me the hell off.

I usually prelude my chat with n00bs worse than me who happen to ask for serious advice on improving. And that usually is: "Can you tolerate losing another 100 games?"

They get that idea that they can sometimes "maybe" beat a player better or significantly better than them because they can do it in other games they've played like Warcraft III, or Call of Duty or Counter-Strike anything with enough randomness in it to create a greater degree of uncertainty.

In Quake, Starcraft or Go for that matter you're probably never going to beat someone who's currently at a much higher level of skill than you. Unless the weaker player played his/her best game yet and the experienced player was half asleep, didn't care at all, made a crucial error or was just letting the other person win.

That's what happens in well designed games of skill. Imagine that?

Being friendly and giving advice to new players is one thing. Having to babysit them and play boring onesided games (or deliberately lose) is just not fun for me. I think everyone should play against people of equal or slightly better skill and move up when they get good enough. Sure you can get tutored by fox but will that make you a tdm god? Hardly. Only thing I can see to make it happen is a decent ranking/matchmaking system. Then when/if you reach the level to play someone good it just might be fun for both of you.

I have been learning to play Go on the KGS Go server. Skill matching helps so much in speeding up the learning process. I started out taking their general tutorial which was REALLY good.
Then from there I've just been playing games, my first few weren't the best since I didn't have a rank and the system didn't know my skill yet. Now with my rank starting to be determined I have lots of fun and most of my games are close and challenging for both players.
I also can notice my skill getting a little better each day.

This is what DM needs, since it's just too skillful of a game to pick up and play as a total beginner in public servers. There are alot of skills required to know before the game becomes it's funnest. But there is no system like a tutorial to teach them these beginning skills. And no matching system to put new players up against other total beginners when they start either.

One other advantage that GO has is games can be handicapped by adding more starting stones for the worse ranked player. This helps make faster matches since I can have a good game with anyone within +/- 6 levels of my rank. DM FPS might accomplish this by giving the worse player a slight health multiplier. So for example an 80 damage rail only does 60 when the worse player is getting a 25% permanent shield for a handicap. This of course would not be used for more even games which are preferable to have.

Very very true. There's so many ppl (including a good many esr ppl) that see nothing wrong with constant spawn-rape, and think that someone disconnecting out of constant spawn-rape is just a sore loser. And maybe so, but they're not admitting what it's really about, because spawn rape teaches nothing but how to get spawn raped. They'll often pretend or tell others something along the lines of "that's how you learn" but that's pretty much just ego-inflation.

Someone whos played DM long enough to know that spawn rape is part of the game gets less angry and usually doesn't disconnect or cry about it. BUT it's still not very fun. In fact spawn rape isn't really fun for either player when it's not a comeback and the skill levels are imbalanced . And the main point of games is to be fun and challenging. To that end, Quake needs a resign button : ) so players can bail on a game gone sour they've decided to stop trying in.

to help and who like to give them the informations they recived some
years ago in the past.

I only can invite every inexperienced Quake 3 player who is trying
to play CPM but don't get it to #cpma.na . We are hosting newbie
cups for people out there to give them the chance to play vs
their level and not in a OpenCup vs high skilled. Sure there can be a person
who is like "whaha now I fake nick and own beginners", sure this
can happen everytime, but we (me inculded) are trying to do the
best to give the newbies the best.

Also we can teach you the movement, give you a tricks tutorials and
also a small 1v1 practise + introduce on each 1v1 map which is played in the Cups.

Also i'd like to say that there is again a newbie cup planned, so if you would like to participate
come in #cpma.na @ Quakenet and wait
for more informations in the future.

I actually disagree in a way. Bit of both. I think the balance is right cos that level of rudenessi s almost intriguing at least to me.

There are plenty of games out there which cater for "noobies".
It takes a certain type of person to become a quaker and that person certainly would not be put off by so and so being rude or unhelpful. They have to have the grit to go on and look past that.

Even the lamest of people are helpful at some point, but Quake is a tough love game cos it's basically the highest skill game of its type so there is no room for people who want their asses wiped. You learn the basics and you get your ass kicked for years and years until you reach a certain level that you're happy with and even then a pro will make you look crap, but the upside is there's less than 100 people in the world who can pull any serious score on you.

It might sound like tough love but the only reason quake is where it is is not becasue of its vast numbers, rather becasue of the concentration of the players.

So yeah help players, but I think quake is always going to be a small community of elitists because it is the most challenging FPS, that is why ESWC use it ETC.

I don't hate noobies, but I think you can only help someone so far then if they are the right person for the game then they'll take care of themselves.

tons and tons of experience is the only way to learn to play q3. tutorials are a big lol.

I think the one hardest thing about being a noobie is dealing with frustration, if someone can have patience enough to get through frustration without going through more than 3-5 mice on the way. They have incredible discipline, me im to about 13-14 mice destroyed by my right hand, and maybe a couple keyboards.

wtf is xerp exactly anyways, i have no idea what that cmd does. And that mod has the game strung up so tight that IMO it doesn't even feel like q3 anymore. Ultrono Arena is a better altenative.
