so basically for people who don't want to read the whole thing:
if someone types some suspicious text (used in cheat programs) in IRC or if you have any other program running that has that string in memory (be it browser, msn, notepad etc.).. you get banned by PB (cause it scans your physical memory as well -> spyware)

"So everyone who types three specific words in sequence is now creating a cheat, and everyone receiving the text is using it." :D

..and the company behind PB, Evenbalance, tries to get away with it posting the most idiotic statement since the CPL denying they're shutting down.

Typical tabloid headline, PB wasn't exactly hacked but cheat coders decided to abuse the PB string detection by exposing it to the public.

I'm surprised it took them this long to discover it, since they claim to be the best cheat makers :)
I believe anti virus programs use the same system to detect potential viruses, although not necessarily in a form of a string, but searching for patterns nonetheless.

You can get kicked/banned for violation if you have a certain cvar violation in your config (let's say downloaded from somewhere), not really a news. OSP used something similar for button5 detection, can't remember if it was removed later on or not CBA to try.


PB was never a good anti-cheat, but it is the only tool that provides guids and PB screenshots for most games which also helps leagues ban cheaters. Without an IP match or guid for evidence, you can't ban anyone. ClanBase probably has about 20 000 CoD4 players and if we were to drop PB support, it would destroy the scene.


I just hope this forum post/news wont do to Q3 what crossfire did to ET by exposing nC to the public :/

this isnt the first time nC has featured on esr... there was a news post when users were exposed a while back

That is somewhat of a problem, more publicity these guys are getting more "customers" are interested in their products.

To many cheats for that sadly or more to the point to many people who cry like babies and can't bare to be beaten fairly and squarely so they cheat and ruin it for everyone else.

It seems they either go that route or claim anyone that beats them MUST be a cheater.

I lost my trust in people when i was disappointed by the same person twice in CB TDM OpenCup (in Q3 case of course).

Punkbuster is fucked up (again) - Warning!

Cause using word "hacked" may lead to conclusion that innocent PB developers was caught with their pants off by some evil programmer from outside. And in reality it's PB developers who are solely responsible for every single problem with this crappy software.

How do you uninstall pb (q3), beyond disabling the services to start at startup?

I think you can just end the process sin the taskmanager and remove everything that starts with pnk from system32.

If you feeling lucky cou can also remove the complete system32 folder, solves lots of things!
