One of Turkey's best-known novelists faces three years in jail for making controversial comments on his country's killing of Armenians and Kurds.
A person who, being a Turk, explicitly insults the Republic or Turkish Grand National Assembly, shall be punishable by imprisonment of between six months to three years."
I agree that people have an innate sense of justice, but doesn't that also appliy if someone publishes a book saying that your ancestors were never murdered?
Also if people are set to start uprisings or something similar because they cannot publish their opinions, why would they not do it if they can voice it but everybody keeps disagreeing and calling them idiots?
and innate justice would be "well, since everyone can say what they want i guess i need to cope with being insulted every now and then"
They can do it either way. What you should be afraid of is people who loooook clean and lawful, manage to get in control and slowly start manipulating from the top. The point is then that they should be, and people should have a sense of free speech so strong, that it would be impossible for them to impose any restrictions on what kind of critique you can launch at them.
