I was wondering if people could tell me what they think of lasermice. Why do people think they suck? Did they have one? (if so, which?) Is it because everyone says they are shit?
I personally hate laser mice because I use to use really low sensitivity.
The worst mouse sensor performance issue you can encounter in FPS gaming is malfunctioning from fast movement. It's worse than not having enough CPI and skipping pixels, it's worse than negative acceleration, it's worse than a bit of cursor jitter or a high lift-off distance.
The reason why it is bad is that you can not adapt to high speed malfunctioning because you can't predict when it will happen and when it does happen it completely disrupts whatever action you were trying to execute, to add insult to injury the times where you must move the mouse the fastest tend to be times where you are under threat from opponents and can least afford to have your mouse stop tracking or flip to the floor.
Laser mice are overwhelmingly more likely to skip than modern LED optical mice are. Since their advantage of higher CPI doesn't make up for the shortcomings of skipping or risk of skipping, lasers suck for many of middle and lower sensitivity players who may make fast movements. They also cost more. If you don't make fast mouse movements and you wont be devastated if you ever lose a game because your mouse flipped out at the wrong moment it's probably fine to use a laser mouse that you like.
If you use a low sensitivity, then yes, that's exactly why people hate laser mice. However, if you use a medium sensitivity like me (22.5cm/360) then laser mice should still be fine for you. I've never skipped my g3 or my g9 on my allsop raindrop xl.
Ok, so you're playing UT3 with a sensitivity of 14cm/360 @ 800 dpi (or cpi if you prefer). Good for you.
I don't know why people argue over cpi vs. dpi. In my opinion they're the same damn thing because I know what they're talking about because there's no real fundamental difference.
