i think im having the same problem, just recently it started, whenever i play i feel like stuttering when i move the mouse but fps doesnt really drop, sometimes like from 125 to 120-116, its really annoying

Ironically, Q4 feels now much more smooth than Q3.

Don't know what is wrong, all usual suspects were checked just to find out that everything is fine.

What mod are you playing and are you using cnq3 for cpma?

I remember I had this very problem just after I have reinstalled XP. It seems it has got to do with PB update. Just let it update, the time it takes vary, but I guess there is no way to help it. But it will go away after a while. As far as I can remember it can take a few hours of gameplay :-/

To avoid this in the future, make a copy of your PB folder before you reinstall windows. Then after you install the game again, just paste the old PB into your Quake 3 directory.

That should fix it.

If it's not PB, then ignore everything above this line lol.

i notice this to, i used cnq3 and get lag like every 5 minutes, it stopes if i minimize and maximasize it back :X

update the gfx/chipset drivers to the latest version, reset all settings to id default from the menu and start over, try diff clients cnq, ioquake

Standard stuff, XP SP2, latest Forceware drivers. Might try ioquake, CNQ3 didnt help :(

ironically some people have been getting more stable fps by using older nvidia drivers (myself included)

it's foolish recommending the latest nvidia drivers with q3!

i for one, having upgraded a couple of months ago, now get the level box structure lines visible. it's especially striking on such maps as q3wcp23 and all those where the sky is blue:)

Do you have a dual core CPU?

If so, after you run Q3, minimize it, go to Task Manager---> Process, right click on quake3.exe, set affinity, uncheck one of the CPU's. This might help.

I have constant-ish drops to around 120-124 fps. Really annoying and making me hit walls, and miss flicks...

ive noticed sometimes having firefox open can cause some kind of unfluid fps.

are u using a dualcore cpu? I had stutter problems in q3 when I played offline tho. using imagecfg.exe to fix the affinity to use only 1 core helped.

I have had this problem since CPMA 1.43 It is a problem with CPMA, despite the developers claiming that it's the "driver writers' fault" or something to that effect.

I did not have this problem in CPMA 1.41, and I can confirm by reverting back to CPMA 1.41 with no issues. I did not change my video drivers. The FPS drop you speak of that's "only from 120-116" is not so marginal. That is an average over a second. Realistically, the drop is clearly significantly lower than that, because my system basically freezes/stutters for a few milliseconds.

I have reproduced this on a fresh install of Ubuntu Hardy Heron, 2.6.24 kernel, latest X.Org, latest ATI drivers. I do not have this problem in any other game than Quake 3, and I do not have this problem in baseq3. I do not have multiple processors. I do not have anything running in the background except for a shitload of gnome processes that Ubuntu thinks are necessary but really aren't. This problem is reproducible on Windows 2000 with only 15 running processes (all system stuff).

Yes it is CPMA and with version 1.46 mouse input lag has been added!

I miss rocketjumps cos the mouseinput is not recognized in the correct way.
and ingame it feels like using 125hz polling, but im using 500hz constantly!

didnt really read your answers. but i had this 1-3 years ago. it was something with SP2.
I reinstalled my PC alot of times just cuz of this. and i didnt have this lag when it was new-installed, but after just the 2nd windowsupdate install i got it back.

even the sound lags a little when this happends?

Dont remember the name of it, but when i didnt install this it works perfectly fine!

Ye the FPS drops for like a second so if I'm aiming it's like it's paused for a very short time and I end up over shooting. It's very consistant too, I've tried everything (including the multi-core affinity stuff). Turned off all apps etc. It seems to happen less just after I reboot. And seems to not happen at all if I close alot of processes after reboot. My system specs shouldnt be an issue: E6750 - 2.66 Dual Core / 4 Gb RAM / 8800 GTS / Windows XP SP2

This only started to happen after a recent install - I haven't really changed much (except for some drivers afaik).

but, my win xp cd has sp2. you could try some other win xp cd. and ye, ofc. when you install OS, no TP-cable plugged in. and stuf like that.

The lag will be gone but there are some other settings in the video driver and some other things that effects your sensitivity and "gameplay" but i am testing now and cant tell anything for sure... also i am tech newbie so its harder to fined out.

P.S. In view tab it must be set to advanced in order to see that settings...

xfire makes my q3 lag.

Wow wish i read this thread yesterday to try some of this out. Q3 been unplayable for me for last 2 weeks as gone from a steady 125 fps to dropping to 80 when moving about, mouse feels well choppy etc.

Thats on 8800GTX, Q6600, 4 gig and vista x64. Was fine for a long time then suddenly got rubbish. Ended up formatting it last night and now the game is running okay again.

Well i spoke too soon, just joined a server and have 80 fps again. Plus its constantly asking for my damned q3 cd key, no matter how many times i put it in lol.

Maxbrowse also wont launch prolly due to cnq3, they dont make it easy these days :/

Well turns out its xfire, got rid of it and joined server thru ingame browser and its 125 solid, xfire used to be fine no idea why its gotten so screwed up.

Also as i cant use that, ASE dead, and maxbrowse doesnt let me join any game with cncq3, wtf can i use for a server browser?

try qtracker for a server browser (www.qtracker.com)...i switched from xfire due to the FPS drop and i like it...
