I don't want to be a pro gamer. I just was saying, is it POSSIBLE if I practiced enough? I've been playing games my whole life, and the greatest gaming feat I have done is beating metal gear solid 2 on extreme two times. After dying literally about 600 times.

I'm not a progamer, and i do not aspire to be. But I would advice anyone against trying to become one for financial reasons.
The possibility for you to become one of the best I'd honestly say to be pretty slim (no offence, I do not know you). If you look at the people who are the best in the quake games, most of them have been pretty decent right off the bat, learning pretty quickly, etc. What they ALL has had in common as well, Is time to play massive ammounts of hours. Even mr non-practice himself "Prozac" has spent entire summers just playing.
Obviously, some people learn faster than others though, and its highly probable that guys like Fatal1ty and prozac, for some reason, learn things in these games faster than you and me.

After completing MGS2 on extreme you're pro. that fucking vamp is really a bitch, easily the hardest part in the game. I've beaten it once on extreme and I probably won't try again :)

I'd have to say that the hardest MGS2 boss on extreme would have to be either the metal gear battles or solidus snake. I took down vamp pretty quickly. And I beat olga without taking any damage.

nah, I had no problems with either metal gear or solidus. My biggest problem was to aim for vamp since he's really fast at extreme. Or maybe I just did it the wrong way :D
Was some years ago I completed the game, awesome memories!

Vamp was easy, I just kept throwing or launching grenades into the water with the grenade launcher every time he went into the water. I planted claymore mines where I thought he was going to step, I shot down his knives with the AK or M4. and I immediately jumped out of the way every time he tried slashing me with the knife. I repeated this process until he went down. The Metal Gear and Solidus fights were much more unpredicable. Especially their movements and attacks. Which is why I find them to be the most difficult of the game.

its definitely not a born talent, whereas with physical sports it can be, eg body type built for the sport.

Its all practice practice practice, younger you start the bigger advantage you will have, because the younger you are the more your brain and body develops around that practice. Child aqusition!

Why would the ability to physically move a mouse and keyboard with precision not be a talent you are born with? That seems rather foolish to exclude gaming from physical talents such as athletic sports. It might not require the same overall physique, but I would argue that most of the best quake players are in relatively good shape with a sound head on their shoulders.

With any game you have to learn the rules and certain tricks over time (strat and timing). But you can certainly be born with an affinity for hand-eye coordination.

I agree you can be born with better hand and eye co-ordination then some people, and with a higher intelligence for learning, but thats about it. Most of the skills from gaming come from the individuals IQ and hardwork, nurture over born ability.

Whereas with real sports (example bodytypes), etomorph frames - tall people generally end up being better basket ball players or endurance atheletes, mesomorph type frames end of being better boxers, bodybuilders, rugby players etc endurance and strength and endomorph frames, end up being better power lifters etc short brute power.

I'm no professional gamer myself, but I spent years 'practicing' and it wasn't until I took a long hard look at who I was, really became honest with myself that I realized I had a terrible attitude when it came to how I viewed myself worth and abilities. The idea that some people are just 'born with it' is a common misconception that a lot of people have. Talent helps, but its 90 percent hard work. It goes beyond simply practicing the game you love, you have also train your mind to become a consistent competitor. Like I said I'm nowhere near pro, but I didn't start enjoying success online (and in tournaments) until I worked on my MENTAL STRENGTH, in the end it had nothing to do with the game, and everything to do with attitude, and confidence. Before I realized this, I never had a girlfriend, couldn't talk to women, it was pathetic, now, I'm engaged to be married and I couldn't be happier. The first step is believing in yourself man, those negative statements are the first thing you have to rid from your mind. Good Luck :)

Given my current state of violent mental instability and diagnosed momentary psychotic episodes where I choke my mother because I either lost playing a game or thought about something painful over and over and over and over again until I snapped. I don't think that I will ever be playing video games, (especially FPS games) online competitively anymore. The slightest thing could set me off. It's a decision that I've made for myself and also as my Psychiatrist advised.

I am in no position to be doing something that could frustrate me. I can't control myself. I could hurt or possibly kill someone. I just take my meds and do what the doctor says.

I am not a troll. I am just stating the facts, and explaining how gaming is not good for me. Even if I could become a professsional gamer, i wouldn't go to any competitions or take it seriously. I simply don't believe in my self at all.

I think you need to exercise your brain a bit. Brain and reflexes are the most important think for this kind of games. We tend to be lazy and try not to tire our brains. I don’t think you need that much of a practise. You just need to think, read guides and advices and constantly revaluate your game. Since, I have very limited time, I always think, search, study, and constantly revaluate what I do, to whatever I do (even games, I don’t play anymore though). It works. I get pretty good very fast and with insanely little time spent. If you want to become pro, you must spend more time though.

I've seen youtube videos of people who played and beat Metal Gear Solid 3 on European Extreme difficulty without taking any damage (not getting hit ocne), never missing a single shot, no alerts, no cautions, all within less than 3 hours. I always thought that to be milimeters away from humanly impossible. But there are thousands of people who have done it. Do you think they can be considered "pro gamers"?

since you seem to be asking how to become a good competitive gamer rather than a "professional gamer" (one who can sustain a livable life on his gaming income) i have a few suggestions.

1. enjoy yourself, don't try to be someone who you are not. even if you are naturally an asshole, don't try to hide it. the more comfortable you are with yourself and your game the faster you will improve.

2. find either a good clan or good friends who you can play with without a hassle when you need to hop in and practice a bit

3. find a mentor. this is a must. i don't mean a "pro" gamer or anything like that, just anyone who is much better than you that can coach your gameplay. someone who can kick your ass over and over again and force you to apply new strats to progress.

i started quake 3 in late 2004, got into OSP around 2005 and i advanced to being a competitive gamer very quick based on the tips that i gave you there. i had my ass handed to me a ton when i was first starting out and i have to honestly say that i attribute losing to good players/teams as being my biggest skill booster.

instead of spending time playing the game, try practicing instead, it's not the same
you say you play since 97, so you probably have a lot of experience, but you're lacking on the rest of the elements of an FPS, such as aim, positioning, timing, creativity(really important and this is the one experience won't give you) and the ability to adapt ur playstyle according to your oponnent's playstyle....
and yes, anyone can become a programer, but most people don't try hard enough to practice the correct thing, for example, one might say he has practiced after playing nothing but ztn for 2 weeks, but the results he gets from that practice could have been more easily achieved if he recorded himself playing ztn vs 3/4 players of different style and then checked the demos to see what he has done, and what he should've done in several occasions, vs each of those playstyles...

about quakelive, i'd say at least 25 guys can travel around the world to attend lans with everything paid by sponsors
besides, you make your own chances, if one wants to go pro, he has to put effort into his practice, he can't just sit around expecting to be one the 'lucky' bastards that gets picked to be sponsored

Even 'professional gamers' who have made it (South Korean StarCraft pros) don't last very long, and very few make the real top. It's not worth your time.

But anyway, for what it's worth, I definitely think there is a 'natural' component to gaming. I've had friends that absolutely sucked at games and friends who were able to pick them up faster. I myself quickly took to FPS games as a kid and have played at top levels on a number of FPS games since Quake, so perhaps it's just a matter of how young you are when you start/first get into it, similar to learning instruments and languages.

Another possibility is it's just a level of competitiveness which leads to a different style of thinking/practicing while playing.

In all seriousness you really only need one skill/ability to be better than everyone in any game/sport. You need to be able to see your mistakes and then not do them again.

Many of the quake pros out there don't even have the best aim, they just play smarter and don't do stupid shit.
