I'm a huge fan of DT, got all of their albums, and albums of their side projects :P (e.g Transatlantic, Liquid Tension Experiment). They kick-ass live, mainly because they have one of the best guitarist in the world, John Petrucci, and imo the best drummer out there, Mr. Portnoy.
But yeah, their vocalist, LaBrie, isn't perfect. In some song he's great, and in some he's not. Nonetheless, live he sings really really good.
Nice to see fellow DT fans on ESR tbh. I think James fits them perfectly because he he's technically very good (rythms etc). Its hard to find a vocalist that can sing Dream Theater well because of that reason.
Have seen them the last two times they have been to sweden. The first one was great, and the second one was even better than the first one :D.
What the hell, Walter likes Dream Theater? I may have to rethink my dislike for you into something less hateful :D.
Jokes aside, very nice to see dream theater fans on ESR. Seen their "An evening with Dream Theater" show, and that last time they were here in sweden they played with Sympony X =).
They liveshows are very very impressive. Not just for the ears, but for the eyes as well with the lightning and tv screens =).
heres some bands/cd recommendations you should check out that i consider better than what dream theater has done. it is just a shame none of this is nearly as well known
angra (check out temple of shadows), anubis gate (new cd), ayreon (older stuff), pagan's mind (first cds), shadow gallery (any) theres more but I don't feel like listing a ton of bands. these are just a few i thought of off the top of my head. if anyone can't find some of this stuff or are just lazy or want any more recommendations i can send you some music..just contact me my info is in my profile
this doesn't include progressive death or progressive black metal either, which also have some amazing bands..most unknown. for instance check out this progressive black band http://www.myspace.com/neobliviscaris
alot of people are confused and think dream theater actually started the whole prog metal style..its far from true. check out fates warning or watchtower to see how it was done before dream theater was around. not taking away from dream theater as some of their cds are good (images & words and awake for example) and i still listen to them every now and then. they are also talented musicians but still WAY WAY overated and nowhere near the "best band ever" which is a phrase i heard so much at the concert it started to bug me
So turn off the vocals? Plenty of proggies/plugins that do that.
Besides, I dont know why you'd want to turn off the vocals when Labrie rocks so hard :)
Friend of mine once said it's possible to a point where you have to know it's lacking a voice to really notice a few minor flaws. However, the automatic software only works sometimes. So it does take quite some work.
He owns / works at a recording studio so he should know what he's talking about.
OPETH fucken rocked. Saw them last night, June 1st, in Clearwater, FL. They played one of the new songs off Watershed, "Heir Apparent", which is even more heavy than the album version would lead you to believe. The set started with Demons of the Fall, then they played Baying of the Hounds, Wreath, In My Time of Need (Damnation acoustic song), Heir Apparent, and then they closed with The Drapery Falls. Dunno if that's exact set, but those are the songs I remember.
Between the Buried and Me were okay. Maybe I need to listen to their studio recordings to get the subtlety to the music, but it didn't seem much of anything besides odd ambient moments in the middle of the typical hardcore/metalcore breakdowns. I did get to see the lead singer naked in a speedo (a story for another time and place).
I only saw the last song of the opening act, Three, but they were good and energetic.
The real disappointment of the night was Dream Theater. Granted I'm not a fan of their music, but I always hear how great they are and how technical they are and I was EXCITED to see what they're like. But, from my experience watching their first four songs of their set (before I walked out), was that they are so in love with this noodling technicality that they don't bother playing anything that has a purpose. The mood/tempo/cadence to every song is the same. I couldn't tell when one of John Petrucci's solos stopped and another began (yes, the guy plays multiple solos in a single song). It's really sad because solos have a purpose besides just existing -- but I guess he's giving the fans exactly what they want... to admire him for his technicality. I think my friend, who is also a great guitarist, said it best, "Dream Theater is just noodling. Technically great musicians, but they have no taste."
I honestly felt like I was listening to hyper-technical elevator music listening to Dream Theater play. And beyond that, their theatrics are not be believed. When their keyboardist pulled out a keyboard guitar and stood center stage noodling all over his "keytar", the laughter in the audience was almost louder than his keytar work. It's sad to see a band so technical but so without comprehension of how fucken theatrically laughable they are...
BTBAM is a band you need to be familiar with their music to get into it, because it is rather complex and different. They aren't as core as you seem to believe though.
When Opeth were in Richmond they fucking owned when they played Heir Apparent...was my second fav song of the night. Loved it.
Im seeing opeth in December - same show that wch is seeing.
Wish the Prog Nation tour came to Australia... BTBAM, Three and Opeth are fucken choice bands... not so much a fan of Dream Theater due to the singing however the Train of Thought album is pretty decent..
