I think you need to consider that the majority of real game music is before CD music was a reality.
It was much more charming then as the hardware dictated what was and was not possible.

It took real innovation then, nowadays there are no limits and it's too easy to get lazy. In the older days you had so few channels you really had to focus on a good melody and that's why so many old tunes are memorable (yes i know it was simpler to remember too) over todays.
That's not to say there is no good music, but I would say towards the end of the last century something was lost.

I actually think composers had more freedom in the projects before when the games didn't really have same kind of atmosphere and theme to look for as nowadays. If gaming studios only manufacture generic medieval rts/rpg or realistic shooters composers are forced to implement some crappy flutes or heroic ambient bs to them instead of being able to write a kickass score they like.

GTA and GTA2 and 3 are way up there. The Homeworld soundtrack is fantastic, the second one is pretty good as well. Quake III Arena is awsome, the previous ones are cool as well! Half-Life 2 is one of the best though, together with the GTA ones. Also, Need for Speed Carbon has some really good stuff in it, but also some bad. Doom is also good. Be sure to check out The Dark Side of Phobo! It should be available on that site as both MP3 and FLAC.

Oh, that's very cool :D I remember having a demo of the first Wipeout for PC back in the early 1990's. ˇ Street Fighter II: catchiest tunes in a game ever.

Then there's, above the rest, Zelda, but I haven't mentioned it because of my new all time favourite: Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It has all the classic themes from their past hits, most of them orchestrated (and I mean with a real orchestra) and merged into one disc of pure Nintendo masturbation (plus Sonic and Metal Gear Solid).t
