I'm tired of hearing interviews about why deathmatch died. It seems that that is all people are willing to do - speculate how their games are dieing. Yet, you never see a top player(interviewee) taking a leadership position to support and to promote the necessity of making the best out of every possibility we get to keep deathmatch alive. People listen to top guns. Respect them or not, they are being heard. I wish they would quit whining about things that are dieing and try building them for once. If you have a good reason not to say like court proceedings then fair enough, but to say its no ones business really is a kick in the face as your voice could have influenced a lot of people who might have otherwise NOT signed up the CPL after new york.

If anything you've just proved my point, the increased speed of F1 actually makes it safer, because there are so many conditons that go with it and its the same with CPM, while it's faster, the imapact of that is that it takes away some of the core things that you really need to be conscious of to avoid getting fragged.

The thing the same principle applies foir any competition. If you make a mistake it's up to your opponent's skill to capitalize on it. Nothing else matters!

Doesn't matter if you lose 250 or 100 hp because of a same mistake, it always puts you at a disadvantage which the other player can capitalize on. If he is unable to do so that is his own mistake.

If you don't agree with this assessment instantly just try not to thing about it in a single situation but in general. Where if you do something perfectly you win and it's all about forcing others to make mistakes and profiting from them!
(This obviously excludes some sports, that are based on physical attributes!)

And I'm pretty sure that goes for racing as well-

Prediction and positioning are the most sought after skills in duels because it allows you stay one step ahead of your opponent, if you have inferior aim, it will still be more effective than your opponent if you have better prediction/positioning.

In a game like CPM, less emphasis is put on prediction/positioning because battles are usually frantic all over the place when you catch site of each other (its more like how you play ffa), whereas in Vq3 the pace of the game usually means you still need to stay really focused and precise about where you do battle. REally little things make a big dif, in CPM, its so fast less emphasis is on that which is why its arguably more fun to play and spec by many cos not every game feels like a CPL final.

Sadly, when it comes to play vq3 type speed games you'll find you're lacking the core aspect thats gonna get you ahead.

That's why I think the game is less skilled.

Since cpm is faster it's simply a lot harder to avoid mistakes but by no means less important.
As you put it, the fights are all over the place and more frequent but in every single fight the prediction and positioning also makes a big difference.
Therefore the positioning in one single fight isn't as important as in vq3 since there more, but if you keep making mistakes in prediction and positioning you will lose just as badly as if you had made one big mistake in vq3.
So, yeah in vq3 one mistake can loose you the game, but in cpm you have more chances to force your opponent to make mistakes.


Personally I never could decide if either can be seen as more skillful. cause imo making a great play and forcing the opponent to loose can be just as skillfull as waiting for his mistake and using that to win.


an example:
During school I played both normal and Chinese Chess competitively. In normal chess the very basic strategy is to make your opponent make a mistake and in the process lose one single pawn and you win the game, so it's quite defensively played.
On the other hand in Chinese chess making a move to take certain pawns is considered bad cause they are sometimes not worth a single move. It's more about positioning and making a difficult combination to gain an advantage, it is played way more aggressively.

Which is more skillfull? I couldn't say. But I only kept competing in Chinese Chess caused I enjoyed it more.

You can do prediction and positioning in CPM too... And it can be just as important.

VQ3 is ONLY about positioning, because without that, it's as random as CS. You have to rely more on broad macro strategies, because the only way to play is by firing around corners. Weapon balance would be exponentially better if the targets you were aiming at weren't moving 5mph. Even if you were to lower the damage across the board, you'd just end up with Warsow - +back games that are nothing but item hunts because you can't kill anyone. CPM puts emphasis on fighting the player instead of the map.

No. I'm proof that it isn't. I probably was lucky though, but I can name many players that disagree with that statement. It is however a hard task for anyone that is just starting to play video games. I am not really into the other game scenes, I have no clue how many other tournaments there are in other games. But even in Quake 3 it can be beneficial to play. What definitely helps is to have a great sponsor supporting your career.

voo at the moment it is, just sit down and think back to 2005, you had skills, had the drive and passion and got lucky at the same time being pushed by your talent. For the majority of people and i mean 99.9% of them it is, and it probably will be for you from now on. Unless you can truely prove us all wrong and manage to catch up with the oldschools, i hope you do but i bet you dont. Theres a reason youve been inactive for the last 2 and a half years and you said the answers yourself, because Q4 didnt seem your thing etc yeah because it wasnt! I believe that the path that Av3k and Cooller chose is most optimal approach to so called "progaming". They never gave up their education and nearly flawlessly combined real life with strong training regime. They are living proofs that progaming is, in fact, a pipe dream, and in reality gaming is nothing more than hobby, which can be profitable along the way.

Forever, on the contrary, left school even before becoming succesful. He took a risk and it obviously didn't pay off. Some would say that majority of footballers did the same and never really achieved any success. That's right, but even being a 3rd class footballer you can make your living entirely out of fotball. When it comes to gaming, you can win some (relatively huge) money, but it's very, very unlikely.

Best time for gaming is when you're a teenager, 14-year old or something like that. You have loads of spare time and no real duties, you can train like a madman. Also kids somehow happen to learn games much faster. It is a perfect situation: you didn't really sacrifice anything besides your free time and you gain much real-life experience and huge money of course.

I believe that gaming should never become pro. It is best when it is a hobby and natural talent wins, not "who practice more". Moreover, casual gamers don't care about progaming. Only hardcore gamers and progamer wannabies care about it actually. Most of my real life friends play/played counter strike. They have no idea what PGS or fnatic is. Not even mentioning shitloads of lan quake or starcraft noobs I met ;) Once in dormitory I accidentally found out that some guys there play quake2. Dm1, newest patch etc. I joined server and of course owned them and they were like "WTF man, did you spend your whole life playing this game?". I met with strong disapproval and got kicked out, they didn't want to get better. They didn't want to compete. They wanted to just play game their enjoyed...

I completely agree on the "optimal approach" to progaming theory.

I find it amusing that people choose their way as a "progamer" without having any major accomplishments on their account. Even in starcraft best players were arleady top10 world(outside korea) before turning pro. If you can't do shit as an amateur you won't do any damage as pr0 either. People like starcraft idra or quake forever actually believe that leaving school and playing 10h/day is a guarantee of success, its not.

As for quake it's really interesting that people think that being pro is a must. Czm didnt have to leave school to become one of best players ever. Why should you become pro when you can be best player and live normal life? And if you can't do it you just suck, so won't do anything either way.
