Besides in the JGTC, not really. =P

I don't recall it doing well JGTC before being replaced.(granted those cars have little to do with the production cars).
But for what it is worth, the ae86 was very successful in GroupA Div1 racing where it pretty much dominated from beginning to end. It even holds a world record for Spa Francorchamps, for I believe 23 wins out of 23 starts.. Or something to that extent. The car is there and is the first thing you see when you walk in to the francorchamps F1 museum.
AND the car is still competitive in it's class and very popular for rally events do to it's weight, handling and durability as well as availability of race developed bits'n'peices.

My mistake, I didn't mean the JGTC, I meant the D1GP. It's a good car overall, but it's not nearly as good as it's hyped to be.

It looks like it might just be a port of Arcade Stage 4, which I hear many bad things about. You'd do better with GT5, for sure.

If I want a real driving experience i go drive a real car.

IMO the whole point of simulating something is that you gain the sensation of something in real life you seldom if ever do.

As someone who got banned for passing an M3 at 158 MPH and getting banned and almost throw in prison I can tell you NO DRIVING simulation comes close to driving a turbo charged car running a 1.8 bar of boost at 150+.

that's probably why I prefer arcade racing type games.

The original Ridge Racer and Daytona USA are gaming perfection IMO.

Only the beginner track was an oval, the rest of the game was sideways action.

Rideracer also had so much emphasis on cornering you could invoke announcer rewards for taking them at a certain speed.

Racing Simulation cost, 50bucks for a game, 250 for steering wheel and either 300for a console(lol..) or how ever much for a computer.
Now compare that to the cost of actually doing some wheel to wheel racing. Hell if you want to 'race' other then at the drag strip you are looking at a minimum of at LEAST 10grand in cash, vehicle/kart+safety equipment+pre-track maintenance(oil/fluids, pads, perhaps tires+any thing that may need to be fixxed) and track fee's and don't forget you need a tow vehicle and trailer.. Then you are stuck with maybe one event a week if you are lucky.
Of course there is solo2 and 1 and DE events. autocross remains cheap but you are not racing against anyone directly, merely dodging cones in a field, and solo1 being time trial events at tracks, hillclimb. all in all more costly and DE events aren't races but are still a lot of fun. Again all of which is a weekly/biweekly/monthly thing.
And no I don't consider being an assclown on a public road 'racing'.
Racing simulations arent an alternative of racing to those that have the means to get into real racing. The costs to play a sim(live for speed, GTR/2, RBurns Rallye, ect) game is next to nothing and you can have fun with them any time you have some free time and thus it is hardly stepping on the toes of actually participating in any sort of motorsports.
I believe that with your point of you are missing what it is that many people love about racing which also translates to sim racing as well. Sure, the excitement and feeling of speed isn't present in a video game and yes it is an obvious joyfull part of actually racing or I guess being a speeding tard down the highway.. But the enjoyment of feeling out and pushing.. or I should say persuading your vehicle around corners at the tires absolute limit is the thrill. The challenge and reward of doing so, and in wheel racing there is whole tactical and even strategic mindset going on when trying to get round or block your opponents. That is not found on being a speeding tard on a public road.

Racing games should be about nudging/crashing, warpneck speed, crazy power slides, more often than not the realism of GT will make that impossible.

To make it worse, the video proves that the simulation is bullshit, so the whole selling point is a hoax and is only appealing for ignorant.

umm.. GRAN TURISMO SERIES IS NOT A REAL DRIVING SIMULATION!!!
It may not be straight up arcade ala needforspeed, but it is not a genuine simulation game. How do I put it in terms ESR people will understand. GT series is to simulations as Halo is to FPS deathmatch. I think that about covers it.
Look up the other games I listed, note you wont see gran torismo or forza or project gotham racing, colin mcrea's dirt or whatever it is the console kiddies are claiming is uber real these days.
I live in the US so I'm unfamiliar with this formula ford sampler day program. In fact I haven't even seen anything mentioned about it being open for the general public(ie people who have no prior racing experience).. And of course the absence of information does prove anything, I would find it highly unlikely they would let in any random shmuck in one of those cars and let them loose on a full fledged road course, esp for 50 pounds. But to give you the benefit of the doubt as I do only have limited information on the program, it is still a special yearly/or whatever it is event and although it sounds like it would be a blast to do, it is NOT racing of any kind, be it directly against opponents or against the a clock. You aren't paying to 'work the car' over.
And I repeat, racing simulations are not an alternative to actively pursuing a hobby in motorsports any more then masturbation is to getting laid...for normal people.

Actually, GT4 in GT mode is pretty close to real.

It comes close in the sense that it gives you a vague idea of what it's like driving but all in all the vehicles reaction to various inputs still very preprogrammed and unintuitive in the game, lacking in subtlety and communication(which in of itself is hard to translate into any video game). I've wondered if somehow this was do to the limitations of the systems the games were designed to run on but from what I have read GT5/p feels very 'been there done that'. To give them credit though, considering the amount of content on the games it would be nearly impossible for them to nail down many of the specific details when it comes to each vehicle and each track and how they compare to the real life counterparts.. but that still doesn't explain why even if I pretend the vehicle I'm piloting is make believe and the track is what is in the game(ala LFS).. that it all still feels disconnected and unimmersive to me.

That said your argument towards him isn't with out it's merits. But the thing to learn from it is, using Top Gear(or fith gear, or best motoring) results as source for information to be taken seriously is asinine at best. Top Gear often puts satire before FAQ in many of their skits. Although it is very entertaining, everything on it should be take with a grain of salt.

They spent tons of time working on the accuracy, including mapping out the tracks with entire teams on-site and by hand, with thousands of photos and measurements. Each car was individually tested and re-tested. While arcade mode offers newb physics, and cars do default to having assists on in GT mode, the sim is still there.

Racing games should be about nudging/crashing, warpneck speed, crazy power slides, more often than not the realism of GT will make that impossible.

You should probably learn how to coax the car into doing amazing things instead of just assuming it's impossible because you're a bad driver. Learn to manage your tires, to shift your weight (to do those "power slides"), and to feather your breaks.

I have 100% game completion on GT4, which includes the Nürburgring 24 hour challenge in REAL TIME. If you bothered to watch the details, you'd know that he's playing ARCADE mode - not Gran Turismo mode. Arcade mode offers arcade-style physics (read: less real for newbs) and all cars to pick from! Gran Turismo mode offers an entire car buying and racing campaign, with very in-depth tweaking, and near real physics. He wasn't even playing the sim part of the game! Worse yet, he used the CONTROLLER to play, which makes accurate countersteering impossible. His clumsy oversteering in a midship car and clear cuts off the course were amateur, at best.

Obviously there is nothing wrong with that if you aren't looking for all it is sim games are designed for.(but being a speeding tard or doing a parade lap is still not 'racing' ;) ) It is funny because when I play typical arcade games I get frustrated. Everything feels either overly dumbed down that I don't feel like I'm actually doing anything, or they just feel illogical and.. drunk. Last arcade game I reasonably enjoyed was needforspeed:underground2 which, for a celebrated and proud to be arcade game did a commendable job on the driving physics and interactions most of the events.
And of course super mario kart still fucking rocks.

According to Polyphony and Sony, they had real racers attempt laps on the tracks several times, and had them go up against those times with a wheel and the racing physics, and the average difference was 2%. I'm trying to track down the contact info for the guy who made that piece so he can correct his mistakes. He wasn't even using the analog stick to play. =P

Well, GT4 has 700 cars, which isn't something you can just go and get in real life, unless you're loaded and have a huge garage. The anime "Initial D" is all about pushing street-level cars in ways that most people wouldn't even know about. Sims like this allow you to take advantage of some of the crazy shit that real cars CAN do, but is scary as hell to do in real life.

So sic, does it follow a story line? And will it be in english? (probably not :(
