i played it a lot when i started to play games online and i went to a couple of LANs with my friends to play in tourneys.
gotta say it's pretty funny in a competition. i lost my interest completely due to the fact that it's zero fun online for me and i don't go to LANs anymore.

and you sucked at it, but thats in your dna. when it comes to quake 3, i dont think a german got what it takes to be any good.

1. They haven't played any other game and think it's almost one of a kind.
2. It's easy and they're too shit to play a proper game.

Now has a DeathMatch mode
Ton of custom maps
Got updated all the time. You still see small updates from time to time.
Etc.

That's a convenient explanation, but wrong, of course. Being newbie friendly (whatever that means) is important in a sense of a negative requirement. Meaning a game that is not newbie friendly will have a hard time, but being newbie friendly in itself doesn't provide an answer to why people keep playing it once they're more experienced.

Hell, cs is a game that's, what, 8 years old by now, on an engine at least 1 1/2 generations older than Q3, and so far I can't see a dip in player numbers, and that's despite source and whatnot.

It's fun when you can play with friends, but still Quake games >>> * (maybe I'll change my mind when SC2 and D3 comes out :P)
