True. Also theres some interesting techniques being used on lcd tech to reduce blurriness. such as backlights that flickers at 60hz. I reckon within 12 months LCD tech should be useable on quake

All of that guide is based on objective testing and the best "hardcore gaming" monitors will all be fine for Quake.

there is no good tft for quake, it's more of a "less painful" hunt than a "good monitor" hunt. i myself use samsung t220 which is probably the best tft i've played with.

I see everything is widescreen nowadays. Doesn't Q3 gets stretched by the sides if set to fullscreen? (without the two black stripes). If so, playing with the two black stripes... isn't that annoying?

i play stretched.

in cpma you can set widescreen resolutions with r_mode -1 and then r_customwidth and customheight to whatever you want but i couldnt care less anymore, i only play for fun and i dont feel like it ruins it for me really.

nvidia drivers allow you to choose between:
strech picture over the whole monitor
strech but keep aspect ratio
1:1

Some monitors allow you to choose the first 2 points as well, I didnt see one yet that allows 1:1

game rendering on this is better than what i've seen on most 2ms TN panels tbh, and the colors and viewing angles cant be touched...usb hubs, TV tuner etc... really a top monitor if you ask anyone lucky enough to own one before NEC stopped manufacturing them (ips panel process too expensive)...

A friend of mine has this monitor and I can vouch for its goodness. Best LCD I've seen Q3 running on (that's about all we play). I've only really played on various Dell LCDs, but the 20wmgx2 beats their ass

dell is worst I've ever gamed on, LCD-wise. i've used about 7 different types of CRT, and 10 or more LCD's (I lan often)

Well, the main issue is the panel lottery you play when you buy Dell. Some are great, some aren't. They just happen to be really popular around here since we're a few miles from the Dell HQ. I've yet to do the WMGX2 side by side with a CRT (we have amassed a crapload), but it's going to be at Quakecon with us (along with my beloved Sony G420 :P)

I am coming from a 160hz NEC multisync FE992 19" CRT, with some very high end gaming hardware, so I can fully appreciate the performance you are looking for.

I honestly have 0 complaints about the Samsung 226bw LCD that I have. I play Warsow, Quakeworld, Painkiller, and CPM on there (high speed games) without any issue whatsoever.

I HAVE played on crappy LCD monitors that made me hate LCD and only want to use CRT from now on, but when you use that native resolution of 1680x1050 the response time has ghosting non-existent.
If you use something OTHER THAN 1680x1050 on this monitor, then it's performance will drop to that of any other old crappy LCD monitor. It is very important that you have hardware that will support the games you're playing at that resolution.
Concerning the stretching, I have not had this issue. I had autoexec.cfg's for every game that does not natively support 16:10 aspect ratio.
If you do decide to get the Samsung 226bw and have issues with any game that you wish to play on it you can contact me here (I'm a regular) and I assure you I can get it working beyond your expectations.
The main reason I switched from my CRT is because I needed it for my other build, and also because I attend many LAN parties with buddies of mine. It's a pain (really, in the lower back), to carry a 60lb CRT everywhere you go.
I WILL be bringing both my CRT and my LCD to Quakecon this year, and if you're coming I'll give you a side by side comparison to show you just how good that Samsung really is.

I also come from a 120hz at r_mode 4 CRT so yeah, I will notice if it sucks or not. I would go for the 226bw but again, what makes me stop is the random panels. I've heard the bad ones are really bad, and obviously I want the best panel if im paying for it.

About the 1680x1050 for no ghosting etc: That shouldn't be a problem with Q3, but I doubt I (and noone) can run nowadays games at such resolutions (specially a game like Crysis). Sure you don't need 0 ghosting to play a non competitive game like that, but yeah it kind of sucks. I hope the image quality is at least decent at 1024 and will try to cope with the LCDs ghosting.

I also want it to make it easier when I move to LAN. I would like to go to QCon but I doubt thats possible atm.

I play Crysis at 1680x1050 and it's quite playable. All settings very high. No anti-aliasing
The reason it works so well is the fact that Crysis is the first game to get Motion Blur done correctly. Cinema films typically play at 30fps, but the motion blur gives it a very natural flow, so that it doesn't look like a slideshow at all, but a smooth moving picture. I average around 20fps with all settings very high in Crysis. I've set it all graphics to low to see how the game plays that way, and honestly it runs like poo at 60fps. It looks like the game is being fastforwarded. Watching the enemies patrolling looked like they'd all chugged a gallon of coffee apiece.
It was made to run at around 30fps to play correctly.

edit: if you don't have the processing power to pull off 1680x1050 then go for the 19" version.

It's playable for single player because the AI even on Delta has slow reactions. Probably deliberately to make up for the lag from the motion blurring and how everyone and his cousin use LCDs.

In multiplayer Crytek was smart enough to have that shit turn off by default. Yes Crysis was the first game to ever get motion blur done correctly where it actually felt smoother and looked better with it on than off. However for online or against a challenging AI you'd never want it as it's 100% hindrance. If 25fps in crysis with motion blur feels as smooth as 50 without, it's still better for you online to settle with 30-35 without it as motion blur only reduces the perception of stuttering but not the delay and other disadvantages from slow framerates..

I would never take Crysis MP seriously.

No offense, but it's simply not that type of game. It's not really interesting without the story/graphics.
The movement is not skill based, so I could never take it seriously. Just like i don't take CS:S or COD4 seriously.

I don't play it or know how to do anything near this, but there definately is some skill based movement in Crysis. Many of these sorts of jumps could be clutch in a team power struggle match and give you a big advantage.

If you've played Crysis you'll know what you saw was not the suit modes intended function. :) I accidentally did some jumps like this during the single player campaign and thought it was pretty fucking cool. Pretty cool glitches.

The fact the weapons do not have remotely as much random spread as CS and the speed of the running speed, let alone when in speed mode, would make some CoD4 players nauseous, should give it a little bit more credibility.

It's an alot faster and more interesting than other large scale team based shooters but that is saying extremely little. But it does take more skill to play than the above two games. Crytek doesn't dumb down their shooters, they just haven't been good enough or popular yet in MP for that to really matter. Maybe by time their third or forth game comes out they'll have something very respectable. But honestly though I'd rather play Warsow 2.

It's hard, I tried to do the high climbing jump for like 5 minutes and then gave up to go eat.

The only thing I can do is what they're calling a 'circle jump' which is basically speed moding yourself at a blunt surface of the right angle to fly airborn like a light vehicle hitting a jump then controlling it like you would a CPM jump in mid air. :D SO actually it's air strafing.

what settings/resolution should i use with a widescreen lcd monitor to get closest to a crt ... ?

native aspect ratio. I think it's r_aspectratio "2" in Q3, but it might be r_aspectratio "3", since one is going to be 16:9 * (hdtv) but most monitors are 16:10, such as 1440x900, 1680x1050, 1920x1200.

If you run it in the correct aspect ratio then it doesn't stretch the image, it displays it normally, but you have a wider peripheral vision.
