Here are a selection of short video interviews from some of this years Quake III ESWC participants. Featuring...
(fooKi, CZM, Av3k, Zero4, Jibo, vo0, Matrox, Chance, Rapha)
I translated the interview to english. My english skills are not what they should be, so certain nuancies in what they said might be lost or distorted.
Interviewer: I'm sitting here with fox who unfortunately lost the final of quake3. I guess the mandatory question would be "how does it feel?".
Fox: Well eh, it's never fun to be so close and let it slip through your fingers, but it still feels like a comfirmation that I'm in good shape, with San Jose coming up. This was really a... It's a big event but it was actually a qualifying tournament.
Interviewer: So you are happy with your own performance, despite the loss in the final?
Fox: Yeah I felt, I came to this tournament after being ill for a couple of days, and my self-confidence disapeared completely during those days so it felt quite rotten in the start. So I'm really happy to finish second despite that.
Interviewer: After the match you were interviewed by the french commentators who claimed Cypher had litterally owned you big time, but you didn't quite agree. Could you tell us why?
Fox: It's like any sport. When you're behind you have to do something to catch up. In football you might substitute a defender and try to play more offensive, and you may instead let some more goals in. So... I thought it was an even fight and when I had to really go for it in the end it didn't work and he coud rack up the frags. Hehe.
Interviewer: Do yo consider Cypher your toughest opponent in this event or had you expected another opponent for the final beforehand?
Fox: Nah, I felt that he was clearly in the best shape, and that kid is an incredibly talented player. I definately had him as the favorite to win.
Interviewer: What do you think of your chances in San Jose, you are qualified to that event both through this event and the swedish?
Fox: Well, it feels pretty good. Next time I will be 100%. I'm happy with my shape and it will only improve.
Interviewer: Is the dream final a rematch between you and Cypher?
Fox: Yeah, that would feel really good. It might happen.
Interviewer: What do you think about the extremely hyped American players, Zero4, CZM, Rapha and chance?
Fox: Well, as usual it's the americans who hype the americans, and those knowledgeble knew that they are a few steps behind right now. Three out of top four in this tournament were estern europe players, and they are really hot right now. So the americans have a long way to go.
Interviewer: What do you think about the swedish quake scene? We had three players attending, we should have had four but Prozac didn't get hos trip payed.
Fox: I think the the skill level at the swedish qualifier was really high. Sweden is definately still competitive. I was a pity Prozac couldn't come. The biggest reason I looked forward to this event was that both Fazz and Prozac would come here. They are old friends so this was gonna be like a reunion, and then none of them attend. So that was a bit dull.
Interviewer: (Looks at camera man) What? Heh. Ok. The battery in the camera is almost empty so we have to round things up. Thank you Fox and good luck in San Jose!
Fox: Thank you.
OMG carmac, your GF is so cute. !!! \o/ youuuhouuuuu yeeeepaaaaa !! :o) (EDIT : I changed a word, cause it seems that it said the opposite of what I tried to said. Merci Kraal :o)
That's a nice pic, the colors/lightening are really cool. Who took that?
I got home from Paris late last night (delayed flight) and I will start editing movies this week. I've got a lot of interviews and footage and I will let you know here on ESR when I have some videos up. :)
You know what... (hope I will correctly explain the story)
I didn't remember that you and fox are together (more than just friends I mean...). In fact I never read sweedish tabloids :)))
So when @ the ESWC I saw you looking Fox with love eyes and Fox looking you with love eyes too, I asked my friends : "are they together" ?
So my friends started to look at your direction, and at this moment you kissed Fox... and my friends to say : "Of course they are together !!! nooob !" haha :o)
how much sweedish tabloid can pay for a photo like that ???
I thought he was doing a good job but then every interview was kinda awkwardly just finished. You should have asked 5 quick fire questions for 60 second interviews.
I do appreciate it though, great to hear a few words from the pros. Thanks!
It was funny when he kept asking Vo0 about his earnings from CPL , "... so you have a lot of money right now ??!!" .. "Yes hahaa"
He's planning to rob you Vo0 :O
He basically said that he didn't expect to play so well at Masters and he thinks that his best form is yet to come - before GameGune. However he isn't really satisfied yet, as he still doesn't play his "A" game, but he feels his shape getting better and better.
About Z4 game: he expected to win hub and then the other map (meaning 2:0), but he played really shitty, didn't hit anything and didn't control the map at all. But that kind of matches happens when you're not in your best and stable form. However he didn't really get angry after that game, and he tried to play his game on the other maps and it worked out pretty well.
Rest is just talking about the moment when he really got noticed and stepped on another level of performing. And according to him that happened at QuakeCon (2006 I guess).
Oh, and he played Q4 mostly for money, he was really glad if there weren't any tourneys around and he didn't need to practice. The game style suited him more though as it was really fast. But overall he likes more Q3, he likes playing it, he can play it a lot more when practicing. Moreover, he says that in Q4 you could surprise your enemy on a few different ways, Q3 is already some sort of "burned-out" - everybody knows all maps from inside out, everybody knows how to position themselves, what to expect, how to play and it's atm basically aim-based. Who shoots better, who has better "routine" and mind-game, wins the game.
Yeah, he simply has to buy a 1k$ photoshop and artificially reproduce the part of the picture that is missing, instead of finding the original picture.
I must agree with some of you, the interviews was bad and short....he looks so stressed when he talks to them, like he wants to get the hell away from there as soon as possible, like :P
