it was the opposite - 60% racing and 40% shooting. stated by id guys numerous times

the trailer (although it's shot by cam again) looks fantastic imo. and i love the setting too. kinda feel at home :)

at least we know 60% of the game won't be dumbed down cause of joypad device compatibility, and will certainly be good

Why is this majored? Unless the game ends up getting rushed because EA hassles id into doing so, this will have no impact whatsoever on the game itself. Perhaps the admins are desperate for material since ESWC Masters, but regardless, all posting this has done has created more pointless whining.

Doom 3 was great and i think that on some occasions, even though it is lame to put graphics before gameplay, the "wow" factor and the atmosphere of a game can make up for its lack of originality or gameplay.

Quake 4 1.0 wasnt ID :) than when id patched Quake 4 it becomed a great game :)

I don't buy that. It has the id logo stamped on the box and I'm sure id controls many aspects of the game, as they have done with other outsourced games.

In the end, they are the owners of the IPs and the ones who choose to release the games and hurt their brand. Mike Morhaime usually talks about "brand withdrawals", and that's what id have done in the past by releasing games that, even if you consider them good, are objectively not great.

i've been working with activision for years, so dont tell me how good they are. these days EA is forced to try new things and seems very caring. love their new approach with games.

I very much doubt this will affect how id opperate, they've been in control of their own destiny for years now. The only change this will have is likely to be an increase in marketing, either the amount of it or its reach, I can't see how that is a bad thing for a competition scene

no, I think so too. EA is good at promoting their titles on a huge scale. And id want their game to be promoted well, so it was a wise decision, imo.

id have enough muscle and experience in the industry to allow them to not get walked over by anyone, the deals they have with publishers are mainly along the marketing and distribution line and nothing more. Time spent on development and design will be totally down to id's choosing.

I mean all their gamers revolve around shooting monsters. Sure Rage will be shooting monsters in uberdetail but its still shooting monsters.

The monsters in this vid could have easily been part of Doom 3 or Quake 4 :S

I am. Cars and racing are boring and they have never worked so far in any FPS I've tried except for being a nuisance. ID's singleplayer games after first two Dooms suck.

Quake1's theme and design is one of the best ever (clever blend of norse folklore, Lovecraft, occult elements). if the game would've had RPG elements as intended in the initial plans, maybe it would've been a lot more iconic in SP (as it is in MP).

personally I hate Quake 1's theme. Its one brown depressing pile of crap with kitchy doodoo

while the pallete used isn't so varied, brown is in equal amounts to grey, green, metallic blue, even azure on some maps. the settings are erroded military bases, castles, swamps, cemeteries etc., so it's only natural not having any vivid imagery apart from stained glass in some cathedral like places.

..and im not referring only to textures in my previous post, there are also items, monsters, world and ambient sounds, terminology that contribute to my feeling.

most prominent mappers work for Q3 and QW as well.
they just can't let go of the unique QW feeling. recently Lunaran ported cpm23 to QW and incredible singleplayer maps pop up constantly..

for me Q3 looks like the worst Quake...Doesnt have the complex moves of Q4 or Q2...

QW as is one feeling...and i like it :)

The only thing that i like in Q3 is CPM...but i think painkiller is superior to CPM in aerials fights :)

artists use black and white to to achieve certain goals, not to show off their skill as a photographer.

No artists ever does a certain piece because he has the skill to do it. It always starts out with an idea and a goal and then his or her skill determines whether that goal is reached.

nostalgia mkay, but comparing making maps for Q1 to mapping for Doom is blatantly ignorant since Q1 has almost the same BSP model and WAD format for textures as Half-Life (HL/CS maps can easily be run in Q1).

I agree with svr personally. Quake's atmosphere was just overly depressing and crude and with very dark colour pallette, as u mentioned.

I loved doom's variance and art. iirc Romero made the laboratory levels, which were sort of the kick ass riffs of the game, but when u went to hell and end-game it all just stepped up a notch like thrash-speed metal solo. There were some craziest shit on them you never knew what was around the next corner. I think those were by sandy petersen.

I liked the heavy metal backgrounds and the sort of 80's 'gore cartoon art' much more in general than quake's 'funeral/goth' thing.

I digged quake 2's SP, I felt like I had a proper reason to be there, not just kill people. Quake 3's was cool as well, with the challenge tiers and presentations etc, it was pretty exciting for me, trying to beat those bots.

Doom 3's was really cool for a about 2 hours, then got repetitive and dull, still, those first 2 hours were great though, so I'll give them some credit for that as well.

Rage looks awesome, can't wait to play it.

EA plays a hands off approach with wright's studio and basically lets him do his thing, given that carmack is probably more respected in the industry i can't see the big wigs treating carmack any different
