it's constant repetition. i wouldn't advice trying to force it. the feeling will come, with time.

i remember the first time i tried to play 1on1. by that time i had watched a shitload of demos already.

guess what my surprise was when i found myself always winding up beside the mega when it was due to spawn!:)

it was my subconscious navigating me around the map, based on all the information i gathered when watching all those demos. felt weird:)

and when i finally tried to concentate on timing, oops!, i lost the internal feeling and had to rely on the clock:)

practise practise practise. You'll get the feel after awhile, unfortunately feeling is useless, if you are one second off you won't get the armour/mega, if the other guy is using the clock. When I was playing a lot I was using feeling for about two items and then just timing the most important one by the clock. I'm apsolutely horrid at everything now so don't listen to me.

Play and time items on the second is a good thing to do. If you time two items and lose track of one of them, usually you can estimate when it will spawn based on when the other item spawns. Also if no one has been at one location for a while (for instance if there's a lengthy battle over one armor), items at that location will likely spawn very soon if they're not already there.

there's two 'feelings' perhaps, one is informed and the other is pattern based. it's definitely not something that's prophetic.

pattern based: you play enough duel to realise when the next item in the pattern is spawning, dm6 and ztn are probably the easiest for this.

informed: the times repeat after 3 minutes which give you a rough idea when something will spawn. e.g. mega, 35 110 145 220 255 330 - then it repeats, so 405 440 515 etc. obviously people won't take items instantly but when you know those set times you can add or subtract seconds.

hope it helps, the best way to practise this is just to time a lot.. like adding the times onto the clock and keep practising that, then both the informed and pattern techniques will slowly build. but i think it's kinda useless to try to actively think about patterns and when items should be spawning, just time normally. eventually you will just know.

Its all about experience I think, if you have played the map alot after a while you know at what position you are and how long it took you to get there. If you moved from an armour, been up to a certain point in the map, was in a small shootout you know if more or less time for that armour to respawn again. If you did not pick it up you can see that pattern your enemy is moving what items is not where it should be, or if other items start to reappear you can somewhat predict what time the armour was taken.
I think its more to do with your interactions on the map than 'counting in your head kind of approuch'.

You don't need to hide the timer or anything, but just do it and improve on it. I mean, if you're late for an item, remember how long it felt like, and next time don't wait so long, same as if you go back to early. Its not really a calculated thing, its just like, a pressure - "I'm sure RA will be coming up in a sec, I better go there". So its just practice really, trial and error. Its easier than you think to be fairly accurate. The most important thing is not to get too bogged down by other things so you forget you need 5 seconds to get to RA (or whatever), from wherever you are. Its not THAT hard to know what 25 or 20 seconds feels like. The more you do it though the better you get.

Just play a lot and if it will come naturally. Of course you could specifically practice it but the idea is to get item feeling in your regular play (so you realize armors are coming up while in a gunfight).

Its mostly conditioning of the mind, imo attainable by either timing it by clock for some time or just continously trying to guess it by yourself (the clockless method you mentioned). Either way should work given you keep playing.

Another thing: You will usually get a much better feeling for armors then say, megahealth. Just because you will be tracking multiple amounts of em instead of the mega.

playing tdm also helps if you have teammates that call available items or announce quad will spawn. It all adds to the same conditioning pool.

One last requirement is that you need to keep your mind focused on the goal of map/item control, in that way the conditioning can kick in and you will get the feeling ra/mh will spawn. If you lack this concentration because some sort of distraction you will not trigger the feeling. Things like nervousness, too much focus on aggresive play (usually a ctfer/tdmer will have this problem initially), or just anything else distracting you.

I didn't know that when posts go to other topics u still get replied :) Anyway thanks for the replies, I'll try to do some timing against bots (they're not as disturbing as players are, but still help to get that duel feeling).

With time comes experience! Though hiding the clock might work out great.

I bet that it might be different for someone else but to me, depending on the gameplay speed (cpm, vq3, q4, etc...) after playing a good amount of games you get to understand the time factor associated to the different actions you make since you took an armor for example. What i mean is that lets say you took a RA, after playing alot you will know when its about to spawn depending on what you did since you took it couple of secs ago.

I believe various techniques can be used to time items but the "feeling" like you said is what will make you control a map more effectively. I can sometimes "feel" the timing of 3 items that i have control of. Calculating times would only mix me up.

well when you travel in certain paths you get to know how much time it takes to travel from A to B and it helps timing too, then its just math =D and timing 3 items

Use the clock... wont harm you. IMO the best way to time is to time the MH to the second, after a few games you'll notice that 90% of the time it spawns at: the same times: 0.40, 1.15,1.50,2.25,3.00 and then it starts over again (look at seconds) so rather than having to remember 'the mh is spawning at 2.30' just remember 'the MH is 5 seconds late'. Then beyond that just alternate which armour you go to pick up, and youll get a feel for the timings.
