I also had a brief time where me and a few other osp'ers tried ra3pickup and all the ra3ers hated us because we were not "camping at the place you are supposed to camp".

ya it's quite bs. They expect you to play only a certain way and only use certain parts of the maps or else it's a kickfest. God forbid someone uses strategy and doesn't rush to get ambushed by 4v1's

The idea is to not confuse RA3 for FFA. You see, there's a "blue team" and a "red team". You're not supposed to stand somewhere rail in hand and only mind your own personal score - which frankly, nobody but you gives a shit about - but rather to try and be useful to the team - which doesn't necessarily mean mindless rushing.
There's another point too - it's not necessarily your team's fault if you get raped. There is more than just two possibilities (jumping alone in the middle of 4 enemies OR beeing on the other side of the map).
Of course you got to learn to read your HUD, check where your mates and enemies are, place yourself somewhere to be useful immediately after the bell rings, but not get raped. Takes time and a bit of knowledge.
And even if I say so, probably takes some close combat skills few OSP players have bar 1on1 players, especially when it comes to RL. :)

But yea, if you're continuously the last man standing, and most of the time full on life, that probably means you're beeing of little use to your team, and your teammates will probably not like getting raped while you stand where there's no enemy to fight.

That's kindof the point in "regrouping" somewhere - around upper courtyard on map11 for instance.

That also saves us from endless hit'n'runs at the end of rounds, which fail nine times out of ten anyway and are a bore to spectate.
Fleeing and hitting rails vs public servers newbies - that might have been impressive and all the first time back in 1999, but it gets a tad bit old.

Well, I don't know of any team game where you're not expected to play a certain way ? People will whine at you if you don't keep your defensive or offensive role in a CTF game, if you don't go to PU's - same goes for TDM games if you continuously eat all possible items without letting anything to your mates or don't go to Quad, etc.
I can't see what's wrong with that - it's a TEAM game, if you wanna play your own way without having to care about others, stick to 1on1.

absolutely not, i've depleted all the fun out of ra3.. nudging down the occasional teammate into the void at map11 is great.. spawning, going to the usual spot and shaft 50% until you either win or lose just isn't fun.. all that while the mod itself is just plain bad

the dislike is based on the retarded gameplay where the easy things are rewarded.. and with that, the community's inability to improve their gameplay.. if cpma with cpm gameplay (aircontrol and fast weaponswitches, you know?) were the standard these days, i would actually play it.. with it, there would be lots of room for improvement on the personal skill level and less focus on aiming..

I don't know why you are even trying to disprove that ra3 rewards camp. I don't have the urge to state what's obvious for anyone not narrow-minded, why there is no incentive whatsoever in ra3 for leaving a spot where you are safe and so on...

It is a freaking FACT that many official clan and nation games have lasted HOURS.

Edit : and btw, I've been watching 1on1 for a long time, which is supposedly the cream of the crop of Quake 3, and up to 2002/2003, it was all about freaking CS on t4, t2 and ztn and 1-0 scorelines in overtime.

RA3 was a terrible mod at the time (you stopped at 1.5 iirc right ?), indeed.
It's still not the best of the best but it's got all the basic features nowadays - including improved netcode and fixed physics.

Then again, what you're displaying is swedish RA3 the way it was played in 100/100 - ie, none of the teams moving their arses, and both complaining about the other team camping.

Ever since we've switched to 200/100 to make railgun a little less overpowered - as opposed to in any other vQ3 mod - I've never played any map that lasted more than 25 minutes, and that's when we played all 21 rounds.

I've enjoyed a vast majority of the RA3 games I've played ever since, and I can't even play OSP anymore - shit netcode, all about hitscan and standing still, almost no close combat and a practically useless rocket launcher.
Last time I played CTF it reminded me the last time I tried CS 6 years ago - wondering how I could ever have played that and call it "Quake", or even enjoy it the least bit.

But yea indeed, we happened to watch a few old 100/100 demos with lofwyr, and were like "did it really play like that ?". It was indeed pathetic, especially in competitive games. :)

it was a terrible mod for competition then, and it's a terrible mod for competition now.. i've played the most recent version quite alot and i have rarely actually had fun doing so.. the most fun you can have with ra3 is being a cunt to people, by having the goal of being as annoying as possible..

"improved netcode" sure, but its still a fucking joke, even compared to cpma vq3 with xerp.. and i'm pretty sure i've experienced bug-slides and weird bounces with those physics..

the gameplay is ra3's biggest flaw.. the player is required to know how to get to a predetermined location and once he's there use the lightninggun until a) his team has won or b) the other team has won.. nothing else is required if this is done every round :p

I don't know really, most scandi clans played in the SRA3L and few of them played CB so indeed, we might have a bad idea of what scandi RA3 really was at the time. :)
Then again, "one of the most agressive play" at the time could still have been damn slow to me. :P

i have played a lot of ra3 and i did quite like it back in the day because it's mindless aiming, no real tactics beside "meet at xyz", requires no real movement skills and you're newbie-friendly rewarded for airrockets and stuff.
beside, especially the majority of german and dutch players, being totally brain-amputated and unable to stop insulting everyone else for even 1 minute is the way "cws" are played the worst thing about it. i recently gave ra3 another shot because i was bored and we took a whole hour for 1 (!) map.. in trains we played like 4 or 5 maps in that time... it's just no fun to play this crap competitively.

Ra3 is mindless, yes. I think its a gateway altough to quake in general. My early days begun with Ra3 and I've been to some lans and played it "competetive". And as you guys said it gets boring. The only thing you can improve is the aim and you never get any "aha" feeling.

But I had my fun share with Ra3 and I wish the community best luck!
