im sorry but i agree with him, not in the fall sense of bankruptcy because they are very profitable. But the fact that they will never development a success esport game platform anytime in the near future, and i dont think any other game developer will either. The reasons being that I just personally think our expectations on what is actually an esport game has gone well beyond what developers these days can reach and cope with.
By "everyone," I mean everyone who has tested the game so far. There have been several public showings of the game where many starcraft players have been able to test and give feedback, and professional players from Korea have been there as well. There are minor complaints over MBS and the unit selection cap increase, but Blizzard says they plan to offer new ways to macro in order to make up for these changes.
There are some FPVODs from these events, if you want to see how the game looks up to this point.
I don't think there will be many games dedicated as an eSport because the area is not profitable yet.
When the scene takes off, we may well see it then but until then we are more likely to see games that appeal to casual gamers that happen to be picked up by tournaments
I don't have time to really fully comment on this but basically: you cannot expect any game developers to spend time developing a competition mode for their titles - the market is not there yet.
John Romero, replying to my email about competition features in games
Hopefully QL will give them some room to explore ideas that can fund competition features like a premium service where you pay monthly. Once you have credit card info matched to player identity faking becomes a little harder (and if the config changes were recorded much harder because very few good players now can play with someone elses config effectively and no one would believe someone medicore suddenly got good mid-competition by changing settings) and bans much more effective.
wtf? this is basically what i was saying
game making must not be about business. you've got to do it with passion, or you will not make a good game. when you've got a job to do, and a timeline when you're supposed to be finished, you will not make something creative. when you lay rules on genius, genius will be no more
