It may seem odd, but I actually don't know exactly where yet. It all depends on where gf ends up with work (I work from home so it doesn't matter to me), but for sure it will be south (Kempton/Augsburg/Munich). QSC look pretty good so far... thanks for replies :-)

They finally activated fastpath.. after like 18 months (multiple e-mails and calls).

My connection also isn't the most stable one, i had to buy another modem (the versatel modem wasn't compatible with ther own DSLAMs ..) and tweak it to not get resyncs ever 10-15mins..

We use qsc for 4 years now and are happy with them.

The offer 16/1 flatrate including telephone flat for 32, or 35 if you don't have a modem etc.

The sometimes make mistakes but are very good at dealing with one. e.g they send our modem to the wrong adress, so they send it again with express shipping and it arrived the following morning.


Also: very much avoid Arcor!!!!

qsc (dsl) or ish/unitymedia (cable) are good. everything else depends on location. oh and caps are rarely seen do not get one with a cap.

unity is freakin insane in some regions... I'm pinging 5-20ms all over europe on a friends connection.

i can confirm that. i ping max. 50 all over europe incl. UK and 5-10 in ger. fkn owns.

kabel bw/unitymedia/kabel deutschland are very good for cable. also i think that down there in the south optic fibre is pretty widespread.

OK, so I'm now in Germany - the Frankfurt area, not in the south as I expected, but hey ho...

I have looked into QSC, but have a few issues:

- they do not offer a static IP address on the 'home' services and I need one
- it will take 4 to 5 WEEKS for installation - this is just too long....

Does anyone have any advice on any other good/stable/fast ISP (cabel is not available where I am)? Any advice most appreciated!

why do u need a static ip adress? use dyndns or whatever

Sorry that I don't have any recommendations, but static IP is a bit of a problem since most providers in Germany use dynamic IPs for "private" accounts. Those are always almost part of the "business" packages which are then more expensive.

that's why DSL sucks and cable owns. :)

I need a static IP for access to some services that only allow specific IPs, dyndns is only for name resolution.

Bloody German ISPs I would say... getting a fixed IP in the UK is no problem - trying to find a quality provider (that doesnt need 5 weeks to install...) is proving rather difficult!

cable provides static ips (well kinda atleast) dsl does not. if you're unable to get cable you're out of luck. 5 weeks to install is not a lot around here and has it's roots in the german telekom monopoly on dsl...

After some more investigation it seems I can get one with DSL. I have to get a 'naked' DSL gateway installed from Telekom and then I can get a provider that will offer a fixed IP, examples are:

yeah, that's a business line though. how much you paying for that (if you don't mind me asking)?

I dont have it yet - but the costs would be 24.99 a month for the Internet-Zugang (6000) from Telekom and then up to 9.99 a month for the provider, depending on who you go with. Thats all without phone though.. thats extra.

I have got another solution though - a cheap home package including phone, then a shell account in the UK for a couple of quid, then an SSH tunnel to that for services that need a fixed IP - and thats it, done. Cheaper and more flexible :-)

OK, last question hopefully. The area I am going to gets kabel later this year, so I want a short-term DSL contract. I have found one with congstar and they seem to be OK - good telephone response and no minumum contract - does anyone know if they are really any good?

so it shouldn't be too bad
although i don't know anyone there
got adsl2+ (16MBit/800kBit) from arcor myself - don't need a static IP although they HAD a proxy you could use until a couple of weeks ago which (obviously) had a static ip
prolly not your thing since - afaik - they have a minimum contract time of 24 months
pings are excellent (i get <10ms everywhere in germany and the netherlands and normally under 20 to the UK)
