The 6th edition of the ESWC. In order to attend to the final in California, all champions will have to qualify through ESWC national selections from January to June 2008.
We (european people and our politics) are really dumb to say nothing about that... Because if the anti missile is based in europe, that means that a potential nuclear missile which will be launched against US, will fall down in european ground instead of US one... :-(
I don't care about (some of) US people when it's because their politics that other people want to destroy them, It's not my fault or my problem, and I don't want to receive a nuclear missile on my head because US anti missile are based in europe...
But missiles don't get shot down and explode when they hit the ground. More than likely the only thing that hits the ground will be fragments of missile components, maybe some rocket fuel, maybe some bits of uranium or plutonium or deuterium, but nothing that couldn't be easily cleaned up by hazmat crew. Uranium/Plutonium in casings hitting the ground may cause a little radioactive leakage, but that sure beats the crap out of having a 2 megaton warhead hit your hometown and vaporizing all your countrymen.
This is good thing for Europe, especially those in NATO. It's a missile shield against any non-NATO. It's a symbol US is using to get more European countries to join NATO. And Russia is using it as a symbol of continuing arms-race.
IMO, It's probably a good decision for Poland and Czech Republic.
See, this is as far as an American's critical thinking takes them when it comes to foreign policy. He just concluded everything is right with the world.
WRONG, MORON.
Czech Republic and Poland have now become TARGETS for nuclear attacks launched from Russia. If there is a war, the first thing Russia will do is drop nukes on those radar and missile installations, quite a few of them. Poland just made itself the front line.
Maybe you should use your superior European critical thinking skills to remember that this is a topic about somebody who cannot attend a video game competition and not a war debate.
I suppose it would make sense for Russia to waste nuclear missiles by sending them to attack an anti-missile station... if they were complete retards.
Also, the missile shields and radar towers in Poland and Czech are hardly the only ones around. Those merely extend the coverage of those already installed in long-standing NATO member countries. The only thing tactical that Russia is left with is air-strikes and ground forces, which obviously will be combated with other air and ground forces by NATO troops.
I'm sure you thought that if a war did break out between Russia and USA that Russia would simply leave alone Czech/Poland because they don't have missile shields. This isn't a world we live in which World Wars or Nuclear Wars is only fought between two nations. If nuclear ICBMs start flying everywhere, you can be pretty sure that EVERY CIVILIZED COUNTRY ON EARTH is going to get wrapped up in it in some fashion, whether that be politically, economically, or militarily. They will, at some point, have to pick sides.
If you had been following the events as they unfolded and the responses between Russia and NATO members, you'd see the pundits all point to this only as inducing more of an arms-race between Russia and NATO. Not making Poland/Czech less safe, when in fact a missile shield makes them more safe. It's as simple as that.
Now if you want to get into who is right and wrong, that's all subjective and I'm not saying US or Russia is right/wrong. I'm just saying what it is...
And btw, fuck you for insinuating just because I'm American I can't think critically about the way the world works. Which is IRONIC cause you're from the bay area in California, USA.... zZzZz, I love how hypocritical people are on this website.
"I suppose it would make sense for Russia to waste nuclear missiles by sending them to attack an anti-missile station... if they were complete retards."
ya, it makes much more sense to not use them at all or let them be shot down...
In any case I think I read somewhere that Russia has many more missiles than that shield could shoot down, so it's really not efficient against them, and as you also pointed out yourself, Russia's nukes wouldn't cross Europe in any case.
"the only thing that hits the ground will be ..//.. some rocket fuel, maybe some bits of uranium or plutonium or deuterium,"
So if it's (ROFL) ONLY some uranium and so on, keep it on your ground and destroy Iranian missiles on the US sky instead of EU sky.
"It's a missile shield against any non-NATO. It's a symbol US is using to get more European countries to join NATO."
ROFL. Do you really think that Poland is the best place to protect EU against potential Iranian missiles ? In fact the only thing why US asked to install this system in Poland, is ONLY to protect US from middle-east country missile, which could pass via the north pole... US don't care about EU and more over don't care about Poland. If it was to protect EU, the anti missile system should be better installed in Romania (south east of EU) instead of Poland which is on the north east of EU.
And please, stop your mentality @ "dark side of the force" against the "Mary Poppins World of NATO".
You should perhaps better try to understand why some people wanna destroy US, instead of make war, build fences, and close your eyes and doors on the other culture.
EDIT : And if you not thought about Iranian missiles but CCCP@Russia ones, do you really think that Russia want to launch a nuclear missile against EU ? No, another time, the only mission of this anti missile system is to protect US and not EU.
First off, Iran doesn't even have ICBMs capable of hitting US soil. Second off, any Russian ICBMs bound for US would probably take the shortest, fastest route which would be straight over the Arctic circle.
Okay, I guess you'd rather have a 2 megaton explosion hit your hometown rather than some chunks of radioactive material contaminate a small area for a short while before hazmat crews get out there.
ROFL? What's ROFL is that you think the USA doesn't care about anyone but USA. You realize that our economy have very, very big trade deficit, i.e., imports > exports? Our economy is based on trade with our countries, including every country in the EU and all across the world. You have to realize that what affects one of us, affects us all. For example, look at how the housing crisis in the US has affected the US and vice-versa.
Your mentality would make sense in world that isn't as globalized as our world is today. We are all playing poker at the same table. What affects one of us, affects us all. You need to realize that you can't just turn your back on world events and everyone around you and think you can succeed in the world. Moreover, I don't see where you think you rank among all the member nations of NATO, but it obvious that you think you know what is better for the Czech and Polish people than they do themselves...
"Okay, I guess you'd rather have a 2 megaton explosion hit your hometown"
From who ? And why somebody wanna attack my country ?
The best way to receive nothing is to not follow your (US) way of think. Is to not attack a country without reason (irak) and so on.
"We are all playing poker at the same table." => but without the same rules... Or with YOUR rules (that we do not accept), and we don't have the choice :/
This is true, yes. I've heard about that. But they still don't have ICBMs. I suppose once they start sending Jihadists up into space, the world will be a better place?
sooo US can install rocket defense in Poland, but one quake 3 champion cannot come to US for 4 days? I see how it is....
way to go Poland, select your allies wiser next time
Well, even if it's America they usually have some reason. Like "Oh, you're going there to win prizes? Is that part of your income? Oh, then you need a WORK PERMIT. You need written confirmation from the company hosting the event that you will attend, and it will take X number of months to get the VISA" (strictly hypothetical case of course)
"For Av3k this decision is an extra blow since he was determined to prolongue his title, and become the third player in history to do so after French Quake and UT champion Winz and French Gran Turismo player Snake."
Basically consular officer is not obliged to explain why a person was rejected visa, especially if we are talking about US visa.
In 2003 or 2004 Cooller was having problems with american visa. He told me, that a consular officer in visa section of US Embassy in Moscow had told him after the interview: "I don't see any point in your presence in the United States". That's all, no further explanation. Luckyly, in the end of ends, Cooller finally managed to get the visa that very time, thanks to some good personal connections. Actually any consular officer of any country has the right to reject in issuing you a visa, and he is not supposed to give any explanation.
What I am saying is that it's not normal to have this. Those officers SHOULD be giving relevant arguments for not letting a guy enter the country. Or something is fucked up.
Well its ofcourse sad that a competitor isnt going, but saying that they dindt have a chance for top3 before is jsut truly ignorant.
czm and zero4 is some of the most winning players ever, if they bother to get in shape topspot would really get a run for it..
why were you right? Who said you were wrong? You failed to mention that everyone else would have the same chance of getting a top spot that avek wasn't there. Instead you just mentioned one country. hmmm!?!??!
Because, since age, there always exists a "competition" between the old continent players (and "flame" from their fanboys) and those from US :p Nothing bad, nothing anti-American.
About the : "everyone else would have the same chance of getting a top spot", you are wrong.
The fact that av3k was not here, do not change the fact that the "weakest "players (low seeded) still the weakest ones, and even without av3k they have no chance to reach the top3.
But 4th, 5th, or 6th of the high seeded players have a "free" spot, and better chance to be 3rd (when cypher, jibo and av3k were the expected top3... in disorder).
However, Rapha impressed me a lot and he deserved his 3rd place, and even, he deserved to play Cypher in final instead of semi.
I'm looking forward the next lan with such talented players from all countries and especially from USA (it's exciting to have a lot of fights like that).
no it isn't. it might seem like you're just having fun on the internet, but thinking like this is what people do everyday. This ends up in hate and wars. Why keep spreading it? OMG AMERICANS NOOBS OR EURO PUBES?! YA IT'S SP FunnY!! HAHAHAAHHAAHAHHAHAHAHA?
It ends up being real and people die because of the differences. Oh but you don't want to be conscious of that fact do you? I'm just going to sit here and believe you've never been in a war with friends and buddies getting shot around. Or else maybe you too would have a different opinion on this and others. People, friends, family, little kids dieing for no reason. I been there man, and it's because of people on the internet not thinking their little jokes don't matter. When in fact it does, it really does.
I'll just hope you don't have your friends, family or yourself be shot at just because you are from another country, town, culture.
You are so LOL. I speak about video games, fanboys (not fanatics hooligans and so on...). And you spoke about wars, died people and so on... :/
Since 40 years, the United states of America is the only country which is involved in every wars around the world... So please keep you're argument for you and don't come to say to French people that wars is not good. It's not the fault of France if more than 3000 US soldiers are died in Irak (and I'm really sad for their family).
You come here to tell me the moral and the way to think (just because I said thanks to the forfeit of Av3k US players have more chance to be in the top3). And after you speak about wars... But your country is the 1st seller of weapons, and makes wars everywhere over the world :x and I don't find the relationship of your argument with the fact that US players had more chance to be in the top3.
You speak about culture, but you invades the world with your Judeo-Christian culture and way of life... And if the world is like that (wars and so on), naturally it's not your fault, but the other fault (me, in the present case)... :/
As I said "wait and see", but I was right to said that american players have more chance to finish in the last top3 since av3k and also nike can't come.
SEMI-FINAL 1
srs`Cypher -vs- SK-rapha
SEMI-FINAL 2
k1llsen -vs- RazerJ
There is only 1 american in the top4 (with av3k and nike, it should even been 0 american player in the top5)
Afaik there are two types of visa, for immigrants and non-immigrants. The former is a complex thing involving immigration whatever. The latter (used for tourism, medical treatments, short terms studies jobs,...) requires you to show proofs you will not stay in US forever. In the case of a 4 days stay, the plane ticket should be good enough. Are you saying that the problem here is that avek comes from Poland? It sprays nonsense everywhere…
afaik, that short term visa in combination with a plane ticket only works for selected countries.
And even then if you repeatedly enter the country then can ask for more reasons.
That was the way it worked several years ago and now with the homeland security and TSA I doubt it's becoming any easier.
this sucks :(
Can't anybody do smth about this? I remember that one time when a clan or tournament organisation spoke to the embassy guys so they gave the player a visa even though they denied it before.
I think it was either avek or cypher.
This happens too much when something is in USA - THIS is something that G7 / ESFI / whatever union that says it wants to sort gaming issues should actually look at!
That, or stop holding things in the US til they play nice with competitors...
What a shame. You americans are really living the american dream.. because your so far away from reality.. that's a wise sentence. Maybe it was ALI N.A.B. with is ultra sneaky terrorist connections.
And av3k.. don't get too frustrated kid.. you allways have GTV!
Sucks av3k but it happens. About 2 years ago I finally got a full-time job in the US and had a company hire an attorney to get me over there, sadly it could not happen because I did not have a uni degree, desipite exceeding other factors like earnings and awards. And I was a white brit so has nothig to where you from.
Sadly we live in a time when you're not treated as an individual, more of a statistic. Also many factors come into play like the time of year, and their quota limits. Of course it sucks as you only wnat to go for a few days to play a game.
Your only real chance would have been going to the American Embassy in Warsaw and obtain an interview there, they could have fast tracked it then, but yeah it stinks.
Stuff like this really makes you question the perception of "freedom", but don't listen to idiots implying its to do with where you're from. They just do things like this, and it's also happened to other players from other countries.
I think he meant it in the sense that if you are qualified, you have a chance. If you are not, you will land on the street or find yourself in a just as poor situation as before...
Dude, we all know you're trolling me on ESR. you only need to check your post count to see your disgruntled about something which was probably true.
What I actually said was...
"It's not fine for the majority of people who come here."
And you processed it, and added a bit of elevation to lauch your negative opinion of me as..
"no, he meant that only skilled people should let in at all, completely ignoring that there are indeed qualified who are unemployed."
I really don't think a German, who's family tried to invade my country and was responsible for the death of some of my ancestors in a bid to launch their Eugenist (look it up) views on the rest of Europe is in a postion to mis-represent a british person on immigration.
Please go away, or if you're going to attack, me at least come at me with something solid or you'll just keep coming off as second best as you have done here and get more and worked.
lat but not least most British people are against mainstream immigration, its a fact :). Sorry.
interesting deduction, but I can assure you I'm not disgruntled, just bored at work or while studying ;)
also I see this as a way to keep my English in shape.
and seeing you normal reception on this site, it seems I'm not the only one who often disagree with you.
I actually don't think my family was busy invading England cause my grand grand father died in Russia and my mother's side was busy fleeing from what is now Poland.
then again, I do come from lower-saxony ;) maybe not the invasion you had in mind but so what.
honestly, I find it quite surprising how easily you make a step from accusing my family and by extension me of being Eugenist to accusing me of being to liberal with immigrants from foreign countries.
What's next, am I also a communist with too many capitalistic influences? :P
But, really in the end I just find it very very deserved that you of all people actually had to struggle with immigration laws :D
What would be even more hilarious is if Wales were to become completely independent and the English officials would send you back there :P
Except those are the jobs most people on benefits/unemployed (British people) refuse to take, they would rather stay unemployed and living off of benefits.
Well hes right but as we actually have no say in the UK regarding immigration as i believe thats all controlled by EU or sommit now? it hardly matters.
There is a diff between granting a visa for someone to attend an event/convention in a country, and the UK where you can just get given a house/benefits/car/mobile phone whilst there are actually UK born people filling the shop doorways at night.
Should just host all of these big events in the UK, we dont turn anyone away tbh.
I doubt it given I was reserved for the o-1 visa which is only reserved for people with extraordinary ability.
I guess I was not extraordinary enough!
Trust me buddy, I done enough to make me immune from jealous put downs from losers on th net. Especialyl on a game forum/
I see past your little ip's and know deep down you're in a bad place and the only way to make yourself feel better is to knock others at every opportunity.
I wish i could say things will get better for you, but they probably won't :)
do you have a template saved for that?
no need to defend yourself. i just said that you're an asshole, not a dumb asshole. no personal attack right there.
well, i could say that you're dumb, because you're a racist but then again that's not the topic.
P.S.: Why be so insecure about yourself, mate? Not having a uni-degree doesn't make you a bad person at all. :'(

You have 3000+ posts on esr and you don't think you're have much expereience in forums?
Come on you're just trying to distance yourself from the site and come across as a casual user in the hope your opinion carries more mainstream clout.
I'm gonna give you a 9/10 for that because you called me "amusing" and "The best" and you know I did like that casual user thing you had going there gave you more credibility to the mis-informed. Plus you still got the opsHON! of denial.
well, i meant on forums in general. this is the first one i'm actually "contributing" myself.
so, no. i'm not trying to pretend that i'm the casual user. i am just a nerd like you.

Freedom? That's just a word.
You are free to choose.. if you wanna live in a democratic or whatever society with strict rules. If not you can allways pack your bags and become an hermit or create a community outside the typical society. But wherever you live.. as all human beings you live by the rules.. or the ones that the society implies to you, the ones from your neighbourn or your owns.
Some of us simply live in an illusion or don't seem worthy of the hability of being mentally capables.
Anyway.. if they are reporting that he won't go .. sadly it means that they have tried everything they could to get his VISA.
But has i said .. av3k.. get two packs of beer some cigs.. and enjoy the games!
Why does everyone always use this as an excuse to whine about hosting competitions in the US, or the Americans themselves? I mean, every country has VISA issues, some countries are stricter than others so you've to take that into account by preparing further in advance.
There are two Polish Counter Strike teams and another Polish Quake player attending, so I'm quite surprised that literally no one is 'blaming' av3k to be honest.
nah Visa stuff is generally pretty retarded. ESWC 2006 in France... our CS team couldn't play because 4 out of 5 guys were refused a visa to travel. it couldn't have been because of lack of travel history because the one guy who did get it hadn't gone anywhere earlier either. they all applied at the same time too. the one guy had a nice Parisian holiday at ESWC's expenses.
What about Cypher trying to go to Spain for GameGune???... I suppose that was because of US, somehow... =\
The simply issue here is that Av3k waited wayyyy too long to apply for Visa. Matr0x got Visa to US, so obviously it's got nothing to do with Poland and US relations.
because the mentioned "several" attempts andit's not like serious gaming didn't get him a visa before.
My guess is actually that the denied it exactly because he was there before and propably can't name any American relatives either. just speculation tho.
I honestly don't know how it works, but if another Polish player got a Visa, it makes me think that it has nothing to do with US or Poland. It has something to do either with the Av3k or when he applied.
I doubt Matr0x has any relatives in San Jose. Why Av3k can't get a Visa to just travel into the US is beyond me.
You could say, "several attempts" if he applied last week, and got declined (probably cause it was too short notice) and then applied again two days ago and the Embassy or whatever says, "It's wayyy too late to get a Visa at this point." My guess is that's what happened...
If Av3k or Serious-Gaming said that he had applied 3 months ago and it didn't work out, and made six attempts after that, I wouldn't have anything to say on the topic other than, "wtf". But because they say, ambiguously, "several attempts", who knows and therefore I point out Matr0x as having gotten a Visa so who really knows for sure?
Well you can make an educated by the way the Serious Gaming manager replied, I think his reply suggests av3k was partly to blame. My guess is he left it too late.
That's simply not true. The Schengen Agreement does allow some 'unrestricted travel', but there are a number of countries who only use part of the agreement. I know the UK and Ireland are two countries and you've a lot of Eastern and even central European countries who're neither part of the treaty or EU.
The irony is, if we held competitions in Europe, like people are suggesting; Russians, other Europeans and anyone Asian would still need to obtain a visa...
Why does everybody assume that it's not avek's fault that he doesn't have a visa? Especially because the post mentions "several attempts"... to me it sounds like he submitted several visa applications with different reasons why he wants to go there which obviously looks like someone trying to sneak into the country.
Although its kinda weird that Poland isn't included in the visa waiver program seeing how their government has been kissing America's ass for many years... maybe they should ask Slovenia how they got included 8=]
I assumed the Visa Waiver program allowed easier traveling for the countries which are part of it. This seems to be correct. However, Erk said this program is only for business visas. So to profit from this easier visa distribution, Av3k would need a business visa. This doesn't seem to be true as this program includes tourism visas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_waiver). And Poland isn't part of the program anyhow, so it doesn't matter...
Taking part in tournaments to try and win cash prizes is considered working/doing business for short periods. Even the swedes had to get visas to participate in tournaments, and afaik one of them was sent on a return flight when he didn't have a business visa.
Obviously you have no clue what you're talking about :)
1) visa waiver program = a number of countries which don't need to apply for a visa in advance but can get one at the airport (this includes business trips btw)
2) if you tell them that you're on a business trip going to a computer gaming tournament odds are good that you're not gonna get into the country since you have no employer/company/etc., even though for avek it may be business most people don't even know that you can make money this way.... so going for [x] pleasure and mentioning that you're a geek who wants to go this great computer exhibition as part of his holiday trip is a lot smarter ;)
"What affects one of us, affects us all."
obviously not the mentality of the US - US policy of aggression towards non compliant countries, and a nice history of supporting clear dictators (pinochet, hussein, the taliban, etc). the US is just looking to extend their influence so they can get more out of it and still keep their nukes in europe under the banner of nato against an enemy that no longer exists.
You're poker game analogy is fairly terrible, obviously there wouldn't be set rules, one table, blah blah blah i can't be bothered to state how horrible the analogy is.
You think the polish and czech people want a missile defense system in their back door? there was no referendum in either of those countries, so what makes you think they want it? all this deal does is shift them from being neutral to now being a possible russia, terrorists, or whoever. IT WILL NOT MAKE THEM MORE SAFE.
american nationalism is as bad as islamic fanaticism
"If this guy things that life is brutal because he can't go play a video game..."
If this guy thinks that life is brutal because he can't try and get 12 000 $ richer... Then it's quite understandable for me.
And what is the point in comparing his situation to people from poor areas of the world. If you are really that sympathetic go and do sth more about this than talk about this on the esports board.
