Those are fucking fantastic! I had one for years and ran it at 1600x1200 @ 85Hz (lower resolution and higher Hz for gaming of course). It had awsome image quality! Then I pushed it for too long and now it's useless :P :( But LCD is better for working things and movies, so it's ok.
If it's for hardcore gaming only maybe consider a CRT. If you plan on going to LANs, whether they're non-BYOC or BYOC I'd go for a good LCD. I'm not 100% sure which way quake tournaments are going atm, but the non-BYOCs I've seen/attended all had LCDs so you might as well get used to it.
They're far from as bad as some people make them to be, you do notice the difference ofcourse. Just make a list of things you do with your monitor, that's how I did it anyway.
+ non-BYOC events I plan(ned) to attend have them
+ I want more desk space
+ less of a hassle to take to BYOC LANs (+ more space there aswell)
You dont even notice the difference after a few hours of playing on an LCD, i had one for a while now and quake plays fine at high speed.
Maybe it would look dogshit if i saw it running next to my old crt diamondtron.....but i dont use that anymore so its not an issue. Looks smooth to the eye, plays fine, more aeshetically pleasing and in the long run all tournaments will use LCD. Get used to them.
