i'm surprise that some people on hardforum care about input lag. people from there like to use laser mice and some random mousepad called ratpad.

im using the avago9500 sensor (included in XAI, g500, g9x, mionix naos, Ozone smog) , and I have tried ultimat, roccat pads sota, taito, sense, SP, Qck +, qck heavy, destructor, sphex, goliathus speed, & control, SX, 9HD, s&s, allsop, puretrak, titan, qpad ct, func1030, icemat, ratpad, 5L, corepad, Xtrac, Xray thunder, Zowie.....

Guess what one of the best mats was ( best in terms of reading the surface with the avago 9500 sensor) :..................................................................................................................... the Ratpad, surprised? ( also 9hd , qpad EC-R / XT-r + ultimat turned out to track close to perfect)

Well, their replies are usually taken from sites like PRAD.de and Digitalversus.com which do extensive testing for input lag etc...

Yep, I've gone through most of the monitors in their product face-offs already and that's how I narrowed down those choices.

I'd consider these two only. take note of the specific model (not A and C in the samsung case and not the B2 with the iiyama).

I've been recommended the Samsung 226BW by some other people too but it'd be next to impossible to find out what panel I'd be getting with it (S/A/C).

I know it's tricky to find the specific panel you want, (as in you can't just ask), but I can attest to the S panel on the 226bw. I play CPM, Q4, Q3, Quakeworld, Warsow, etc.. painlessly on this thing. I also own a 160hz high grade CRT, so I do have a good basis of comparison.

If you had a high grade CRT you wouldn't ever be using your LCD.

A 24" 16:10 (computer format) widescreen will give you a little over 21" in 4:3 mode.

Actually you do since you skip the pixels to left and right, but have 1:1 pixel mapping (which is what native is all about). On a 1920x1200 monitor, 1600x1200 in 4:3 mode uses native res but blacks out the remaining 160 pixels on each side of the monitor instead of showing colors. Of course it requires that the monitor does aspect mapping, but most good monitors do.

If you have a decent scaler in your monitor you can scale quite a bit while maintaining a sharp image. My BenQ v2400w has no problems scaling 1024x768 (or 1280x800 in widescreen) and higher while maintaing a sharp image. At 800x600 it gets a little bit blurry and at 640x480 it is quite a bit blurry. Using the scaling on the graphics card (8800GTS 512) I need like 1024x768 to match what the built in scaler does with 640x480. Problem is when you have a cheap monitor with a bad scaler.

My TFT is sharper than my old CRT (8 year old monitor with a trinitron tube) when res is 1024x768 and higher, but native is 1920x1200.

For the intial poster I would recommend the benq G2400WD which is a cheaper version of mine. Skips the design stuff which most people don't care much about (I do which is why I got the V2400W), but is afaik just as good otherwise. Minimal ghosting without overdrive (barely noticable) and with overdrive it is pretty close to perfect (I don't notice any ghosting in quake games). Input lag is quite low as well. It is not as good as CRT, but no LCD running at 60hz/75hz will ever compare to 120hz CRT. It is however good enough that I put my CRT into retirement instead of having to have 2 monitors on the desk. Takes about a week to get used to LCD when going from CRT, but I wouldn't go back unless there was a major competition coming up. Picture quality is very sharp and in sRGB mode it displays very good and IMO accurate colors and the black level is much much better than I would have thought. Just make sure it is the G2400WD, not the G2400W which uses an older panel with worse black level and contrast.

That's because TFT's are only worth anything when used in their native resolution.

not the point AT ALL.. I was just ranting on widescreen vs 4:3 in general..

4:3 is often superior for gaming MP since you get more Y-axis info without having a very large screen+higher FOV though.

well, still not my point.. it's rather a discussion on human fov, than anything. You see, the whole Hollywood/business scene of things, think widescreen is they way ppl use their sight, and well yes you might say, we see more horizontally then vertically, BUT we can only focus on, like 40degrees at once, hence the non-wider aspect is superior for watching a screen :P

Which my 4:3 aspect for multiplayer gaming is a part of since you get more information a smaller screen than with widescreen. The human eye has quite a bit wider focal view horizontally though since both eyes are in the same plane.

I see that you've posted about BenQ X2000W.

I have the BenQ G2400W. No output lag, but is not as good as real gaming LCDs like the VX922.

Still, I'm pretty happy with it, it's great for consoles too and is pretty cheap.

Can you elaborate on why it isn't as good as the VX922? DigitalVersus.com says that the VX922 has an average delay of 2.2 while the BenQ G2400WD has 1.9...

Well, I can't really say what's the reason, but the VX922 never felt like all the other LCDs to me. I can definitely tell the G2400W is not as responsive, (probably because of the 60Hz, even if the 75 on the VX922 are not real) and even got me a bit seasick the first time I tried playing Quake with it. That said, I've tried a few 24" monitors since then and they all felt worse than the BenQ when playing.

There must be different versions. The older G2400W had an average of 5ms and if I remember correctly had lag between 0ms and 12ms according to http://www.digitalversus.com/duels.php?ty=6&a...&ph=12 a few months ago. It has been changed in the last few weeks now to 2-3ms, not sure why, The G2400W also afaik has a bit of ghosting which IMO is far worse than a little input lag since it makes the image blurry.

G2400WD should be pretty similar to v2400W which is a vastly superior monitor compared to G2400W.

Yes, it's the exact same panel but with overdrive (and the design is much nicer).

V2400W has a contrast ratio of above 900 from what I've seen measured in reviews (from around 900 to 970 depending on brightness), while the G2400W can't do more than around 700 with very high brightness. The main reason for this difference is the much deeper blacks available on V2400W. Worst case ghosting on V2400W (overdrive off) is comparable to best case on G2400W while worst case on G2400W is much much worse. The G2400WD which afaik was released late July/early August this year should have overdrive (I'll ask someone I know has one, but believe it does) and is most likely the same panel as in V2400W in a cheaper package.

Should be noted that I'm not 100% happy with the overdrive on V2400W. With it on I can't notice any ghosting compared to my CRT (with my eyes), but it feels like it adds a little bit of input lag. The ghosting without overdrive is only slightly noticable if I look for it, but it does not bother me in Quake games. Main reason I got the V2400W was cause of the quality of worst case ghosting and good color quality in sRGB mode while not having too much input lag.

I haven't noticed that much difference (friend of mine has it, although we only play consoles on his), but that's good to know since I was planning on giving my G2400W to my father and buying another one, which may now be the V2400W :P

Could you please ask your friend about the BenQ G400WD and reply back when you find out?
